C H O O SING C ARPETgraded Extra Heavy Duty contain more fibre persquare cm – and being denser will last longer.Generally speaking, the heavier weight thecarpet is the better quality it will be.PriceWool War III n.The infamous stampedeof sibling rivals, battling it out atop durablewool carpet.Carpet can add so much style, warmthand comfort to your home. Choosingwhich carpet is best for you can often be adaunting decision when confronted withsuch a large array of carpet styles.Your carpet plays a major part in the totalinterior ‘look’ you’re trying to achieve. It shouldwork with your décor, with your lifestyle andfamily situation. Most importantly you shouldlove the choice you make.ColourColour is the key decider for many people whenchoosing between carpet styles. Here’s somethings to note: Darker colours will make a room feel smallerand cosier; Lighter colours create a sense of spaceand light; Make sure you take a sample home and lookat it in both daylight and under artificial light, and in different areas of the room; Carpet can appear up to 20% lighter whenlaid on the floor so what appears dark in asample may end up looking more mid-tonewhen installed. Why not experiment with our online3D Floor Designer tool on our website atwww.cavbrem.co.nz?Style and TextureCharmeuse is a chunky, velvety 100% pure New Zealand woolcut-pile carpet. It’s tough enough to stand up to all thosedaily skirmishes, yet soft enough to provide a truly luxuriousunderfoot experience. To see our complete range, visitcavbrem.com.au or call 1800 251 172 for your local store. There are three different types of construction, all with different features. Cut pile carpets – A cut pile carpet generallyhas a more luxurious feel than otherstyles of carpet. Cut pile carpets can varyfrom a resilient hard twist (which has theequivalent of a ‘perm’ to hold the twist in),to a softer plush pile (where the fibres standup straight) or a deeply sensuous shagpile.Cut pile carpets do show footprints morereadily which can vacuum out, but are alsosubject to a condition known as ‘shading’or ‘pemanent pile reversal’ where areas ofpile bend and catch the light differently. This is a standard characteristic of cut pilecarpets and you need to be aware of thisbefore you buy – it is not a manufacturingfault. Plush pile carpets (which have a softvelvety feel) are particularly prone to thiswhereas hardtwist cut pile carpets will showmuch less. There is no way of predicting howmuch a carpet will shade once it is laid, andtheories abound as to how it occurs – but nosolution has ever been found. Loop pile carpets can offer a classic or casuallook depending on the style – level looppile or textured loop pile where there is avariation in the height of the loops. Loop pilecarpets are easy care, don’t show footprintsand are particularly suited to busy homes orthose with young children. But be aware thatsome loop pile carpets – particularly oneswith uneven loop heights can be attractivefor cats and dogs to get their claws into. Cut and loop pile carpets combineaspects of both of the above – the cutpile contrasting with the loops to createa distinctive pattern which will retain itscrispness on the floor. A mix of textureshere creates added interest and (dependingon the pattern) can range from the boldlydramatic to a classic and tailored look.QualityThe weight and grading of the carpet are themost reliable indicator of the carpet’s ability toperform well, irrespective of the style. CarpetsQuality really does pay for itself. If you’replanning to stay in your home for any lengthof time, you want a carpet that will last thedistance and still look great in five or tenyears, not shabby after two. So while price is acritical decision factor, you need to be confidentthat saving a few dollars now, won’t lead todisappointment in the very near future.Fibre choiceBoth wool and synthetics have their advantagesand disadvantages. Wool is a natural fibre thatbreathes helping create a drier and healthierindoor air environment. It acts as a naturalhumidity regulator – keeping your housewarmer in winter and cooler in summer. Itcan absorb up to a third of its own weight inmoisture without feeling damp or cold, and itreleases the moisture back into the air whenthe atmosphere dries out. The temperaturevariations between summer and winter withwool carpeting are much less than withman-made fibres, ensuring it doesn’t getoverly hot or cold.Wool carpet is easy care and most spillscan be cleaned up if they are attended topromptly. Solution-dyed nylons are the moststain-resistant but no carpet is completely stainproof and all come with certain stain exclusions.Synthetic carpets that are not solution-dyed areunlikely to carry stain-resistant warranties.Wool as a natural fibre will exhibit somefading over time, especially in areas exposed tostrong UV light. Synthetic carpets that are notsolution-dyed can also fade. We recommend thefitting of UV protection to windows and doors ifyou do not have solution-dyed nylon carpet. For more information on how to choose, please visit our buying guide on the CavalierBremworth website www.cavbrem.co.nzhomeprize.co.nzE N T E R T O W I N A H O M E P R I Z E PA C K A G E O F YO U R D R E A M S45CAV0704 Wool War III The Home Guide 182x269 FP AW.indd 130/07/15 5:40 pm

BAT HRO O M PLANNINGFor a drier, warmer, healthierhome, insist on Showerdome. The bathroom is an important room inany home (they are also one of the mostawkward rooms to design). Most are smalland require careful planning to make themworkable. The renovation process canbe very disruptive and, unlike cosmeticredecoration, if a mistake is made it is noteasy to change.Another major problem is the hidden andunexpected problems which can arise fromremoving and replacing existing bathroomware.Because the room is a wet area, undetectedand severe water damage may have beenoccurring for years under showers, baths, toiletsand vanity units and when you remove the unitsyou may be faced with unexpected and costlystructural rebuilds. Sometimes the damage isimpossible to detect – as with all your majorrenovation projects, you should seek the adviceof a building professional before you decide ona bathroom renovation.TapwareIn an otherwise plain bathroom, tapware canspruce up the effect. If the cabinets are sound, replacing tapware and handles can have adramatic effect. Good tapware is crucial bothas a working element and to complete thestyle of a bathroom. Some taps do not workwith existing plumbing arrangements – beforemaking the final purchase, you should ensureyour tapware choice is compatible.Bathroom heating and ventilationBeing a high moisture area effective heatingand adequate ventilation are essential. Modernhomes are particularly vulnerable to mouldin damp areas (because they are draft free),so ensure you factor these into your design.A simple and cost effective installation of aShowerdome can make a huge difference tomany bathrooms!Creating the final effectOnce you have decided the changes you wish tomake and the type of products you want, createa ‘Colour Board’ such as interior designersuse. You should cut out magazine pictures ofall the ideas and colour choices you want forthe room and stick them onto a board (manycompanies supply small samples free of chargeof the materials to be used). Even if you use aprofessional to design the area – you shouldspend the time deciding on the effect you wishto achieve. Place your final design board in thebathroom for at least a few days so you canvisualise the final effect.Updating Existing BathroomsRemoving clutterMost bathrooms seem to collect clutter(shampoo soldiers, almost empty makeup orhygiene products, back scratchers that AuntyMary gave as a Xmas present etc.).The best way is to remove everything fromdrawers, countertops and inside the vanity. Then start with a plan to place frequently useditems in the most convenient place.Review the storage options and purchasesome appropriate storage solutions such asdrawer dividers, see-through bins, hooks, trays, and decorative containers for the countertop.Inside a vanity or cupboard is the perfectplace to install some of the storage productsavailable (clear plastic drawer units, large roundturntables, see-thru boxes, and bins of all sorts).Towel RailsInstall extra towel rails (on the end of a cabinet, behind or on the back of a door) anywhere thatwon’t interfere with cabinets or heating vents.Hooks are ideal to hang a robe or extra towel(behind the door, next to the shower, near thesink). Towels hanging on rails or hooks lookneater than draping them over the bath orshower stall.FurnishingsLarger bathrooms can benefit by using furniture.A small chest or wall cupboard may fit into anempty corner or along an unused wall. Furniturecan add both storage and style, and warm upthe space.Replace the handlesIf the drawers and cabinets are sound – newhardware is effective without breaking thebudget. Make sure all the knobs or handlesmatch for continuity.Update towel railsFor some reason many bathrooms have a varietyof towel rail styles (in older homes they mayhave been there for years). Replace old towelrails with something new and stylish.Replace the mirrorMoisture affects many bathroom mirrors(especially the older style). Replace old mirrors(the bigger the better providing they are in scalewith the rest of the room).ContainersHide essential items inside decorativecontainers (cotton balls in a ceramic jar, cottonbuds in a metal box, facecloths rolled up on apottery tray, liquid soap in a ceramic container, eyeliner pencils in an earthenware mug, orcosmetic items inside a lidded basket).AccessoriesUnusual accessories can be quite effective inbathrooms (A wine rack for rolled up towels, attractive vases can be layered with sand andshells or moss and twigs for an inexpensivedecorative feature, ceramic planter pots fortoilet rolls or as a wastebasket).ShelvingDepending on the size of the room a smallbookcase could be useful for towels or a shelfto hang over the toilet suite. (Don’t clutter thewindow sills – it is easier to open a windowfor ventilation or clean the surfaces if you don’thave to move a whole lot of ornaments).ArtworkPlain bathroom walls can be enhanced withsome framed prints (although I don’t suggestusing any precious art as the moisture willultimately cause damage).FlooringIf the bathroom floor has seen better days(and finances are limited) covering it with alarge cut-to-fit bathroom rug, vinyl tiles or evenpurpose designed paint are some options. P A I NT COL OUR CUE SWant a fashionable colour for your homethis season? Splash your walls with themost popular fashion colour trends. Boldpops of colour and dusty shades arevery much on trend, with an emphasison oranges and yellows, blues and bluereds, black and near black. Think vibrantmagenta pinks too, and a renaissanceinspired palette of azurite, indigo andultramarine (blue palette), malachite, verdigris and earthy green (greenpalette), and luminous lead-tin yellowsand shades of umber.“Bold pops of colour and colour blockingare definitely a trend,” says Resene colourconsultant Rebecca Long. “And it’s a greatway to inject colour into any situation. Colourssuch as Resene Bright Lights (a neon lemonand lime) and Resene Daredevil (a fluorescentorange) will certainly grab your attention.”But we are also seeing soft colours too.“Soft greys are on trend for both theinterior and exterior of your home,” saysRebecca. “Think greys like Resene FoggyGrey, a smart and contemporary grey with asubtle dusty green twist.”Or complement greys with dusty grey-bluesfor modern interior design.10But don’t forget the exterior of yourhouse either.“In one renovation we’re using neutralsin the colour scheme (Resene Silver Chaliceand Resene Quarter Ironside Grey) butwe’re going to paint the front door and thefront windowsills in Resene Irresistible – asmashing hot pink. Colours like that, that areso strong, you just need a touch of it. It doesn’tneed much to draw your attention.”A new trend: GreigeIt’s not grey and it’s not beige – it’s greige, theultimate neutral for top-dressed homes. “Greigeis a mix between grey and beige and it’s perfectfor those who want a grey but with the warmthof beige,” says Rebecca.Think Resene Triple Rakaia, with its salmontint in a stony grey beige tone, or ReseneCloudy, a dusty beige grey that partners wellwith the deep brown Resene Space Shuttle,Resene Santas Grey (a soft lilac-blue pearlgrey) and Resene Jet Stream, a pale almostduck-egg blue-green. If you like the deepertones, try Resene Eighth Oilskin, a greyedbrown dusky taupe. Even in darker tones, greige is warm and inviting, creating a senseof cosiness.“If you like your beiges, then you are goingto be drawn towards the softer, warmer greyslike Resene Friar Grey and Resene Double FriarGrey,” says Debbie.BrightsFeeling blue? One of the biggest colour trends is the blues– rich, deep, and glossy blues, as well as softgreyed- and sea-washed blues.
