ABOUT NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT)About NDTNDT plays a key role in assessingconformity and reliability of equipmentand piping used in infrastructure and oiland gas and power industry. With the rightNDT technology integrity assessmentsare made and corrosion data is gathered.New and older technologies, however, only bring added value when used in aproper way. Therefore operator trainingand certification is key in every inspectionprogram to ensure compliance andimprove quality and integrity.Often expectations are not met becausethe operator was not trained well orwrong equipment has been used. Badperformed inspections can lead to unsafesituations, productions loss and nonconformities in international tradebusiness. The reliability of the NDT depends onmany factors and operator training is oneof the critical areas that are only too oftenoverlooked. SGS NDT Training &Examination Centre can help you tomanage risk, protect your company andits reputation.About SGS NDT Training & Examination CentreAbout SGS NDT Training &Examination CentreChina represents huge businessopportunities for every ambitious companyin the Industrial markets. The market ofChina is ever increasing at an incrediblepace, however, one area of concern thatinternational clients have is the quality ofthe products produced in China. Oftenafter delivery from the manufacturer inChina it is found that the quality of thematerials and products are not meetingthe clients’ requirements and expectation.SGS now offers internationally recognisedtraining and certification services inNon-Destructive Testing in China. The aimis to create a wider availability ofinspectors and technicians who aretrained and certified in accordance withthe European and American standards forthe qualification and certification of NDTpersonnel, EN473. This will ensure anincreased quality of the inspection andtherefore provide a lower risk of productsbeing out of specification on arrival at theirdestination. To manage this risk, NDT inspections areperformed during and after manufacturingof the products, however, these tests andinspections are carried out by inspectorswho have usually received little orinadequate training and examinations. The training and examinations that SGSoffers are in accordance with the highestEuropean and American standards (EN473/ ISO 9712 / ASNT), with a particular focuson the extensive training syllabus for allNDT methods and will offer PersonalCertification of NDT (PCN) which areissued by the British Institute of NDT(BINDT).The need for high quality NDT service inChina is growing at a rapid pace and thisnew service is attractive for all companiesand institutions that are doing businesswith international customers. The courses will be held in Shanghai andat company premises should it bespecifically requested. Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT)This method involves the componentunder inspection being magnetized, thismagnetization process is supplementedby the application of ferromagneticparticles to the already magnetizedsurface. The magnetic particles areattracted to areas of flux leakage(escaping magnetism) and indicationsformed at that point. This method is usedto test welds, castings, and forgings forsurface or slightly subsurface defects. However MT can only be used to inspectmaterials that can be magnetized, i.e.ferromagnetic materials. We can provide Magnetic Particle trainingcourses and examinations suitable for anyof the following certification schemesn PCN / EN 473 / ISO 9712Level 1, 2 and 3n SNT-TC-1A in accordance withyour company written practiceWe can also providen Preparation training for ASNT Level 3An example of the syllabus that is usedfor magnetic particle training courses isshown below for Level 1 and Level 2.SGS can tailor make the syllabus tosatisfy the requirements of an individualscompany specific written practice ifrequested.Level 1General Theoryn Safety Precautionsn Basic Principles of MagneticParticle Inspectionn Methods of Magnetisationn Inspection and Detection ofIndicationsn Checks and Calibrationsn Equipmentn Test Proceduresn Detectability of Defectsn Standards and SpecificationsSpecific TheoryApplication of the Method and use ofCodes, Specifications and Procedures, applicable to the company, including therelevant control checks.Practical ExaminationFollow written instructions and processthe inspection test pieces, record andreport defects from known datummarkers, carry out pre-test calibrationchecks and post-test procedures.LeveL 2General TheorySpecific TheoryPractical Examination(in addition to the Level 1 Syllabus above)n Safety Precautionsn Testing Proceduresn Detectability of Defectsn Interpretation and Reportingn Post Test Proceduresn Calculationsn Selection of Appropriate TechniquesApplication of the Method to the specificrequirements of the company, in particularmaking reference to those Codes,Specifications and Procedures used by theCompany, including the relevant controlchecks. Liquid Penetrant Inspection (PT)This involves applying a liquid dye to thesurface of a material and leaving the dyeto “dwell” on the surface for apredetermined period of time. The liquidcan be either a colour that is easilyvisible under normal lighting conditionsor a yellow/green fluorescent colour thatrequires special lighting conditions to beseen effectively.applied to the surface of the materialand the dye that is trapped inside thesurface discontinuities is blotted backout on to the surface and forms anindication. This indication is theninterpreted by a qualified interpreter. This liquid dye enters into discontinuitiesthat are open to the surface of thematerial through a phenomenon called“capillary action”. This capillary actiontakes place throughout the dwell timeand the discontinuity retains this dyewhen the excess dye is cleaned fromthe surface. A type of developer is thenWe can provide Liquid Penetrant (PT)training courses and examinationssuitable for the following certificationschemes at Level 1, 2 and 3n PCN / EN 473 / ISO 9712n SNT-TC-1A in accordancewith your company writtenpracticeThe PT method is suitable on most nonabsorbent materials. We can also providen Preparation training for ASNT Level 3An example of the syllabus that is usedfor Liquid Penetrant training courses isshown below for Level 1 and 2. Radiographic Testing (RT)This method is based on the sameprinciple as medical radiography in ahospital. A piece of radiographic film isplaced on the remote side of the materialunder inspection and radiation is thentransmitted through from one side of thematerial to the remote side where theradiographic film is placed. The radiographic film detects theradiation and measures the variousquantities of radiation received over theentire surface of the film. This film isthen processed under dark roomconditions and the various degrees ofradiation received by the film are imagedby the display of different degrees ofblack and white, this is termed the filmdensity and is viewed on a special lightemitting device.Discontinuities in the material affect theamount of radiation being received bythe film through that particular plane ofthe material. Qualified inspectors caninterpret the resultant images and recordthe location and type of defect present inthe material. Radiography can be usedon most materials and product forms,e.g. welds, castings, composites etc.Radiographic testing provides apermanent record in the form of aradiograph and provides a highlysensitive image of the internal structureof the material. Radiography is split intotwo main categoriesn Radiographic Testingn Radiographic InterpretationThe radiographic testing course is forNDT personnel who execute the practicalinspection using radioactive material orradiation emitting devices. Theradiographic interpretation course isdesigned purely for the interpretation ofthe resultant radiographic image. However, to understand the principles ofimage formation, sensitivity and correcttechniques the general theory syllabus isthe same for both courses. The two sectors of the RadiographicTesting examination that are NOTrequired for the RadiographicInterpretation examination aren Basic Radiation Safety (BRS)n Practical Examination of theSpecimensPCN minimum work experience andtraining hours’ requirements forRT examinationsLevel 1n 40 hours Trainingn 3 months Work ExperienceLevel 2n 80 hours Training (additional to the40 hours for Level 1)n 9 months Work Experience(additional to the 3 months for Level 1)If a candidate wishes to go direct toLevel 2 without first taking the Level 1route, the minimum requirements arethe total accumulative requirements ofboth Level 1 and 2.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)This method employs high frequencysound pulses that are emitted from atransducer; this sound wave is induced into the material through a probe which isusually in contact with the material. These sound waves propagate throughthe material, and are reflected back tothe probe when they reach an interface. The reflected waves are transmitted backthrough the probe and connecting leadsto a detector which can be eitheranalogue or digital. The sounds wavesare then displayed as a series of signalson a monitor and the qualified inspectorcan measure, and interpret these signalsto allow accurate evaluation of theinternal structure of the material.Ultrasonic testing can not only be usedto indicate a surface or subsurface flaw itcan also be used to determine the depth, size and type of flaw. Another advantageof using UT is the accurate measurementof the thickness of the material. Themethod can be applied to most materialsproviding the material can transmitsound waves. UT is considered to be afast and effective way of inspectionproviding high sensitive results.PCN minimum work experience andtraining hour’s requirements forUT examinationsLevel 1n 40 hours Trainingn 3 months Work ExperienceLevel 2n 80 hours Training (additionalto the 40 hours for Level 1)n 3 months Work Experience(additional to the 3 month forLevel 1)If a candidate wishes to go direct toLevel 2 without first taking the Level 1route, the minimum requirements arethe total accumulative requirements ofboth Level 1 and 2.We can provide Ultrasonic trainingcourses and examinations suitablefor any of the following certificationschemesn PCN / EN 473 / ISO 9712Levels 1, 2 and 3n SNT-TC-1A in accordance withyour company written practiceWe can also providen Preparation training forASNT Level 3

Visual Inspection (VT)This method involves both direct andindirect visual inspection techniques, direct inspection is where the material isinspected directly by the human eye withno additional visual aids, indirectinspection may involve the use ofmagnifying glass, mirror, borescope (minicamera), closed-circuit TV etc.PCN minimum work experience andtraining hour’s requirements forVT examinationsLevel 1n 16 hours Trainingn 1 month Work ExperienceLevel 2Visual inspection is a crucial NDT methodwhich is too often overlooked, this shouldbe the basis for inspectors starting out inthe NDT industry, for example, a visualexamination of an operational plant canoften reveal obvious problem areas, suchas leaks, excess vibration, corrosion ormisalignment, this inspection is a verycost effective exercise and can be usedto identify areas that require further NDTapplications.n 24 hours Training(additional to the16 hours for Level 1)n 3 months Work Experience(additional to the 1 month for Level 1)If a candidate wishes to go direct toLevel 2 without first taking the Level 1route, the minimum requirements arethe total accumulative requirements ofboth Level 1 and 2.We can provide visual test trainingcourses and examinations suitablefor any of the following certificationschemesn PCN / EN 473 / ISO 9712Levels 1, 2 and 3n SNT-TC-1A in accordancewith your company writtenpracticeWe can also providen Preparation training for ASNT Level 3An example of the syllabus that is usedfor visual inspection training courses isshown below for Level 1 and 2. time of flight diffraction (tofd)Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) isbecoming one of widely used nondestructive testing method for weldinspection. The main difference of TOFDtechnique is based on received ultrasonicdiffractions which are from tip ofimperfections instead of receivedreflected signals in conventional method. The basic arrangement of the TOFDtechnique consists of two probes in thepitch-and-catch configuration, with oneprobe acting as the transmitter and thesecond probe as the receiver. Such anarrangement provides a large volume forinspection and provides for unambiguouslocation of the position and depth of thereflectors. This advanced ultrasonic technique hasspecial features such as highestprobability of defect detection, veryaccurate sizing of defects (better than 0.2mm), increased speed of inspection, permanent digital record of the inspectiondata, efficient detection of defectindependent of defect orientation andhighest reliability of inspection quality. The application of TOFD technique can beclassified into areas i.e., pre-serviceinspections of linear butt welds on vessels, pipeline and plates. In-service inspectionwhich includes corrosion monitoring, cladding measurement and conditionmonitoring (growth of flaws) on differentproduct sectors like marine engineering, oil & gas, large-sized steel structure, windpower industry, aircraft industry and so on.PCN minimum work experience andtraining hour’s requirements forTOFD examinationsLevel 1n 40 hours Trainingn 3 months Work ExperienceLevel 2n 40 hours Training(additional to the40 hours for Level 1)n 9 months Work Experience(additional to the 3 months for Level 1)All Candidates attempting PCNexamination must hold BINDTrecognised appropriate level ofcertification in conventional UltrasonicWeld Testing, issued by a certificationbody recognised by BINDT.
