Member ProfilesEach month we will be interviewing an Aerie and Auxiliary member to find out whothey are. This month, we talk with Harry and Bonnie OsbourneBonnie, your real name is Lavonne? LaVaughnYou both just celebrated birthdays and an anniversary. I’m 92 (Harry) and I’m 91 (Bonnie) andwe’ve been married 71 years (although when I asked them how long they’d been married, they had tothink about it a minute). We met on the dance floorHave you always lived in Rochester? Since 1976. Prior to that we lived in Austin for 23 years. What did you both do before retiring? Harry: I worked for NW Bell mainly in sales selling stuff anddealing with wire leads for party lines. We went from multiple lines to 4 to 2 and then 1 line. (Sidenote for those of you that don’t know what a party line is, Wiki says “A party line is a local looptelephone circuit that is shared by multiple telephone service subscribers”. Basically, manyhouseholds shared one phone line but with different numbers and you could listen in on otherconversations. A great source for rumors and gossip!). I was also involved in the Telephone Pioneersand held state office for that organization. It was a charity organization and we did communityprojects. We would have conferences all over from Vancouver BC to Orlando. Bonnie: I worked for13 years at John Adams as a cafeteria monitor, keeping order in the dining room. Do you have anymemorable stories? Well I mainly prevented food fights and kept kids from smoking. There was onenaughty boy named Larry that I remember. I caught him smoking and I took him by the hand to theprincipal’s office. The principal said I didn’t have to walk him in by the hand and I said yes, I didbecause otherwise he would run away. (Another side note Larry Ritten did not attend John Adams!).What are some of the remarkable changes you’ve seen in Rochester? The growth! There were50,000 people in 1976 and now we’re almost 120,000You both have been Eagles members for many years. What positions did you hold and did youhold any State positions? Harry: All the chairs but no state positions. Bonnie: Outside guard.Harry, you worked with the Telethon for many years setting up phones and doing auditing/moneycollections. Are there any moments that stand out in your mind? About 30 years ago we did apremise (?) visit to a hotel room to pick up a pledge from a dignitary. I actually didn’t go to the roomto get the money, but I recorded the pledge. It was 20,000! Many people brought in cash insuitcases back then from all over. Then there was another time when Bernie Lusk (the Telethon host)slipped away for a drink he liked to sneak out and have a drink once in a while and he closed thedoors on the telephone lines and cut off the telephones. What is the secret to long marriage? Both said just agree with each otherWhat is the one thing that endears you to each other? Bonnie: Harry is a gentle person and wenever have problems. We had 5 kids but lost 3 and we made it through that together. Harry: LoveYou two were foodies long before it became a hip thing. You’d do lutefisk and meatball dinners, festivals, and new restaurants. What is/was your favorite? We were in a card club for over 60years and we’d meet to go to new places to eat all over SE MN. Our favorite was Jimmy Martel’s in StPeter. His daughter was married to John Denver at one time.Your favorite or special place now to eat? The Eagles. (keep reading on next page).

As we move back to “normal” after Covid, what do you want tosee again that hasn’t yet returned? Being able to go everywherewhenever you want. And to have open seating at church sitwherever you want.Harry, what is your saying or joke for today? What is Bible anacronym for? Best Information Before Leaving Earth. It prettymuch covers everything!Harry and Bonnie have an unconditional love and admiration foreach other that is truly the stuff of fairy tales, but it is real! Theyhave many stories and Harry usually has a joke or wise saying toshare. Ask them how to play Spite, a card game they play every night before bed. They keep scorebut Bonnie says somehow the scorekeeper (Harry) always wins. Also ask Harry about being a “GandyDancer” for the railroad before he worked at NW Bell.Around the ClubNew Marquee is Up and Running! We will be able to run special messages for parties, events and advertise all our club activities!
