Some of us ‘Nam vets got a chance to see themoving wall at Widener University. It was a movingexperience. Bingo is still going strong at the CoatesvilleVAMC. Both the color guard and honor guard took part inthe Armed Forces/Military Appreciation Day. The funeraldetail is around 120 ceremonies so far this year. I can’tsay enough about dedication. By the time this goes intoprint, we will have had the Beverly Hills Middle SchoolMemorial Ceremony, the flag placing on the graves, graveside ceremonies at Arlington cemetery, capped offwith our joint Memorial Day ceremonies with our brothersfrom the VFW 7390 and the AL 805. I would like to see agreat turnout. If you do not have a uniform yet, don’t letthat hold you back. The JA, paymaster, Jr. Past Dept.Commandant, and I attended the SE Div. Meeting inUpland. I must take my hat off to them, what a beautifulhome, and hospitality. Much was discussed. The Dept.Commandant was in attendance and had a lot to tell us.We discussed ways our ritual should be changed forassociate members. I want to take this time to say to ourSE Div. Commandant Bob Rup a fond farewell. He did awonderful job in his position.Photos, ReminderScuttlebutt Boosters, Birthdays, Young MarinesMinutesGod Bless & Semper Fi,

For a variety of reasons, it is notreasonable to expect those members who havebeen primarily responsible in the past for oursales results to continue to do so at their samedegree of participation! Any member who can give upan occasional Saturday Morning or Afternoon in orderto help with our Wagon Sales, please contact me at610-356-8893.Finally, we will request assistance from the YoungMarine Detachment leadership as we progressthrough our Wagon Sale Schedule. Our YoungMarines were of great assistance to us last year!Respectfully submitted,Jr. Vice Commandant. '()" # Marine Corps members, I think we really are going tohave a summer. Memorial Day weekend looks to bevery promising, lest we forget our fallen veterans whotruly deserve our thoughts and prayers over theweekend.thI am looking forward to our annual dinner on June 4 ,and also pleased that we will be bringing in a newmember, a highly decorated Marine serving in theVietnam era. J. R. or Jim Robinson holds his fullPGA Class A card, and also is a retired successfulinsurance agent. The dinner is set to have nearly100 and our catering will be done once again by thesame folks that did such a wonderful job last year.I’d like to propose a motion that we adopt thefollowing prize options for the member with the mostnew members brought into the fold: 1) 100.00 for agift certificate to your favorite restaurant. 2) Yourdues for three years paid for. 3) 100.00 toward ourlocker box offerings. I will be asking for a second toththis motion at the meeting on June 4 .Remember, that if one has a seat selectionpreference for the Ball on Nov. 10th, you need tocontact Bill Nolan. Our annual picnic is movingforward for August, so keep your calendars open fora great day of fun with our fellow veterans from theLegion and VFW.Look forward to seeing you all, and bring your partyface for a great time at the annual dinner.Semper Fi,Sr. Vice Commandant

Commandant’s MessageJune 2007I can’t say enough on how pleased I am that thedetachment has come together in getting the jobdone this year. It is great seeing new membersjumping in and giving us a hand. In the month of Junewe have Flag Day, a day mostly overlooked by many. How many of you flew your flag on 9/11? I challengeall of you to fly our flag this month and the months tocome. Put old glory someplace, let your neighborsknow that we still support our great country. At lastmonth’s meeting we gave away some hard-earnedmonies. Let me assure you that every penny went toworthy causes! I have appointed the adjutant and thepaymaster to look into each one, not only seeing ifthey are worthy, but how much of the money actuallygoes to the cause. With the cutbacks from the Veterans Administration, the veteran has to face many challenges until hereceives his disability pension. With the back log onclaims this can be a long wait. The only other optionshe has are veterans’ organizations like ours, and wemust do what we can to help. The veteran should beput at the top. How can we let our vets sleep in thestreets and beg for money? I will tell you one thing, look at the prison system and see how many vets arethere. Why? Monuments are good but they don’t putfood in their mouths. We cannot let this happen aslong as God has given us the means to help them!God Bless & Semper Fi,It Happened This MonthIn Marine Corps Historyrd3 1944th11 1970st1 1946th19 1864The designation of Marine TransportSquadrons is changed from VMJ to VMRCommunist forces begin a series ofattacks, the largest since the “TetOffensive,” against Marine combinedaction program units and pacifiedvillages in “I Corps” zone. Member ReceivesLong-awaited Purple HeartAfter fifty-six years, Lt. Col. P. W. Chandler, 3/1/1Battalion congratulates Albert C. DeVito after officiallypresenting his Purple Heart for Wounds receivedduring the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in North Korea,November 28, 1950.This presentation took place at the Third BattalionParade Grounds at Camp Pendleton on November27, 2006. The temperature was about 72 degrees---adifference of about 112 degrees. This did not includethe wind chill factor from thewinds blowing across theChosin Reservoir fromManchuria.Al also received the NavyCommendation Medalwith the Combat “V” forValor during the battle ofChosin Reservoir in NorthKorea, November 28,1950.Al was manning ItemCompany’s ForwardObservation Post when ath4 of July exploded andwhat seemed like tenmillion Chinese launcheda massive attack. BehindItems Company’s frontline was the First MarineDivision Command Postand General Smith. Afterwhat seemed like an eternity—Thank God—theCommunist Chinese finally withdrew. If ItemCompany had not held it would have been possiblefor the Chinese to capture the First Marine Division’sColors----that would have been disastrous.Al took his five prisoners down the hill to theCompany Command Post and turned them over tostthe 1 Sergeant. While down there Al then went overto the Ammunition Storage Depot and retrieved in thedark two cases of machine gun ammunition and onecase of white phosphorus grenades.Everything worked out fine, Al wasn’t blown to bitsand he took the machine gun ammo over to BillPing’s machine gun squad that was running out ofammunition. It was here that Bill Ping and NormGrossman discovered that Al’s face was covered withblood. They thought he had been wounded andescorted him down the hill to the Aid Station. Afterthe corpsman cleaned up his face, he discoveredthat Al’s eardrums were ruptured. He packedcotton in his hears and sent him back on line. Hetold Al that he did not qualify for a Purple Heartbecause he had to be wounded by an enemybullet, shrapnel, or shell fragment. In 2002 Al went over to Long Beach VA MedicalCenter to be fitted for Hearing Aids. He had 80%loss of hearing. He was asked how thishappened and Al told them that the Chinese hadthrown 2 concussion grenades in his combathole. He was asked if he bled from his ears fromthe concussion. Al said yes. He was told by theaudiologist that he might be eligible fora Purple Heart because he bled fromboth ears.To make a long story short, Al applied tothe VA and three years later he receivedhis Purple Heart.!"##* ," -,.Due to recent laws in the Privacy Act, theDetachment no longer can be in possession ofMilitary Separation Papers, DD-214, Discharge, orMilitary ID Cards.
