TwelveOrdinaryMen

Twelve Ordinary MenAll 12 men (exception Judas Iscariot) were men from GalileeGalilee consisted of small towns and villagesIt’s people were not eliteThey were not known for their educationThey were the commonest of the common. They were fishermen and farmers. One was a tax collector (lowest of the low)One was a ZealotFour possibly as many as seven were fishermenOthers probably craftsmen or tradesmenTheir outstanding quality: Ordinariness!Jesus deliberately passed over those who were aristocraticand influential and chose men who were from the dregs ofsociety.Ø He personally selected them in spite of their faults.ØØØØØØØØØØØØLuke 24.25“Foolish andslow of heart ”Matt.26.56“All thedisciplesforsookHim andfled.”

Twelve Ordinary MenØ The religious leaders of Jesus day(like the vast majority ofreligious celebrities even today) were blind leaders of theblind.Ø They were blind to the miracles that Jesus did before theirvery eyes.Ø They didn’t regard Him as the Messiah but rather as anintruder.Ø The chief priests and ruling council of Israel led the crowdin a cry for Jesus’ blood from the very outset.Ø He looked away from the self-righteous religious leadersand rather chose instead simple men of faith.Ø What irritated the religious leaders was not the miraclesbut they could not tolerate being called sinners!Ø They hated Him for His message and ultimately executedHim. (Luke 4.18).

“As Jesus passedon there, He sawa man namedMatthew sitting atthe tax office. AndHe said to him,“Follow Me.” Sohe arose andfollowed Him.Matthew 9.9None of the 12were as notoriousas a sinner asMatthew prior tobeing called. He was evidentlya humble selfeffacing man heonly mentions hisname 2 times inhis Gospel.Matthew, the Publican

Matthew, Tax CollectorØ Legitimate tax collectors: Mt. 22.21; Rom. 13.7Ø “Render unto Caesar the things that areCaesars.”Ø “Render taxes to whom taxes are due ”Ø 2 Kinds of Tax Collectors:Ø GabbaiØ General tax collectorsØ Property tax, income tax, poll taxØ Taxes were assessed by officialsØ Very little graft went on hereØ Similar to state, local, fed, tax assessments, today.

Matthew, Tax CollectorØ Tax Collectors: The Mokhes ( 2 kinds)Ø The Great MokhesØ Stayed behind the scenesØ Hired collectors to collect taxes for himØ Zacchaeus (chief tax collector) (Lk.19.2)Ø The Little Mokhes (Matthew)Ø He manned a tax office (Matt.9.9)Ø They were resented the mostØ No self-respecting Jew did this workØ He was forbidden to sacrificeØ He was forbidden in the templeØ He was the worst of the worst

Matthew, Chosen by JesusMatt.9.9TaxCollector.Ø Jesus said, “Follow Me.” He arose and followed Him instantly.Ø He abandoned his tax officeØ Irreversible—no going backØ There were no shortage of money-grubbers waitingØ WHY, did he drop everything at once like that?Ø Materialist (by definition)—Little MokhesØ Tax collectors were the most despised people in Israel.Ø Lower than HerodiansØ Scorned more than even the Roman soldiers.Ø Tax collectors viewed socially on same level as harlots.Ø Matt. 21.32: “Ø 3 Tax collectors are specifically mentioned in N.T.Ø Zacchaeus: Lk.19.2-10 (Forgiven).Ø Publican : Lk.18.10-14 (Forgiven) –Publican/Pharisee to prayØ Matthew :Ø Luke 15.1: “all tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdombefore you.”The lastcredential wemight expect foran apostle!

Matthew, Chosen by JesusØØØØØØØØØHe Probably:Tortured soul/guiltHad a spiritual hunger for truthHad seen/heard of Jesus and Hismiracles/workKnew the Old Testament (His gospelquotes 99 times)Pursued study of O.T. on his own houseHe understood the O.T. promises re:MessiahAfter his call, threw a great banquet inhis home (Mk.2.15)Ø Luke 5.29-32:”Why are You eatingw/sinners/tax collectKnew that inherent in Jesus’ call waspromise forgiveness

MatthewØ Early writings and traditions say that Matthewministered to the Jews both in Israel andabroad for many years.Ø It is also said that he was martyred by beingburned at the stake.Ø So, the man who walked away from a lucrativecareer w/o ever giving it a second thoughtremained willing to give his all for Christ to thevery end!

“Then Thomas, who is called theTwin, said to hisfellow disciples,“Let us also go,that we may diewith Him.”John 11.16“Doubting”ThomasProbablysomewhat of anegative person.Probablyanticipated theworst ofeverything.Thomas, the Pessimist

ThomasØ John 11.1-2: Lazarus story (Mary and Martha) from BethanyØ “Lord the man whom you love is sick ”Ø Come and heal himØ Jesus said it is not unto death ”Ø Ultimate purpose was for Jesus glorification when Hewould raise him from the dead.Ø Jesus: “Let us go to Judea again.”Ø Disciples said, "lately the Jews sought to stone You,and are You going there again?”Ø Reluctant disciples; now is not a good time to go back!Ø Thomas speaks up: “Let us also go, that we may die withHim.”Ø Pessimistic: Yes, but also courageous and certainly notdoubting! (Heroic pessimism).Ø Optimist: Let’s go, everything will work out ok; we willbe fine.Ø Easier for optimist to be loyal—expects the best.

ThomasØ Thomas profound love for Jesus shows up again in John 14.Ø “I go to prepare a place for you, and where I go you know, andthe way you know.”Ø V.5: “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how canwe know the way?’Ø You’re leaving; We’ll never get to where You are going; wedon’t even know how to get there;Ø It was a better plan for us to die with you!Ø Thomas was a man of deep love; he never wanted to beseparated from his Savior and friend.Ø John 20: his worst fears came to pass—Jesus died and he didn’t.Ø V.24: all but Thomas was in the upper roomØ Why? Pessimistic, melancholy, negative, alone, thinking theworst. He was probably in no mood to be in a crowd.Ø “Unless I see His hands, etc.Ø Mk.16.10-11: The others did not believe either until sawJesus.

ThomasØ John 20.26: Jesus—”Reach your finger in here, look at My hands;reach your hand in here, and put it into My side.”Ø The Lord was amazingly gentle with ThomasØ Thomas had been grief stricken, brokenhearted, uncertaintyØ Jesus understands our weakness too; Heb.4.15!Ø He understands our doubt; our uncertainty;Ø He is patient with our pessimism.Ø V.28: “My Lord and My God!”Ø Let those who question the deity of Christ, meetThomas.Ø Ancient testimony says that Thomas carried the Gospel allthe way to India.Ø Early writers say that Thomas was martyred by being runthrough with a spear how fitting for one whose faith cameof age when he saw the spear mark in His Master’s side andfor one who longed to be reunited with his Lord!!

Lessons for UsØ Interesting that God used a publican like Matthew and apessimist like Thomas.Ø Matthew was the vilest of sinners prior to JesusØ Thomas was a tender-hearted, moody, melancholy person.Ø Both were transformed by Christ in the same way Hetransformed others.Ø He can use anyone---personality, status, family background, areall immaterial to God.Ø They all (except Judas) had one thing in common: theirwillingness to acknowledge their own sinfulness and their needfor God and His grace.Ø He met them with grace, mercy, kindness, compassion, andforgiveness and transformed their lives that would glorify Him.Ø He does that for all who truly trust Him even today through thepower of the Gospel.Ø He sits at God’s right hand today pleading our case before throne

Twelve Ordinary Men Ø All 12 men (exception Judas Iscariot) were men from Galilee Ø Galilee consisted of small towns and villages Ø It’s people were not elite Ø They were not known for their education Ø They were the commonest of the common. Ø They were fishermen and farmers. Ø On

As the demand on the NHS grows in years to come, more vacancies will need to be filled. With hundreds of health and medical companies based here, the area is considered to be one of the UK’s top three .
