The EPA has begun an investigation to determine the extent ofcontamination caused by these sources. Children younger than seven years old are the mostvulnerable to lead poisoning. Child care centers were chosen to be part of the initialinvestigation because they are areas where large number of children under seven often playoutdoors.Your child care facility was included in the EPA's investigation because it is locatedwithin an area that may have been influenced by sources located near the intersection of 1-480and Abbott Drive. If you choose to sign the enclosed access agreement and mail it back in theenclosed envelope, the EPA representatives will visit your property at a later date to collectsamples of soil from your yard.The entire sampling process takes about one hour to complete. A total of about two cupsof soil will be collected from various locations around your yard and tested for contamination bylead and other metals. The results will be mailed to you after a quality control analysis has beenperformed. In addition, data from your property will be used to develop a map of the Omahametropolitan area (including Council Bluffs) showing locations where high lead concentrationshave been found. This map will be used as a tool to identify any trends that may point to partiesresponsible for the contamination. It will also be used to inform the public about the progress ofthe investigation.The EPA will not close your business regardless of the results of the soil testing. Lfsignificant lead contamination is found at a child care facility, the EPA may offer the owner anopportunity to have contaminated soil removed and replaced with uncontaminated soil. Although participation in the soil investigation is voluntary, information gained bytesting your soil for metals contamination could be useful as you make future decisions about theuse of your property.
