PROJECT SUCCESS STORIESRefinery Pre-Filtration SolutionA large Texas based refinery with two coking units was experiencing major issues with a high temperaturegas oil backwash feed filter system in the Hydrocracking unit. Due to higher usage of opportunity crudes, the backwash filter system needed constant maintenance, a challenge that many refineries face.To optimize the filtration solution, the team designed a pre-filter that was installed upstream of thebackwash feed filter system. The team then developed a custom HIGH TEMPERATURE HIGH FLOWCARTRIDGE FILTER that could reliably remove contaminants at 425 F.In less than three months, the frequency of filter element cleaning had been eliminated, savingapproximately 2 million per year in filter maintenance expense. The project also reduced thenumber of catalyst changes between turnarounds, equating to an estimate of greater than 50 millionsavings over the six-year cycle.DOWNLOADNGL Sweetening in FractionationIn NGL processing, controlling acid content is an essential step in producing on-spec product. Aminetreatment of NGL fluids is one of the most challenging and costly parts of the process. Traditionally, this is accomplished using large contactor column with significant residence time requirements andvelocity limits. One concern with the large vertical contact towers or traditional coalescers is the lossof production time during turnaround and upsets. Human access is required to maintain the internalsor change the cartridges. Typically, extra lifting equipment is needed to provide access to the tightly, confined space. Downtime for this operation can cost up to 2 million per day.Using decades of cumulative experience in design and NGL Sweetening process expertise, engineersat Jonell Systems were successful at developing a compact contactor system which offers significantadvantages over the large vertical contactors even with low surface tension amine-laden liquids.DOWNLOADThe innovative design includes a Quick Opening Closure (QOC) and effectively reduces the changeout process from several days to several hours. The cost savings in operational downtime has provento be a groundbreaking improvement and allowed customers to maintain uptime that is far above theindustry average.Refinery in the Czech Republic installed ProGuardThe refinery had a high flow cartridge filter system installed on its gas oil hydrocracker to removecontaminants. However, due to the content of coke, asphaltenes and polymers in the vacuum gasoil, the disposable 25 micron filter cartridges needed to be replaced frequently, which exceeded thecompany’s budget for cartridges. After installation, ProGuard FR backflushing filters performed with repeated run times of more than2.5 hours between backflushes and only 2 m³ of backflush fluid consumption. This easily meets therefinery’s process requirements.Reducing operating costs and minimizing downtime is essential to optimizing business performance. With the ProGuard FR backflushing filter system, the refinery is now able to operate within a loweroperations and maintenance budget, while continuing to protect the catalyst reactors downstream ofthe filter system.14 Filtration Group - Process Technologies tiongroup.com
