The University fosters academicexcellence within a nurturing environment andprovides a strong liberal arts foundation leading toprofessional careers and advanced studies.Central State University is dedicated to: providing a nurturing and culturally enrichedlearning environment; stimulating in students an intellectual curiosity anda continuous search for knowledge; teaching students to think critically andcommunicate effectively; instilling in students an aspiration for excellencethrough teaching, service, and scholarly research; preparing students to address the challenges of atechnologically oriented world; providing quality educational programs in scientificand technological fields;HISTORYCentral State University’s history begins with ourparent institution Wilberforce University, named inhonor of the great abolitionist William Wilberforce.Established at Tawawa Springs, Ohio, in 1856, it isaffiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal(A.M.E.) Church and is one of the oldest Blackadministered institutions of higher education in thenation. In 1887, the Ohio General Assembly enactedlegislation that created a Combined Normal andIndustrial Department at Wilberforce University. Theobjectives of this new state-sponsored departmentwere to provide teacher training and vocationaleducation, and to stabilize these programs byassuring a financial base similar to that of other statesupported institutions. The statute establishing the Combined Normal and9

Industrial Department declared that the institutionwas ‘open to all applicants of good and moralcharacter, thereby indicating no limitations as to race, color, sex, or creed. It was clear, however, that theDepartment and its successors were designed to servethe educational needs of African-American students.developing partnerships within Ohio’s agriculturalindustry; enhancing facilities; and engaging the localcommunities, all for the future growth andsustainability of the University.Central State University embraces change; but onething that has not changed is its continuingcommitment to providing an excellent, affordableeducation to residents of Ohio and beyond. Our futureis bright!Although this Department operated as part ofWilberforce University in most respects, a separateboard of trustees was appointed to govern the statefinanced operations. In 1941, the Departmentexpanded from a two- to a four-year program, and in1947, it legally split from Wilberforce, becoming theCollege of Education and Industrial Arts atWilberforce. The name was changed in 1951 toCentral State College, and in 1965, the institutionachieved university status. The University has grownsteadily since its founding. In recent years, it hasadded new academic programs, established a newCollege of Engineering, Science, Technology, andAgriculture and constructed a new Student Center, anew academic building, and four new residence halls. This year it will complete construction of a newresidential wellness center.LOCATIONSCentral State University’s main campus is located inWilberforce, Ohio, four miles northeast of Xenia and18 miles east of Dayton.
