The TOYOTA KATA

Practice scientific thinking every dayYou can use the five question card in any encounterThe pattern of the questions iseasy to learn, and each time youuse that pattern it strengthensyour scientific thinking.2

The root of the five question cardis this basic patternFive Coaching Questions1. What are we trying to achieve?2. Where are we now?3. What’s currently in our way?4. What’s our next experiment, and what do we expect?5. When can we see what we’velearned from that step?3

Here is the Starter Kata4

It’s called the Coaching KataAsking the questions helps make the learner’s currentthinking visible, so the coach can give feedbackIt’s like asking an athlete to take a few swingsor a music student to play a few bars, so thecoach can see what the student is doing.5

Add clarifying questionsThe five questions are the mainheadings of a daily coaching cycle. After each of the 5 questions thecoach usually also asks clarifyingquestions, seeking more detailrelative to that question category.6

Find the threshold of knowledgeYou may find the learner’s current threshold of knowledgeat any point in a coaching cycle. At that point,go right to question four.7

The next two pages are printer / copier templatesfor the five-question card. For more details, refer to the Toyota KataPractice Guide. It’s available on Amazon.comor wherever books are sold.As with any Starter Kata, begin by practicing thisStarter Kata exactly as shown, until its patternbecomes somewhat automatic and habitual foryou. Simply read the card out loud as it is written.Once you’ve learned the pattern through practice, then you can build on it to develop your own style,as long as the core pattern remains intact.
