Held on March 9th at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, the gala was attended by arecord number of over 260 guests. While the majority of attendees were students andtheir guests, the event also drew in alumni, faculty, and administrators. The evening started with a cocktail reception with music provided by the CharlesIngrassia string quartet. Then guests were welcomed into the ballroom for an elegantdinner. At each table, golden rose candles floated in glass bowls filled with reflectiveglass marbles and red rose petals were strewn around the table. Charlene Kiang, 2ndyear Honors College student, commented, The hotel was beautiful this year and theatmosphere was great. Following dinner, welcoming comments were made by Dean Madia, HCAB president Jeff Meier, and HCAB Vice-President and Ball Chair Jenna Kim. Then the partygot really swinging as the DJ provided dance music the rest of the night. Nirav Shah,1st year Honors College student said, The food was good, the music tasteful, and thedancing fun. All in all, it was a great night! A new event held during the ball this year was the silent auction. Donations fromlocal businesses, museums, and companies were auctioned off at fabulous prices tothe ball guests. Nearly 2,000 was raised by the silent auction. The Honors CollegeAdvisory Board will use a large portion of the profits to support their spring philanthropic project, which is to hold a book drive and purchase new books for UIC s ReachOut and Read program.Taking nearly a year of planning, the ballcould not have been the great success thatit was without the planning of the HonorsCollege Advisory Board and the HonorsCollege staff. Dr. Malchow, professor ofBiology and Ophthalmology commendedHCAB as he commented My wife and Ihad so much fun at the ball. Thanks fororganizing such a neat event. Also, theball owed much of its great success to thesupport of all of the local businesses and ofcourse, the guests. So mark March 8th,A group of Honors College studentsenjoying themselves at the Ball2003 on your calendar and join us at nextyear s ball!See more photos from the Ballon the Honors College web page:http://www.hc.uic.edu1April 2002

Rena Patel Wins Truman Scholarship; Displays Photo Exhibit in the Honors Collegeby Nafisa Patel Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile. Junior History major Rena Patelstrives to parallel her daily routine with this quote from Albert Einstein. Patel recentlyreceived the coveted Truman Scholarship. This prestigious nationally competitivescholarship, founded in memory of former president Harry S. Truman, is awardedannually to students based on academic excellence, leadership potential, and a strongcommitment to public service. It is obvious from Patel s leadership in campus activities that her award was welldeserved. Patel is currently the chair of Asian American Coalition Committee, whichworks to address issues concerning Asian-American students. Patel has also beenactive in Alternative Spring Break, and has volunteered her time at the Gads HillCommunity Center, tutoring math to grade school children.Beyond her work at UIC, Patel s commitment to public service also spans a globallevel. Last summer, Patel spent her time researching the role of non-governmentalorganizations (NOG s) in rural areas of Gujarat, India. While there, she studied andRena gives onlookers details about her photoexhibit on display in the Honors Collegeconducted research with three different NGO s. Along with her research, Patel photographed the area extensively. Her impressive black and white photos are currently ondisplay in the Honors College, and she was recently honored at a reception where she presented a detailed overview of her work inIndia and the people she encountered in her research.Patel has obviously contributed much to public service, and is committed to maintain this level of dedication. Her future plansafter graduation include taking a year off before starting medical school to study abroad, in addition to pursuing a joint MD/M PHdegree focusing on International Health Policy. Patel eventually wants to work for an international concern such as the WorldHealth Organization and concentrate on infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS.The Ampersand4April 2002

Sikh Awareness Dayby Natasha SinghWednesday, April 10th, 2002 marked the first ever Sikh Awareness Day at UIC,sponsored by the Sikh Students Association. The SSA is an organization that wasstarted this past fall for Sikh and non-Sikh students to learn more about and appreciate the teaching of the Sikh faith and way of life. From day one, the SSA was warmlyreceived by UIC students and it seemed that a void had been filled, particularly forSikh students.Sikhism is a progressive religion that was founded 500 years ago. Today, the Sikhreligion today has a following of over 20 million people worldwide and is ranked as theworld s 5th largest religion. Sikhism preaches a message of devotion and remembrance of God at all times, truthful living, equality of mankind, and denounces superstitions and blind rituals. Sikhism is open to all through the teachings of its ten gurusenshrined in the Sikh Holy Book and its living guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib. There are a significant number of Sikh students at UIC. However, the majority of theUIC community does not recognize the word Sikh or have any idea of Sikh valuesand practices. The purpose of Sikh Awareness Day was to cultivate a spirit of appreciation, understanding, and tolerance, as well as enrich religious and cultural education at UIC.Throughout the day, information was widely distributed within the CCC, and a boothwas set up with informative flyers and books. A 30-minute documentary, whichhighlighted basic Sikh beliefs, entitled Guru Granth Sahib, was played repeatedly inthe Montgomery Ward Lounge between 12 and 2 pm.The main event of the day was the introductory level presentation of the Sikh faithby Kulmeet Singh, a representative from the Sikh Coalition and good friend of theSSA. Speaking from a historical perspective, Kulmeet Singh described the development of the Sikh faith from its inception 500 years ago to the nation that it has becometoday. There were over 60 people present for the lecture, including support fromMuslim, Hindu, Christian and Jewish students. To see so many students of differentfaiths come together was a powerful indication of the desire to peace and understanding in society, which stems from the diversity and open-mindedness of UIC students, which is not only refreshing but truly inspiring.Following Kulmeet Singh, SSA member Parminder Singh spoke about the currentsituation facing Sikhs in their homeland of Punjab as well as the status of minorities inthe Indian State. He addressed the significant number of government sponsoredhuman rights abuses that have destroyed not only the Sikh community but many otherminorities in India. By revealing the scary situation presently affecting minorities inIndia, Parminder incited a spirit of collaboration among all the students present tostand together against these and other human rights violations that are killing societies.Throughout the room, there was a strong sense of unity among students of differentfaiths, beliefs and backgrounds to bring some change for the good. As a member ofthe SSA, I feel a deep sense of pride for the effort that our small but committed groupwas able to carry out on Sikh Awareness Day. It was our first attempt to reach out tothe entire UIC community, and in turn, it brought the group closer together and moredetermined to take active roles in the community. On behalf of the SSA, I d like tothank everyone who participated in learning about the Sikh faith throughout the dayand allowing us to share our faith and culture with UIC. The SSA is blossomingin Chicago and is sure to bring more good things to this campus in the yearsto come!On a personal note to all Honors College students, I want to wish everyonelots of luck for final exams and a great summer! To learn more about the Sikh faith, feel free to visit:www.sikhs.org or www.sikhcoalition.comThe Ampersand5Spring Cleaning:Lake Michigan(and you thought your room was messy!)by Joseph ShinEvery spring when the weather getswarmer and the sun begins to shine,Chicagoans are drawn by some invisibleforce to the lake.
