ACOUSTI-SEAL ENCORE ACHIEVING OPTIMAL ACOUSTICSAcousti-Seal Encore movable walls have been laboratory tested to an industryleading 56 STC. How does that translate into an actual space?STC or Sound Transmission Class isa two-digit number describing theacoustical control of a partition in asound laboratory setting. This methodof ranking is the most widely acceptedstandard throughout the industry.Virtually every operable partitionmanufacturer conducts laboratorytests and must be able to validate theirproducts results.To be certified as a sound laboratory, alab must be constructed to meet strictASTM specifications and be certified bya third party. A quality sound laboratoryhas the ability to take everything out ofthe surrounding environment except forthe partition that is being tested.Therefore, an STC rating calculatesonly the partition itself without any ofthe surrounding construction. This isvery important to understand becausewhen a partition is placed into an actualbuilding, that building will not be builtto the same standards as the soundlaboratory and therefore will affect theacoustical performance within the space.When you consider that an operablewall may represent only 10% of thesurface area in a space, you quicklyrealize it takes more than just a greatoperable wall to achieve optimalacoustical control within the space.Acoustical success takes a greatacoustical plan for the surroundingconstruction by the Acoustician,Architect, and General Contractor. Onemust understand that it is not realisticto duplicate the sound lab environmentin an actual space, but duplicating theenvironment as closely as possiblewill determine the overall quality of theacoustical control within each space.The guidelines for duplicating thesound lab environment within an actualspace are detailed in the ASTM E557specification.ASTM E557 is the blueprint for thesuccessful construction surroundingacoustically rated operable partitions.The ASTM E557 specification can bepurchased online at www.ASTM.organd is an absolutely essential guide foryour spaces overall acoustical success.The STC of your operable partition isbasically irrelevant if the surroundingconstruction is not up to the ASTM E557specification. You will lose the intendedacoustical control of the operablepartitions through the surroundingconstruction and unrecognizedconstruction errors.often be eliminated or diminished byinstalling baffling, sound barriers, or sound-absorbing insulation in key areas.Above the Partition TrackA plenum above a partition can allowsound to pass up through the ceiling onone side and down to the other side. Toeliminate this problem, a barrier (witha sound transmission loss equal to orgreater than the partition) should becreated above the partition.Partition-to-Wall ConnectionsThe following are the most commonconstruction errors in regards tosuccessful acoustical control andoperable partitions:Flanking PathsAirborne sound can be transmitted toadjoining rooms by way of adjacentdoors, door grilles, air handling ducts,ceiling plenums, or floors and wallspassing beneath the partition or fromroom-to-room at the ends of thepartitions. These flanking paths canOperable partitions use various methodsto connect with permanent walls andpartitions. These include fixed jambsmounted to the partition or permanent wall,recessed jambs on the permanent surface,and multi-point bulb seals.
