PQNDT Salary & Benefits Survey 2018LETTER FROM MICHAEL SERABIANCLICK HERE TO RETURNTO TABLE OF CONTENTSNDT: THE ESSENTIAL INDUSTRYThe longest sustained economic recovery in U.S. history has resulted in a similarly sustained period of growthin the nondestructive testing industry, with employment and wages both rising strongly over the past threeyears.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly wage across all occupation in the U.S.during 2018 was 18.58, and median annual compensation was 51,960, an annualized growth rate of 0.1%.Our NDT Salary & Benefits Survey shows that the NDT industry far exceeds these numbers, with average wagegrowth of approximately 10% over the last 36 months. Nationally, the unemployment rate stands at 3.8%. Yetour industry tops that with just 3.2% of NDT professionals unemployed. Will this continue? Experts think so. According to a report issued in March 2019 by Mordor Intelligence, theglobal NDT market was valued at 15.67 billion in 2018, and is expected to reach 23.1 billion by 2024, a growthrate of 6.7%. The U.S. dominates employment in the NDT industry, and serves to benefit the most from thissurge in demand.OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH IN THE U.S.The United States generates the world’s largest demand for NDT services. The decade long American economicrecovery has revitalized key industries in which nondestructive testing plays an essential role. Among theindustry sectors that are performing well, with continuing growth expected are:OIL, GAS & PETROCHEMICALSWhile somewhat tempered by recent fluctuations in crude oil prices, domestic oil production has been aboon to NDT, and there is more work on the horizon. With the United States Department of the Interior(DOI) planning to allow offshore exploratory drilling in about 90% of the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS)acreage, under the National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program in the coming years, theoil and gas sector is expected to open up even more new opportunities.AEROSPACE AND DEFENSEThe aerospace industry saw a strong resurgence in 2018, and, according to an industry report from Deloitte, that growth is expected to continue, thanks to a backlog of aircraft orders and ramped up production rates. In the defense industry, heightened global tensions have led to an increase in the U.S. defense budget.CONSTRUCTIONA building frenzy that seems to be limited only by the availability of trained workers has been ongoingacross the U.S. for several years. While this pace shows signs of cooling off, the apparent willingness of thefederal government to support infrastructure improvements - including bridges and highways that requirenondestructive testing - could present additional opportunities for the NDT industry in the years ahead.A SHIFT TO CONTRACTORSOne important trend we have spotted is a significant increase in the hiring of Contract NDT workers. Thereasons for this are many, including a desire to keep staffing levels flexible and difficulty in hiring and retainingqualified workers in a job market that is employee-friendly. However, we believe that many NDT professionalsare choosing the contract route deliberately, making a career choice that offers its own flexibility whilemaximizing income potential. Look for that trend to continue. All in all, the future looks bright for our essential industry. I hope you find the information in the followingpages to be interesting and helpful.Your Path to the Perfect Job Starts Here.22 Bates Road, Suite 156, Mashpee, MA 02649Tel 800-736-3841 Fax 781-643-1786www.pqndt.comSincerely,Michael P.
