09/28/2021 TUESDAY TEAM TALKCOVID UPDATECOVID Booster DosesThe Pfizer vaccine was authorized for booster doses. This is effective immediately. To find a vaccine, please visit vaccines.gov.The Pfizer booster can be administered 6 months after the second dose. At this time, combining pharmaceuticals is NOTrecommended, i.e. if you received two Moderna vaccines or one J&J vaccine, you should not receive the Pfizer booster. Those who qualify for the booster include: Adults who are 65 Adults who reside in a long-term care facility regardless of age Adults over 50 with underlying medical conditions Adults 18 with underlying medical conditions based on individual risk Adults 18 who are at an increased exposure to COVID due to employment This includes healthcare workers, jail staff, daycare staff, school staff, grocery workersAdditionally, a distinction was made between additional doses and booster doses. A booster refers to a dose given to those who had built enough protection after the first two doses, but protection haswaned over time. An additional dose is for someone who didn’t get enough protection after the first two doses, such as the severelyimmunocompromised.Information regarding booster doses for Moderna and J&J are being researched.NCH HEALTHCARE SYSTEM Helping everyone live a longer, happier, and healthier life.

09/28/2021 TUESDAY TEAM TALKQUALITYEveryone Deserves Safe, Reliable, and Consistent Person-CenteredHealthcare.September is Sepsis Awareness Month. In recent years, Sepsis has become somewhat of a buzzword in healthcare. It may seem as though every patient being admittedthrough the Emergency Department has been diagnosed with Sepsis. The frequent use of this word has made it difficult todetermine if there is true cause for concern.Sepsis and Septic Shock are very concerning diagnoses, both in terms of potential negative patient outcomes and in terms oftheir effects on the healthcare system overall. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Sepsisaffects nearly 1.7 million American adults every year and contributes to the death of more than 250,000 of these individuals.Additionally, according to the Sepsis Alliance, Sepsis is the number 1 cost of hospitalizations in the U.S., with estimates that itincurs costs of around 62 billion annually. It is also the number 1 cause of readmission to the hospital, creating additional costsof around 3.5 billion per year.Sepsis is the body’s heightened and overwhelming response to an infection – a life-threatening response because of its potentialto cause tissue damage, organ failure, and death. It needs urgent recognition and treatment due to its quick progression andoften insidious onset. While there are many risk factors for Sepsis, there is no specific test to determine if a patient has sepsis. Its diagnosis is based on the evaluation of many diagnostic tests and symptoms which vary from patient to patient.Awareness of this condition is critical to the health and safety of all patients – from neonates in NICU to older adults in ICU andevery patient and every acuity level in between. If you suspect a patient in your care of having sepsis, remember to evaluate according to the pneumonic“TIME:”T – Temperature (Higher or lower than the patient’s baseline)I – Infection (Signs and symptoms of infection)M – Mental Decline (The patient may experience confusion or lethargy, or be difficult to rouse)E – Extremely Ill (Patients can experience severe pain, shortness of breath, and flu-like symptoms)If you are concerned that your patient has Sepsis, speak up! Time is of the essence – some statistics show that delayinginterventions can raise the patient’s risk of mortality by around 8% per hour. Advocating for your patient’s well-being allowstheir treatment to begin earlier, increasing their chances of surviving Sepsis.NCH HEALTHCARE SYSTEM Helping everyone live a longer, happier, and healthier life.

09/28/2021 TUESDAY TEAM TALKQUALITYRegulatory ReadinessMedication Safe Practices-SecurityAll medications distinguished by “RX Only” must always be kept secure.Medications left on COWs, WOWs, or bedside tables are not acceptable.
