13BRIGHTON SPEED TRIALS1962The 57th Brighton Speed Trials has an entry of 247.Sydney Allard has again entered his Allard Dragster with the5.7 litre Chrysler V8 superchargedengine. Last year he hadtrouble and the car was unable to prove its true potential. This isthe fastest Sprint car in the British Isles and certainly the noisiest.Sydney Allard informs us that he has clocked 19.5 sees. for theStanding Kilometre in practice and although he doubts if he canachieve this time at Brighton, it would seem that the Car CourseRecord of 23.21 sees. will be broken if Sydney has a trouble freerun. Another Dragster entry is Chris Summers driving the 4670 c.c.Cooper-Chevrolet.In Class 17, for the first time we have a B.R.M. (2500 c.c.)running at Brighton Speed Trials, with the well known driver TonyMarsh at the wheel. Then in Class 16 there is a J.B.W. Maseratidriven by Jack Cardingley and the Cooper Intercontinental enteredby Ecurie Cooper/Climax of S1. Helier, Jersey. Driver Arthur Owen.Miss Patsy Burt, well known at this event, is driving a CooperIntercontinentaland Gorden Parker, a H.K. Jaguar.C. E. Naylor has entered his F.I.A.T . orginally driven byNazzaro in 1907. Rebuilt in 1922 and fitted with the present21714 c.c. engine, although the original gearbox is still used. In1924 this car held the Worlds' Land Speed Record driven by E. A.D. Eldridge and was the last car to obtain the record on a publicroad. Two other interesting "old timers" in this Class are the 1925Sunbeam V12, 3996 c.c., driven by Jack Smith and the 1922 Delage,5107 c.c., driven by N. Arnold Forster.Car Class Records broken at the 1961 Meeting.Sports Carsup to 2000 c.c.-H. Hamblin, TR3A, 31.24 sees, 4-Seater Saloonsup to 1600 c.c.-G.R. Hartwell, Sunbeam Rapier, 35.51 sees.Sports Cars 1001 to 1600 c.c.-D.Wilkinson, Lola, 27.58 sees.Sports Cars 1601 to 2500c.c.-J.Randles, Cooper, 24.91 sees.New Classes introduced for the first time this year are Class 3,Saloon Cars 160 I to 4000 c.c., Class 10-Sports Racing Cars up to1600 c.c. and Class II-SportsRacing Cars 1601 c.c. and over. These have all been well supported.Continued on Page 34
