March 02,2012FOODPage 2Japanese Ramen, Freak Style!Wri en by MasumiAbout meHi, there. I am Masumi, from Japan. I like allkinds of noodles including some pasta. I alwaysthink about eating the way which is the mostdelicious! I want to share the best way to eatJapanese noodles (soba, udon, ramen). So, Iwrote about Japanese ramen‐do. If you havethe best way of eating your country's noodles, please tell me!Japanese Ramen E que eJapanese CultureDo you know about Japanese culture? I’d like tointroduce below the ar cle from The HiraganaTimes.1. Entering the ramen restaurant, it’s best to sit at the bar.2. To get a good idea of quality please order their basic ramen.3. Don’t drink too much water.4. While wai ng for your ramen, you should watch how they make it.5. When you get your ramen, don’t be in a hurry. First you observe yourramen.6. Taste the soup with a ramen spoon.7. Suck the hot noodles off your chops cks.8. Finally, you should eat everything in the bowl to get the full experience.9. You must finish ea ng everything in about 7‐8minutes, ten minutes.10.A er finishing and paying, leave quickly! My first mistake was to apply Western no onsof what it means to be religious, to the Japa‐nese lifestyle. In the West, we endlessly try toexplain and jus fy our beliefs and spiritualfeelings. For the Japanese, however,“mystery” is an every day fact that should besilently experienced and not be judged by theempty cleverness of cultural commentators. In Japan, I have discovered the integrity ofsilence. Japan has a culture that is righ ullyskep cal of using words to communicate spir‐itual truths.Ramen ea ng is part of this cultural style. It isrepresented by no wasted movements. Eachmovement is significant. You become aware ofyour mind and senses. If you understand thismeaning, you will feel happier and a er ea ngramen. Because understanding the ramen chef’sspirit is same as living his life without conversa‐on. If you can do it, you will be able to under‐stand the Japanese mind.

March 2, 2012POLITICSThe Islamic Republic of Iran.Who Owns the Truth?By Filippo CalabresiEvery day we read thousands of newsstories coming from the Middle East, andthe content of these becomes increasingly worse. The problem’s crucial pointseems to be the Islamic Republic of Iran, which occupies a central role in the Middle East scene. Is the media hyping thedanger, or is there really a risk of facingthe rise of Islamic fundamentalism? For their part, the United States (andconsequently the Western world) accusethe Islamic Republic of Iran of the following things: First of all, Iran’s model ofsociety and State. In Iran, the IslamicRevolution has introduced religion intothe State and politics. Pointed out to pursue, through the igure of the SupremeLeader as Ayatollah, a program for theexpansion of Islamic fundamentalism onthe basis of the Jihad (literally translated:striving in the way of God), a religiouswar with those who are unbelievers in themission of the prophet.Second, the nuclear weapons issue. With President Ahmadinejad, Iran haslaunched its own nuclear program. Thishas caused concern among internationalpolitical observers because of fears thatIran will become a nuclear power andnuclear weapons will be used militarily. Finally, the alleged Iranian desire tobuild and control an Islamic Middle East.To do this, Islamic militant in iltratorswould have to be present in every MiddleEast strategic point, wait to help fellowMuslims to gain power.Page 6fought for the dignity of man as a person, certainly his message was better understood in Islamic countries, where it has aposition of respect and prominence. TheIslamic Republic of Iran has pledged toight the hegemonic powers, to supportthe underprivileged.According to the Iranian ambassador tothe Vatican, their uranium enrichmentprogram is entirely peaceful, and is fundamental for the production of electricity and to provide uranium for powerplants, and aids research in science, medicine and in other ields, for instance inagriculture engineering. For Iran, theprogram is a pressing need. As the highest authorities of the country, SupremeLeader Ali Khamenei Ayatollah said, “theatomic weapons and those of mass destruction have no place in our militarydoctrine.” Moreover, he stressed that theuse and production of nuclear weaponsis illegal from Islamic point of view, so ithas stigmatized this topic.Lastly, from this point of view, the riotsin the Middle East (best known as TheArab Spring) are a result of Western political threats, sanctions, and demonstrations of military superpower. Now, inthese countries, everybody can note anawakening of the people. It is happeningbecause of a growing belief that men andnations themselves must determine theirown destiny and not rely on power orpolitical capital. This awakening is todayin defense of the rights which stem fromthe nature of man. This is seen in bothEurope and the USA. What do the Iranian people in the Western World think about it? Do they agreewith the international media opinions? How they comment what is happening intheir countries of origin? You will ind out in the next InternationalVoices edition, where I will enclose mydiscussion with an Iranian student wholives in New York. Please visit www.ieligazette.tk if youwould like to add a comment or write mean e-mail to discuss further.(fcalabresi@tiscali.it) To this, the Iranians respond: The Ayatollah’s revolution (the 1979 Islamic Revolution), contrary to Western publicopinion, was not fundamentally political. This revolution was social and cultural. In all his speeches he did not speak of theIranian people but of all humanity, ofman's problems. The revolutionaries"All governments must listen to the wishes and aspirationsof their people.”

March 2, 2012TRAVELGREAT IZMIRPage 7Written by Mehmet Sezer“Izmir is a princess with her most beautiful hat on”- Victor HugoIzmir (its former name in Greek is “Smyrna” at the time of theEmpire of Rome) is the 3rd largest city of Turkey after Istanbul, and Ankara (capital). The population of Izmir is 4,500,000. Izmiris a port city because of its geographical location that makes itthe center of fairs and trade. However, Izmir’s residents areseen as lucky by others in Turkey because of paradise beaches, beautiful climate, and night life of the city. Moreover, the people are very polite to each other. They say hi , thank you andthey act very respectful each others. That’s why it was namedone of the premier cities of Turkey by Ataturk, who is lovedvery much by theA view from Bergama (Pergamon) ruinscity’s people andwhose statues are located on all the main streets of the city. The most important thing for city’s residents is soccer. Notall our teams play in the first league of Turkey, There are sixbig teams of Izmir such as Goztepe, Karsiyaka,Altay,Bucaspor, Altinordu, and Izmirspor. When the matches areon between Goztepe and Karsiyaka, life completely stops inthe city makes these matches one of the biggest derbies ofthe world. Then, the film goes back tothe moment they meet on thetrain. The reason why I am introducingthis film is that it has a uniquestyle. You can compare it to sci-fifilms but with most of the emphasis on romance. The basicbackground of the film is definitely about a couple who are sodifferent from each other fallingin love– a romance. This is a pureromantic movie from the beginning although it does not haveextravagant sets– a more realisticapartment, street and people. However, the way that this movie presents relationships and dealswith them is very complex andsophisticated.MY FAVORITE PARTS1. Great actor and actressBright acting by Jim Carrey beside his expertise ,comedy2. The way of erasingmemory that film describes is amazing.3. Huge compliment fromcritics ( you know howhard it is to satisfy them)4. The cinematography isunique and beautiful.
