FEATUREINTERVIEWfrom tarotto tranceHOW TO BE AN EVIDENTIAL MEDIUMJOHN HOLLAND, one of the world’s top exponents ofspirit communication, reveals the secrets of his mediumisticdevelopmentGROWING up on the streets of Boston,Massachusetts, one of five children from aworking class Irish-Italian Catholic family,John Holland realised he was different.“I used to see spirit people in mybedroom when I was young,” he explains,“and I knew what was going to happen orwhat people would say before they said it.I thought at that time that everyone coulddo that.” When he realised this was not thecase, John did his best to hide his psychicability. It took an automobile accident at the ageof 30, in the early 1990s, to change his lifecompletely. Though he was not seriouslyinjured, the trauma of the crash hadsuddenly intensified his psychic ability.“It was instantaneous. It was so fast. AndI felt an energy surging straight through me.My psychic abilities seemed to become 100times stronger.”John, who was living in Los Angeles,California, decided to embark on a psychiccareer. He was prepared to give up his job ata hotel, but first he needed to start using hisabilities and developing them to help peoplein some way. He did so by giving tarotreadings in an aromatherapy shop.“I never really read the deck – I believethe images, colours and words on themare wonderful teaching tools to access anddevelop your intuitive abilities. I wasn’tgoing by what the book said, but imageswould pop into my mind that pertained tothe client in front of me.”After two years of doing part-time tarotreadings, something strange and totallyunexpected happened.“I’d be giving someone a reading abouttheir career and in would come their UncleJoe or their Aunt Charlotte, and I said,‘What’s happening? What’s this all about?’I quickly realised I needed to understandwhat was happening.”John started reading books about spiritcommunication avidly and, in particular, accounts by and about well-knownmediums, healers and spirit guides, such asEna Twigg, Estelle Roberts, Harry Edwardsand Silver Birch.“I was particularly interested in their lifestories: how these people developed andlived with their abilities and managed them.I needed to understand what was involved ifI was going to follow in their footsteps.”TEST CONDITIONSA decade later, John Holland had joinedthe ranks of America’s top mediums, confidently filling large halls with his publicdemonstrations, bringing comfort to thebereaved and appearing on prime time TVshows about psychic powers. He is so sureof his ability to communicate with the spiritworld or to tune into past events psychicallythat he even agreed to work under stricttest conditions for TV documentaries.Viewers of Mediums: We See Dead Peoplewhich was broadcast in 2005 on A&EBiography channel, saw John in a New Yorktaxi being taken to an unknown destination.Although not familiar with the city, he wasblindfolded throughout the journey and atthe start of the experiment.Escorted into a nondescript building, hewas taken up in a lift to the ninth floor. Oncethe blindfold was removed John walkedaround, followed by a film crew, as hedescribed the feelings he was getting. As he approached a stairwell he spokeof “feeling female” and then went on to saythere had been a fire which he thought, judging by the clothes the women werewearing, would have been in the 1910s or1920s. “I feel they can’t get out,” he added.PSYCHIC NEWS SEPTEMBER 201519

INTERVIEW“It’s like a giant fireballand the heat isoverwhelming. I feeltrapped. There’s noway out.”He was then taken to the ninth floor wherethe feelings became even more intense.“It’s like a giant fireball and the heat isoverwhelming,” he said, trying to controlhis emotions, adding that he could hear thewomen’s screams as they attempted to fleethe inferno.“I feel trapped. There’s no way out. I feelthe tightness of how many people they musthave put in this area. A lot more people thanthis place should have held. I was hearingsewing machines. Hard-working women.Textiles. Factory. They’re all lined up. It’s hotanyway, before the fire. It must have been asweat shop. I felt I wanted to go out of thewindows. It was overwhelming.”The documentary’s voice-oversaid John’s psychic impressions were“extraordinarily accurate” as was hisobservation: “This would have been bighistory when it happened.” John Hollandhad been taken to a building in New York’sGreenwich Village that once housed theTriangle Shirtwaist Factory which madeladies’ blouses. On 25 March, 1911, firebroke out on the eighth floor and quicklyspread to the three floors above. Some escape routes and exits werelocked and the final death toll was 146garment workers of whom 123 were youngItalian or Jewish women, most underthe age of 22. Of those who perished, 69either jumped or fell to their deaths fromthe burning building, which today is a20PSYCHIC NEWS SEPTEMBER 2015National Historic Landmark and part ofNew York University. For the next 90 years,it remained New York’s worst workplacedisaster until the events of 9/11.The same degree of accuracy wasdisplayed when John was filmed by theChronicle newsmagazine TV series, firstduring a public demonstration and thengiving spirit messages to individuals, one ofwhom was a Channel 5 employee, in privatesittings. The impressive results, togetherwith the documentary on the Triangle firedisaster, can be viewed on YouTube.com:see links in panel.HEADED FOR BRITAINSo how did a part-time Los Angeles tarotreader develop and hone his skills to thelevel seen in these TV films and in his publicand private demonstrations? The answer, surprisingly, is that he leftthe United States and headed for Britain. Why?“What struck me, when I devoured thosebooks on spirit communication and leadingmediums, was that they were all from theUK. And I said to myself, ‘If I could only go toEngland and study with these people howgreat would that be?’“Well, two weeks after that I stepped onsomeone’s foot at a party and we chattedand I discovered he was from England.Although not a Spiritualist he knew aboutSpiritualist churches. He lived in Bristol andtold me there were 10 churches in the area.I was amazed.“His name is Simon Steel and we got toknow each other, and he invited me over toEngland.”It was a tempting offer but not one thatseemed likely to materialise since John hada job and a rented apartment in Los Angeles. When his job suddenly came to an end avisit to the UK became more achievable, but he didn’t want to lose his apartment. However, a solution soon presented itself.“An American friend of mine called meand said, ‘I’d love to come to California andstudy writing. I know you want to go toEngland. How about if you were to go toEngland, I’d pay your rent and live at yourplace while you’re gone?’”Everything had effortlessly fallen intoplace to enable John to realise his ambition.“Doors had opened. I’m a big advocate ofsynchronicity. If Spirit want you to go in thatdirection they’ll make it happen.”He had never been to the UK before but, even though he loved its history and thearchitecture, sightseeing was not high onJohn’s agenda. “I was there to develop andunderstand my mediumship,” he emphasises.Staying with Simon in Bristol enabledhim to get to know the local churches.“Being an American, I sort of stood out alittle. But wherever I went they welcomedme in and gave me wonderful help and

INTERVIEWadvice. And one person ledto another.“Early on I was introducedto Joan Lambert, a Welshmedium, so I went to Walesto have a private readingwith her. She then madecontact with MargaretStanley, president ofMelksham SpiritualistChurch in Devizes, Wiltshire, telling her, ‘This young manhas something special. Let’shelp him.’ Margaret then introduced me toMarian Bishop at Westbury Park SpiritualistChurch, in Bristol, where I was interviewedand, after an assessment of my mediumship, invited to join their development circle.”Lambert, Stanley and Bishop are thethree mediums he credits with training himand he says he was blessed that they cameinto his life when they did.“Margaret Stanley was a forwardthinking president. She would take studentsinto castles or manors with a pen and paperand say, ‘Tell me what you’re getting’.“I would pick up if there had beensignificant events, or something aboutthe people who had lived there. Thatgave me the training to do a ‘LocationReading’, which was why I was able pick upimpressions about the Triangle fire in NewYork many years later.“So that’s where I was for two straightyears: every Tuesday night, at 6pm, in aBristol development circle. They taught mediscipline: if Spirit’s going to be there foryou, you must be there for Spirit. If someonewas late, they’d just lock the door.“That’s where I got a lot of my training.I sat in circle, in meditation, with a properleader – she would see when the spiritguides would come in and she wouldinstruct me. I don’t think I ever missed ameeting.”It wasn’t long before John heard aboutthe Arthur Findlay College and the variouscourses conducted at Stansted Hall, Essex. He attended two programmes there withtutors such as Simone King, Jean Bassett,Brenda Lawrence and Glyn Edwards.“That was another place that taught mediscipline,” John observes,“because they really workyou and that’s exactly whatI needed. They taught mewhat it really meant tolink with Spirit: how to doit in front of people, whatcolours mean, your aura. The Bristol circle waswonderful for practice; itwas Stansted that gave methe real fundamentals ofevidential mediumship.”Because of time limitations for visitorsto the UK, John was required to return tothe USA every six months to renew his visa.Such was his enthusiasm and dedication todeveloping his mediumship that he renewedhis visa four times during his stay of a littleover two years. “All my mediumship traininghappened in the UK,” he emphasises. He also got to see many British mediumsworking, including psychic artist CoralPolge, who drew his Tibetan spirit guide. The most memorable experience, however, was a transfiguration séance with a malemedium whose name John can no longerrecall. This is a form of physical mediumship, held in a red light, when ectoplasm formsover the medium’s face so that the spiritentity can be recognised.A young man’s face appeared and hecalled for “John”. Reluctant to respond atfirst, John eventually said, “My name isJohn” to which the spirit replied, “It’s me,Michael. Please tell my family I didn’t meanto do it.”“Oh my God,” was all that John couldutter in response.“Little did anyone know that two weeksbefore I went to this event the brother of afriend of mine overdosed, and they nevercould tell if it was a suicide or an accident.I called the family and I told them, becausethey knew I was into this. They said theywere not surprised because since he hadpassed away he had already appeared toother people in their dreams. That’s anexperience I’ll never forget.”John was also introduced to theSpiritualist Association of Great Britain, which was then in London’s BelgraveA recent development circle at Westbury Park Spiritualist Church, Bristol.Square. “I was in my element. I can’t tell youhow excited I was. I went to a ChristmasCavalcade and there were Gordon Smithand Tony Stockwell, who were then youngmen in their 20s and are now Britain’s topevidential mediums.” Both have since playedimportant roles in his life.He first saw Gordon demonstrating atMelksham Spiritualist Church. “Gordon waskind enough to take me under his wing as amentor. He took me to Scotland and I stayedwith him. He took me to the churches andhe even threw me out on the stage, as astudent. I was so nervous, but he said, withthat beautiful Scottish accent, ‘Come onJohn, don’t be nervous, you’re not here tobe judged.’ I learned a lot from him.”John also knew of Tony Stockwell’smediumistic abilities – “he was always onmy radar” he explains – but it was not untilTony started demonstrating in Americathat John got to know him. They bothparticipated in an international conferenceon mediumship at Omega, New York, sincewhen they have stayed in touch. “Everymedium needs a friend: we always needanother medium to talk to.”LONDON DEMONSTRATIONEarly next month, John and Tony willbe sharing a platform in London for an“Enlightening Evening of Mediumship”at the Royal Geographical Society inKensington (Friday, 2 October). It alsopromises to be educational, entertainingand, above all, evidential – a must-seeevent for all budding mediums. They willalso be working together at the College ofPsychic Studies on a “Raising the Standards”mediumship weekend (Saturday andSunday, 3-4 October).A similar format was used in August atan event in Pompton Plains, New Jersey, organised by The Journey Within – thefirst American church affiliated to theSpiritualists’ National Union. John and itspastor, Janet Nohavec, shared the platformfor “Where Two Worlds Meet”, an eveningof spirit communication open to the public. On the following two days they ran a courseon platform mediumship. As for the future, John – who hasalready authored four books with a fifthin preparation – expects to be devotingeven more time to training and educatingtomorrow’s mediums. That’s not to say he’s learned everythingthere is to learn.“I’m now sitting for trance developmentwith Tony Stockwell,” he confides. “I’m excited about that and I think I’mready for it.”PSYCHIC NEWS SEPTEMBER 201521
