MANAGER’S GUIDE TOAPPRENTICESHIPSManaging an apprentice andunderstanding the design of theprogramme for each individualapprentice can be challenging. Thisoverview will clarify the basics ofapprenticeships and specify the roleand responsibility of the managerCompass Group Apprenticeshipsare inspiring the next generation offantastic talent into our sectors andat the same time they are elevatingthe structured career developmentalopportunities on offer to our currentand talented Compass Groupcolleagues:WHAT IS ANAPPRENTICESHIP?WHY AN APPRENTICESHIP?An apprenticeship is defined as a job with structureddevelopment aligned to an apprenticeship standard. An apprenticeship consists of three core elements: Paid job – provided by an employer Off-the-job training – supported by our deliverypartners English and maths – this applies to apprenticesthat don’t hold a recognised qualification in thesesubjects at the required level.4 I COMPASS GROUP APPRENTICESHIPS PROSPECTUSThey offer a genuine alternative to academic studyand help individuals develop the skills, knowledge andbehaviours they need to demonstrate competence ina specific occupational area. Compass Group tailorour apprenticeships to the exact needs of the individualand business and specific department. Apprenticeshipsare proven to improve employee retention andprovide excellent progression opportunities to existingemployees.WHO CAN BE AN APPRENTICE?Apprentices can be new or current Compass Groupcolleagues. Have you considered turning your currentvacancies into ‘apprenticeship vacancies?’HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?Most of our brilliant apprenticeships usually last 12-13months, however the higher the apprenticeship level, the longer the apprenticeship duration will be. Forexample some level 3 and 4 qualifications can last upto 15-18 months while a level 5 qualification could lastbetween 18 and 24 months.HOW DOES IT WORK?How the skills, knowledge and behaviours are delivereddepends upon the apprenticeship programme thathas been selected. A number of our apprenticeshipssuch as Business Administration, Customer Serviceand Retail are delivered on-site by one of our deliverypartners. However, some apprenticeships require theapprentice to attend workshops or masterclasseswhich are embedded into the curriculum and spreadacross the programme. These are qualifications suchas Commis Chef, Chef De Partie and Managementapprenticeships.WHO PAYS THE TRAVEL ANDEXPENSE COSTS?Should your apprentice need to attend a workshop ormasterclass off site, the unit cost centre will need tocover the costs of the travel expenses. The dates andvenues of all workshops will be confirmed with you atthe start of the programme. The location will be withinan acceptable distance for the apprentice.

Compass Group work closely with all of our preferreddelivery partners to design apprenticeship deliverymodels that fit with our organisation’s people, purposeand performance objectives. We also work closely withour delivery partners to ensure that the developmentneeds of our employees are at the heart of high qualityapprenticeship programmes. All of our delivery models include monthly training, 1-1sessions and/or progress reviews and at the beginningof all apprenticeship journeys our delivery partners willensure that the induction process is fully inclusive so thatapprentices and their Line Managers have a full picture ofthe apprenticeship journey ahead. If you are the Line Manager of an apprentice, you shouldexpect to be fully involved in the 1-1 and progress reviewactivity which the delivery partner conducts with yourapprentice. As the Line Manager, it is essential that youhave a full and accurate understanding of the progressthat your apprentice is making with their qualification rightthe way through until your apprentice reaches their endpoint assessment. Before an apprentice can be enteredinto the ‘EPA Gateway’, you will need to be confident thatthe apprentice is ready for their EPA, especially as you willneed to sign off this aspect of the apprenticeship journeywith the delivery partner. Your involvement in the previous1-1 and progress reviews will help to inform you of yourapprentice’s progress. Mathematics and English functional skills are embeddedin the delivery of the standards, as are topics includingSafeguarding, British Values, Prevent, Social and Ethicalissues, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Health andWellbeing. All Compass Group employees should expect ourapprenticeships to deliver high quality teaching andlearning experiences, that ensure contextualised learningresults in apprentices getting the most from theirapprenticeship.10 I COMPASS GROUP APPRENTICESHIPS PROSPECTUSTHE STANDARDSBESPOKE TO YOUR ORGANISATION

OFF-THE-JOBTRAININGOff-the-job traning: steps to help you determine whether an activity counts as off-the-job training;Key Facts1. Off-the-job training must make up at least 20%of the apprentice’s contracted hours, over thetotal duration of the apprentice’s planned trainingperiod.THIS COUNTS ASTRAINING?2. Off-the-job training can be delivered flexibly, forexample as part of each day, one day per week, one week out of five or as a block release.3. Off-the-job training can be delivered in theapprentice’s normal workplace or at an externallocation.4. Progress reviews and on-programme assessmentsdo not towards 20% off-the-job training, as they donot deliver new knowledge, skills and behaviours.5. If needed, English and maths training must be ontop of the 20% off-the-job training requirements.Tip: “All apprentices need to remember is “keep a recordof it’. Any activity that fulfils the above criteria simplyneeds to be recorded each time and very quickly the20% requirement will be achieved.”14 I COMPASS GROUP APPRENTICESHIPS PROSPECTUS6. Compass apprenticeships which include workshopsand masterclasses already contribute to 20%requirements.
