I hope everyone’s summer was super. This year’sshow seasons for both Games Division and Horse Show weredifferent for sure. Games Division, with the help of some privatearena hosts, was able to sustain an almost normal season andhold a State Finals at the end of August but our Games riders onthe West Side were unable to hold any shows. Horse Show hashad a harder year as they weren’t able to get much going withmost fairgrounds and arenas closed. Even our Trails and PleasureDivision was impacted with the closure of many trails around theState. COVID-19 has definitely taken a toll on everyone including Washington State Horsemen. I am so grateful for our division directors for the time and guidance they have put into thistough season. Thank you to Lisa Gardner (Horse Show), MelissaStockman (Games), and Willie Hansen (Trails and Pleasure).,Due to COVID-19 and the phase restrictions in place, even Convention is having to take a different look in 2020. We are goingVIRTUAL for the first time in 79 years. Definitely not how wewould prefer to meet but with this year being virtual, we hopethat many around the State will join us for Convention from thecomfort of their own homes. I know some of you may be thinking, “How is this going to work?” Well, that is where our Divisions and our Convention Chair, Jessie McLaughlin, have comeinto play. We will be hosting meetings and awarding some of ourspecial awards online using ZOOM. Be looking for more information on our Facebook and elsewhere in this issue of Canter! It’s going to be a fun new virtual experience!Prior to Convention, we have our 3rd Quarter WSH Board Meeting scheduled for Saturday, October 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the Kittitas Valley Event Center in the Armory Building. This is NOT thebuilding we normally meet in. This building hosts the Fairgrounds Office and is closer to the public swimming pool. Allmembers are welcome to attend. Attendees will need to bringtheir own lunch. We will be encouraging social distancing duringthe meeting. Board Members.watch for an upcoming e-mail.I am hoping for a full season for all of our divisions in 2021.as Iknow all of you are. Is everyone else tired of this strange JumanjiGame we seem to be a part of in 2020? I know I am. On a positive note we have a great convention to look forward to nextmonth and shows will be here before you know it in 2021. Continue to have hope and as they say.this too shall pass! Until weare able to meet in person again (either at a meeting or at ashow) stay healthy, stay safe, and treasure those around you.509.629.1354 / ShaneLaib@hotmail.comHappy Trails - - Emma McLaughlinDirector 10 (Z1) - Bonnie Schuchman (12/31/20)#wshlifestyle #goingvirtual #virtualwshconventionPlease feel free to reach out to any of the Executive BoardMembers listed above with any questions. We are here to serve you!The Canter or e-Canter are published in January, April, July, andOctober each year. Page 4 - WSH Canter / October 2020YOUTH MERITA Free Program for WSH Members 17 and UnderThis year has definitely been one for the books! In a year in which any wereasked to stay home to attend school, we thought that we would have points andworkbooks booming out our ears. Unfortunately, that was not the case whichleads us to believe that either our youth members are not aware of this amazingprogram or we don’t have any youth members in WSH. We know that the latteris NOT the case so we need to do a better job of spreading the word. The YouthMerit program is easy and FREE! Youth members (ages 17 and under as ofAugust 1, 2020), are invited to visit the WSH website at WashingtonStateHorsemen.org, click on Youth Merit, download / complete / return an application thendownload / complete Workbook 2 to earn awards! The types of awards that youcan earn are listed below and again.they are FREE! Join now and we wouldlove to see you a part of this program for this coming year so that we can celebrate your accomplishments at next year’s Convention. Additionally, just because your Zone may not have a designated person assigned as a Youth MeritAdvisor, you can still participate! Many youth across the State in the past haveworked at their own pace on the workbooks, turning them in to the East or WestYouth Merit Chair (depending on their location) by August 1 and earned awards. There just isn’t a reason all members 17 and under aren’t participating in thisprogram.remember - it’s FREE!Participation Plaque (50 Points)Yellow Tag / Certificate of Merit (100 Points)Red Tag / Certificate of Excellence (200 Points)Blue Tag / T-Shirt / Honor of Excellence (300 Points)Bronze Medallion (500 Points)Superior Jacket (650 Points)Silver Medallion (800 Points)Supreme Buckle (1,000 Points)Gold Medallion (1,200 pts) 50 / 75 / 100 Cash Awards (1,400 points)Thank you to the 2020 Youth Merit Zone Advisors: Sue Dillman (North Central),Cheryl Beck (Northeast), and Cheryl Hayward (Prairie). Thank you for yourcontinued commitment to our youth! If you are interested in serving as an Advisor for your Zone, please contact Jessie McLaughlin at LDSMacs@comcast.netusing the subject line “Youth Merit”.I didn’t receive any proposals for review at this year’s Annual Convention. Therefore, we are going to be using our dedicated “Virtual Convention” time on Sunday, November 15, at 10:00 a.m. to share our award winners, listen to ourspeeches, and provide information to our members on how the Youth Merit Program works and what it takes to be involved. This will be a Zoom meeting inwhich you’ll need to register early for (see more information on the Conventionpage). Please bring your questions and we will be happy to find the answer(s) foryou until the completion of our time slot (10:45). FYI, this year’s speakers will bedelivering speeches on the topic, “Horse Breeds of Foreign Origin”. If you havemade your way to the cash award levels (1400 points), be sure to get with JessieMcLaughlin to let her know what horse breed you’ve selected. Even if you aren’ta Youth Merit Member, please feel free to join us for this meeting as the speeches have been really informative in the past and it’s great to see what the youth ofour organization are accomplishing each year .Youth Merit Financials201220122012Balance Carried Forward from 2011 - 2,100.82Income / Donations - 530.00Expenses - 1619.71*2013201320132013Balance Carried Forward from 2012 - 1011.11Income / Donations - 1,315.00Income / Convention Proceeds - 1,599.25Expenses – 1,498.232014201420142014Balance Carried Forward from 2013 - 2,427.13Income / Donations - 390.04Income / Convention Proceeds - 1,321.00Expenses – 1,507.652015201520152015Balance Carried Forward from 2014 - 2,630.52Income / Donations - 50.00Income / Convention Proceeds - 573.00Expenses – 1,008.4320162016201620162016Balance Carried Forward from 2015 - 2,245.09Income / Donations - 252.00Income / Convention Proceeds - 1,263.00Expenses (Paid in 2016) – 183.07Expenses (Paid in 2017) – 408.62201720172017Balance Carried Forward from 2016 - 3,168.40Income / Convention Proceeds - 170.00Expenses – 577.23201820182018Balance Carried Forward from 2017 - 2,761.17Income / Convention Proceeds - 696.00Expenses – 671.48201920192019Balance Carried Forward from 2018 - 2,785.69Income / Convention Auction Proceeds - 920.00Expenses – 241.28 ( 50 cash award still IOU)202020202020Balance Carried Forward from 2019 - 3,464.41Income / Donations as of 10/01/20 - 0.00Expenses as of 10/01/20 – 0.00 (ordering awards)Current Balance - 3,464.41*Payment of 2010 and 2011 scholarships were made in 2012 to past recipients due to the changemade in purchasing savings bonds.Don’t forget that if you won a perpetual trophy in 2019, that you’ll need to contacteither Cheryl Hayward (West Side) or Jessie McLaughlin (East Side) to determinewhat the next step is in the trophy’s progression.
