UnderstandingTransubstantiationWhat is substance and what are species, accidents or external appearances?Theologians and philosophers call the external characteristics(such as the size, color, shape, etc.) of an object, animal or person“accidents” (from the Latin word meaning to happen) or “species”.Therefore we can say that color is an external characteristic, which is visible and which “happens” to a substance,(meaning it exists within a substance). As in the example ofthe red chair, the color red refers to the chair, but does notexist within itself. There is an orange vase in the drawing. Now I will paint the vase blue. Now the vase is blue, but it remained always a vase, the color changedfrom orange to blue. So we can say that the substance of the vaseremains always the same, it did not change (a vase is a vase), while thespecies, in this case the color (or external appearances or accidents) ofthe vase changed from orange to blue.ConclusionIn our example we will say then that the substance was not modifiedbut the species changed (meaning the orange color became blue).3

NOW IT IS UP TO YOUTO EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENSIN THE NEXT EXAMPLELet’s take this chair that Claire has in her bedroom: it is brown. Today Claire has decided topaint her chair red so it will match the new bedspread her grandmother gave her.The chair is now red in color. Now tell me: what has changed in respect to before?1. The substance of Claire’s chair changed.2. The species (in this case, the color) of Claire’s chair changed.3. The substance and the species of Claire’s chair changed.4

NOW TRY TOFORMULATE YOUROWN EXAMPLES25

CRUMBIn the example in the picture the species (or outward properties)of Crumb have changed over time, but his substance, meaninghis essence, his existence as that dog named Crumb, did notchange. Crumb is always Crumb, whether he is a newbornpuppy or a two years old dog.Crumb as a newbornhad light fur. Here he is 6 months old. Here at three months: someparts of his fur have darkened. Here is Crumb today.6

Finally we arrive at transubstantiationIn the Eucharist, on the other hand, the opposite happens:Before the ConsecrationAfter the ConsecrationThe species (properties) of the bread and wine remain the same whether it is before orafter the Consecration. The Consecrated Host remains, in fact, the same size, color, taste . and the same goesfor the Consecrated Wine. The substance of the Host (or bread) and Wine undergo a change: after the Consecration, the substance of the Host and Wine become in fact the Body and Blood of Jesus.7

This change of substance is calledTransubstantiationWrite the exact description under each drawing and number them according to the order inwhich they occur.Let me give you a hand:Before the Consecration of the bread Liturgy After the Consecration of the Bread After theConsecration of the Wine Before the Consecration of the wine8

At the Last Supper, when Jesus takes the bread and chalice of wine in his handsand says, “This is my BODY This is my BLOOD”, he intends to say:Which is the correct response?1. This reality that I hold in my hands is truly my Body and my Blood2. This reality that I hold in my hands represents my body and my blood3. This reality that I have in my hands symbolizes my body and my blood4. This reality that I have in my hands contains the virtues of my body andmy blood together with the substance of bread and wineIf you answered immediately, thenyou are a true theologian! Perhapshowever you do not know what a theologianis. Now I will explain it to you: a theologianis one who studies everything there is toknow about God.9

SO, WHATSHOULD WEDO? SHOULDWE GO TOTHE MOVIES?GOOD IDEA! ANEW MOVIE ISOUT STARRINGMY FAVORITEACTOR!IN THEATERS? DON’T YOUREMEMBER WHAT THEPARISH PRIEST TOLD US?TODAY IS EUCHARISTICADORATION! IWISH SO MUCHTHAT THEYUNDERSTOODHOW IMPORTANTAND WONDERFULIT IS TO BE WITHYOU!JESUS, HELP ME TO FIND THE RIGHT WAY TO EXPLAIN TO MY FRIENDSHOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO STAY CLOSE TO YOU AND RECOGNIZE YOUARE TRULY PRESENT IN EVERY TABERNACLE IN THE WORLD.

THAT WAS AGREATMOVIE,WASN’T IT?GREATIDEA.THANKSCLAIRE.BYE! WELL, DIDYOU HAVE FUN?DO YOU FEELLIKE COMING TOMY HOUSE?THEN WE CANHAVE A SNACKTOGETHER!I HOPE THATYOUR MOMMADECHOCOLATECOOKIES!SHE MADETHEMTHISMORNING.THEYAREREALLYGOOD!HEY, THAT DOESN’TCOUNT! YOU’RE JUSTUSING SNACKS TO GET USTO ATTEND A CATECHISMLESSON. THAT’S NOTFAIR!OH, NO!WHEN AMI GOINGTO LEARNHOW TOKEEPQUIET?LOOK, I HAVE NOTHING TODO WITH THIS. I DIDN’TKNOW THAT YOU WERECOMING. ANYWAY, THINKABOUT IT, THE LESSON ISN’TSUCH A BAD IDEA!CATECHISM LESSON?WHAT ARE YOU ALLTALKING ABOUT? I DON’TUNDERSTAND! ANYWAY, IAM BROTHER MARK,CLAIRE’S UNCLE. ARE YOUFRIENDS WITH MY NIECE?YES. MY NAME ISANDREW ANDTHEY ARE SARAHAND MARTHATHIS AFTERNOON THEYWERE SUPPOSED TOHAVE COME WITH ME TOEUCHARISTICADORATION BUTINSTEAD THEY WENT TOTHE MOVIES.OH BOY, I SMELLTROUBLE! WELL, TODAY THEREWAS A GREAT MOVIEOUT AND WE HADFUN! EUCHARISTICADORATION ON THEOTHER HAND IS A BITBORING!NO, I DIDN’T MEANTHAT, WELL, WHAT IMEAN IS IF JESUS WEREREALLY PRESENT INTHE CHURCHSTANDING THERE WITHUS IT WOULD BEDIFFERENT!SO, YOUWERE SAYINGTHAT YOUDIDN’T GO TOEUCHARISTICADORATION?EVEN IF YOU DON’TSEE HIM, JESUS ISREALLY THERE. JUSTLIKE WHEN HEWALKED THE STREETSOF NAZARETH 2,000YEARS AGO!UNCLE MARK, I READTHAT THE BLESSEDSHEPARDS OFFATIMA, FRANCISCO,JACINTA AND MARTOCALLED THEEUCHARIST THE“HIDDEN JESUS”.SURELY, THE LORD ISVERY AUTHENTIC,BUT HOW IS THISPOSSIBLE?JESUS IS GOD AND HE ISOMNIPOTENT. JUST AS HECREATED EVERYTHING FROMNOTHING, HE WAS ALSO ABLE TOREMAIN AMONG MEN BYDECIDING TO INSTITUTE HIMSELFINTO THE EUCHARIST!DOES BEINGWITH JESUSSEEMBORING TOYOU?I EVENCALL ITTHATTODAY!WE ARE LUCKIER THAN THOSE WHO LIVED INJESUS’ TIME AND GOT TO KNOW HIM IN PERSON.THINK ABOUT IT: BY ENTERING ANY CHURCH WEALWAYS FIND THE TRUE PRESENCE OF JESUS INTHE TABERNACLE! WE CAN VISIT HIM WHENEVERWE WANT AND HE IS ALWAYS THERE TOWELCOME US. WE HAVE GOD ALWAYS WITH US,JUST LEAVE HOME AND GO INTO ANY CHURCH!IT IS MARVELOUS! BUT WHY IS IT THAT SOMANY PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND IT,UNCLE MARK? THEY ARE PREOCCUPIEDWITH SO MANY THINGS, THEY STAND IN MILELONG LINES TO GO TO MUSEUMS, SPORTINGEVENTS, CONCERTS AND MOVIE THEATERS,BUT THEY WON’T GO FIND JESUS?ONE MUST PRAY TO GOD TO ALWAYS GIVE US MORE FAITH ANDLOVE TOWARDS THE EUCHARIST. UNDERSTANDING THEEUCHARIST REQUIRES A LOT OF GRACE. ALL OF THE SAINTSWERE ALWAYS VERY DEVOTED TO THE EUCHARIST AND SPENTMANY HOURS IN ADORATION BEFORE THE TABERNACLE.

IN CHAPTER 28 OF THEGOSPEL OF ST. MATTHEWJESUS PROMISED:“And behold, I am withyou always, until theend of the age.”EUCHARISTIC ADORATION IS VERYIMPORTANT: IT MEANS BEING CLOSETO JESUS AND RECOGNIZING THAT HEIS OUR LORD!YOU KNOW UNCLE MARK, IMET A NUN DURING APILGRIMAGE AND SHE TOLDME THAT EVERY DAY SHESPENT SEVERAL HOURSADORING CHRIST PRESENTIN THE TABERNACLE.AND YOU READERS, WHATDO YOU THINK? IS JESUSREALLY HERE WITH USEVERYDAY OR NOT?IT’S TRUE.THAT’S HOWIT IS. THATNUN IS SURERIGHT!THE NUN SAYS THAT EVER SINCE SHE STARTEDEUCHARISTIC ADORATION SHE DOESN’T NEEDTO WATCH TV BECAUSE BY ADORING JESUS SHEHAS THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE BEFORE HER!WE CANEVEN MEETMORE THANONCE!THAT’SA GOODIDEA,ISN’T IT?LISTEN, I JUST GOT AN IDEA! WHYDON’T YOU COME BACK HERE NEXTWEEK? WE CAN TALK A LITTLE,MAYBE THERE ARE OTHER THINGSTHAT YOU ARE NOT SO CLEAR ONAND I PROMISE I WILL CONVINCE MYSISTER TO MAKE MORE COOKIES!

IT’S AN INTERESTINGPROPOSAL, ESPECIALLY IFTHERE WILL BE COOKIES!MARTHA!! COULD YOUTRY BEING A LITTLEMORE SERIOUS ONCEIN A WHILE?BYE,EVERYONE!SEE YOULATER!HA, HA, HA! THISTIME I WAS THEONE JOKING! WEACCEPT THEPROPOSAL!

FOR A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING1. How is Jesus present in the Consecrated Host keptin the Church Tabernacles or solemnly displayedin the pyx?2. Is He present in the same way in which He ispresent in a park or a movie theater?3. Were the Apostles that lived alongside Jesus twothousand years ago more fortunate than us because theyphysically saw Him? Do you think that we are equally asfortunate as or less fortunate than the Apostles? Try tosubstantiate your opinion.4. What is the external signal located near the Tabernacle thatindicates that the Eucharistic Presence of Jesus is in the Church?5. Upon entering Church, is it most important to greet: A Saint, the Blessed Virgin or the Presence of Jesus in the Tabernacle?6. With what gesture does one demonstratereverence towards the Real Presence of Jesusin the Holy Sacrament upon entering Church?15
