Membership committee representing 36 rigid plasticstakeholders – generators, collectors, recyclers, reclaimers, brand names , companies, resin producers, public policy makers

Began over four years ago Discovered grocery stores generate a considerable amount of valuable,food-grade recyclable plastics Estimated “back of napkin” - over 350 million pounds per year Estimated US non-bottle plastic recovery that year - 360 million pounds

Estimated annual volume & resin typeIdentified obstaclesBest Practices - Maximizing volume, minimizing costs ,maximizing revenue, addressing obstacles

Cadillac Fairview Pilotfor Commercial Film Project launched in April 2014 Initial focus on collecting/recycling stretchwrap from the mall’s three loading docks, educating retail tenants and collecting/identifying film samples from back-of-store Collection/recycling expanded in June 2014 to include film from selectretail tenants – targeting just PE due to recycler requirements Material collected in first 4 months showed high levels of non-PEcontamination Recycling partnership changed in August 2014, still fine-tuning CPIA to provide project support until end of October 2014; final reportwith results/recommendations in December 2014

Future Opportunities Opportunity to leverage the valuable work of the APR –tools and resources, as well as lessons learned from pilots CPIA is looking to build on successful pilots/partnershipsthat have been established in other ICI sectors and materialcategories 6 month pilot in 2015 Training and materials for participating retailer Support in establishing relationship and transportation logisticswith recycler Tracking and documentation of project success and lessons learned

The motivation for a research in developing a new grocery store service for Indian customers arises from the author‟s own experience of the grocery purchases from the grocery stores.

Chemical recycling could be a complementary solution to mechanical recycling where the latter proves to be unsuited to materially recover plastic because it is too degraded, contaminated or too complex. At the same time, increased collection of high-quality waste and design for reuse and recycling should remain the two priorities in order to increase the recycling rates for plastics and .
