The lookRust is a natural oxidation process that creates irregularpatches of yellow/ orange/red hues with highs and lows.You can often see through layers of rust revealing theoriginal and/or aged colour of the wall.Two images of real rust. Lookcarefully how the patches are formed.The original colour black in the back,followed by the golden rust patches(the older the lighter). Then followedby the reds/orange patches. On topof this the images show dark rustcovering parts of the golden and redrust patches.
To create the illusion onwalls, start by paintingthe subsurfaceMake sure the suction of the walls iseven. In case of doubt apply a coatof UNDERCOAT first.Wall painted withAutentico Vintage,colour NocturnalMottled effect withpatches of Nocturnaland Dark RustPaint the subsurface using AutenticoVintage, colour Nocturnal. Vintageis a porous paint and is ideal as abase for rust effects.While the paint is still wet, paintpatches with Vintage, colour DarkRust. Make smudges to create amottled effect showing patchesof black and lighter hues, just likea beginning oxidation processwould do. Let the coats dry beforecontinuing.
Next step is tocreate the firstoxidation layerIn the illusion of rust, thisis the oldest layer.Mix 1 part of GOLDEN RUSTpower with 1 part of AutenticoRUST BASE.The result is a thick, grainy paste.Apply tby brush in an irregularpattern. While the paste is stillwet, apply dry powder ofGOLDEN RUST in the patches ofGOLDEN RUST paste to createhighlights.Patches of GOLDEN RUST appliedwith a paste of GOLDEN RUSTLet dry to avoid smudges with thenext layers.
Next step is tocreate the secondoxidation layerIn the illusion of rust, thisis the next layer.Mix 1 part of RED RUSTpowder with 1 part ofAutentico RUST BASE.The result is a thick andgrainy paste.Apply by brush in an irregularpattern on top and overlappingthe patches of GOLDEN RUST.Only cover parts of the prior layerof GOLDEN RUST.Patches of RED RUST appliedwith a paste of RED RUSTWhile the paste is still wet, applydry powder of RED RUST in thepatches of RED RUST paste.Let dry to avoid smutches withthe last layer.
Next step is tocreate the thirdoxidation layerIn the illusion of rust, thisis the last layer.Mix 1 part of DARK RUSTpowder with 1 part ofAutentico RUST BASE.The result is a thick andgrainy paste.Apply by brush in anirregular pattern on top andoverlapping the other patches.Only cover parts of the prior layers.While the paste is still wet, applydry powder of DARK RUST in thepatches of DARK RUST paste.Patches of DARK RUST appliedwith a paste of DARK RUSTLet dry and enjoy your work.
Finish andprotectionRUST IN A JAR on a wall doesn’tneed additional protection unlessapplied in high traffic areas.In these cases we recommendprotection with either AutenticoSEALER of AutenticoFLOOR VARNISH.Autentico SEALER will penetratethe surface making your work waterrepellent but slightly darker.Autentico FLOOR VARNISHcreates an extra film on top ofyour work.
