I hope that you had an enjoyable summer. We have an exciting yearahead of us, just as it should be at Purdue. On October 5, the department will hosta fall reception for all undergraduate and graduate students and faculty. It will beheld in the Anniversary Room of the Purdue Memorial Union.I invite you to attend, renew acquaintances, visit with friends andfaculty, and enjoy the food. (page 3)On October 25 Jean-Pierre Dormois, Professor of History at MarcBloch Université in Strasbourg, will present the annual lecture forthe Purdue History Forum. Professor Dormois will speak on“The Americanization of French Society.” (page 4)Phi Alpha Theta and the History Organization have busyagendas. I urge you to join both. Phi Alpha Theta will againpublish its student edited, peer-reviewed journal, The PurdueHistorian: An Undergraduate History Journal. For submission ofmanuscripts contact Phi Alpha Theta President, Brittney Smith,smith586@purdue.edu.The department will hire two assistant professors this year. Their areas ofspecialization will be Latino/a history and American Legal Culture with the ability toteach U.S. constitutional history. I will be able to tell you the results of the search inour spring newsletter. Both positions will enable thedepartment to strengthen its undergraduatecurriculum.Work hard and enjoy the year. Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship, College of EducationWebsite on Constitution Day Events: http://www.purdue.edu/constitution-day/Thirty-nine of the 55 Delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the UnitedStates Constitution on September 17, 1787. The Congress, by joint resolution, hasdesignated September 17th as “Citizenship Day” and the week beginning September17th and ending September 23rd of each year as “Constitution Week”. Public Law108-477 contained in the recent Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005 states that“each educational institution that receives Federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold aneducational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of such yearfor the students served by the educational institution.”INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS — HISTORYTravel internationally to study History.
