A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCEIn the mid 19th Century, a groupof ceramists and entrepreneurs inWorcester, Massachusetts, USA, setout with a goal: meet the growing needof the burgeoning U.S. manufacturingindustry, which needed an everincreasing supply of grinding wheelsto build and maintain machinery.By 1876 Norton were manufacturing grindingwheels, and had acquired a patent for vitrifiedwheels. In 1885 the Norton Emery Wheel Co. wasfounded to manufacture the first grinding wheel thatcould be precision made and mass-produced.Through the latter part of the 19th CenturyNorton expanded its abrasives range and reachedcustomers throughout the U.S. and Canada. In 1909,Norton built its first European plant in Germany. This was followed by plants in France (1920),UK (1930), and Italy (1935). In the 1930’s Nortonstrengthened its position by expanding into CoatedAbrasives. In the same decade Norton developedDiamond and CBN based Super Abrasives.By 1950 Norton had established itself as the leadingworld-wide abrasives brand. In 1956, Nortonentered South America through an acquisition inBrazil, and followed this with plants in India (1968)and Japan (1972). This steady growth, based uponinnovation, technology and responsiveness tocustomers, has continued and Norton now hasa presence in 28 countries around the world. In 1990, Norton was acquired by Saint-Gobain,a world leader in the manufacture of engineeredmaterials. Saint-Gobain, founded in France in1665, shares Norton’s tradition of commitment toits business and customers, of understanding andresponding to the needs of the marketplace and oftechnical innovation. GENERAL INFORMATIONCOATED ABRASIVES Norton coated abrasives are manufactured in a wide variety of shapes and sizes in order to meet the needs ofprofessionals and individual users. They are used for sizing, sanding, stripping, polishing and finishing operations.Coated abrasives are made up of three components:ABRASIVESBACKINGSIZER COATBONDSMAKER COAT- The backing- The coatings- The abrasive grainsEach exist in a variety ofqualities. The best productdesign results of theoptimal combination ofthese three components.ABRASIVE GRAINSTwo main types of grain exist:Paper: Industrial abrasives: such as aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide, silicon carbide or ceramicabrasives SG and SG-X ceramic based abrasives.SELECTION GUIDE Aluminum oxide is generally used for the sandingof all sorts of timber (solid, laminate, ply,.) or withan anti-loading treatment, for sanding varnishes.Silicon carbide is recommended for sanding varnishand lacquers. Zirconium oxide and ceramic basedabrasives are used for sizing: high pressure andhigh stock removal. Natural abrasives: such as flint, garnet and emery.COATINGSThe coatings used to fix the abrasive grains on thebacking are applied in two layers, generally referred toas make coat and size coat. Norton uses different typesof coatings: Natural glues (animal or vegetable glues), Synthetic resins.Antistatic and No-fil (zinc stearate) treatments reduceloading during sanding or varnish sanding.BACKINGSNorton offers a wide range of coated abrasive backings:paper, cotton or polyester cloth and non-woven cloths. They provide flexibility and tear resistance, especiallywhen used on machines.16COATED ABRASIVESA Paper 70 g/m2Flexibleand lightFinishingfine sandingC Paper 110 g/m2Flexibleand strongSandingfine sandingD Paper 150 g/m2Flexibleand strongSandingE Paper 220 g/m2StrongF Paper 250 g/m2Very strongB Paper 90 g/m2Sandingand sizingTo improve both the quality of varnish sanding and ease of use,Norton recommends its Soft-Touch backing. See page 44.Cloth: Superflexible “J” cotton cloths are recommended forsanding profiles.Very strong “X”cotton cloths and polyester cloths areused for heavy sanding operations and sizing.Polyester cloths are water resistant. Non-Woven Cloth: Is tear and heat-resistant,used for hand sanding.

HOW ABRASIVE GRAINS AREDISTRIBUTEDSTORAGE CONDITIONSThere are two types of distribution: The so-called “OPK” openkote distribution, whichcorresponds to a coverage rate of 30% to 60% ofthe backing. This type of distribution thereforeleaves large spaces between each abrasive grain. It is recommended for all applications subject topremature loading of the abrasive product, whichwould inevitably affect both stock removal andproduct life. Furthermore, it enables faster stockremoval. The so-called “CLK” closekote distribution, whichcorresponds to a coverage rate of 100% of thebacking. This distribution mode is reserved forproducts that require a maximum number of cuttingedges per unit of surface area, thus ensuring abetter quality finish. It is recommended for operationswhere loading is less of an issue and whenever ahigh quality surface finish is required. To guarantee the performances of coated abrasives, certain storage conditions must be met: the premisesmust be closed, clean, and not subject to high variationsin temperature or relative humidity. Ideal storageconditions are:Temperature: 15 C to 22 CRH: 40% to 50%If the workshop atmosphere is very different to thatof the storage area, hang the belts near the machineon which they will be used for 1 to 2 days. For bestperformances, we recommend use within 12 to 18months following manufacture. Storage in an area thatis too dry or too humid may cause them to curl.Too DryToo HumidGRIT SCALEFEPAEuropeanCAMIAmericanSpecial grit yK625Very CoarseGrosMediumSilexA7266543210Fine2/03/0Very FineP240P280P320240280P360P400P500P6001K624 Crocus & /0P1500P2000COATED A
