WARNING!Failure to observe the following warnings could lead to a risk of serious bodily harm: Never spin a bearing with compressed air. The rollers may be forcefully expelled. If a hammer and bar are used for bearing removal, fragments from the hammer, bar, or the bearingcan be released with high velocity.NOTE: A mild steel bar is preferred since it is less susceptible to fragmenting. When installing or removing bearings, always wear safety glasses or goggles.Failure to observe the following instructions can result in equipment failure leading to a riskof serious bodily harm: Proper maintenance and handling practices are critical. Follow installation instructions and maintainproper lubrication. Do not attempt to disassemble unitized bearings. Components may be damaged. Do not use a damaged bearing. Do not mix parts of matched assemblies. Bearing damage could result.Actual bearing performance is affected by many factors beyond the control of The Timken Company. Therefore, the feasibility of all bearing applications should be validated by the customer. The datacontained in this guide is intended for reference purposes and will assist you in part number andexternal bearing dimension identification.iTIMKEN-Hong Kong Eric Bearing Co.,Ltd, Web Site: www.fagbearing.cc

TAPERED ROLLING BEARING – BASIC DESIGNConsidering the performance demands placed on taperedroller bearings, it’s rather amazing how simple the basicdesign really is. Timken tapered roller bearings minimizefriction because of the interrelationship of the bearing’sfour basic parts:INNER RING(CONE)CONEASSEMBLY The inner ring, or cone, is mounted onto the shaft. The outer ring, or cup, sits in the housing (hub). The tapered rollers, or rolling elements, allow relativemotion between the cone and cup thus minimizing friction between the two.ROLLING ELEMENTS(TAPERED ROLLERS) The cage, or separator, spaces and holds the rolling elements in the proper position. The races are the surfaces on the cup and cone wherethe rolling elements make contact.OUTER RING(CUP)The tapered roller bearing’s most important dimensionsare:CAGE The outside diameter of the outer ring, or cup, is knownas the O.D. (D). The other basic dimension of this part isthe cup width (C). Both are important for fitting thebearing onto the housing. The inside diameter of the inner ring, or cone is calledthe bore (d). This diameter must be correct in order tofit the bearing onto the shaft. The other basic dimensionof this part is the cone width (B). When cup and cone are mated (including rollers andcage), the overall dimension is called the overall bearing width (T).Bearing components or assemblies must be in alignment.Their fit onto a shaft or within a housing must be squareor in alignment by checking: The maximum shaft radius (R), which allows the conebackface to make contact with the shoulder of theshaft. The maximum housing radius (r), which allows the cupbackface to make contact with the shoulder of MKEN-Hong Kong Eric Bearing Co.,Ltd, Web Site: www.fagbearing.cc

TAPERED ROLLER BEARINGS – SPACER ASSEMBLIESSpacer Bearing AssembliesSpacer bearing assemblies speed up bearing installationtime because there is no need for bearing adjustment.Spacer bearing assemblies are suitable for use withtwo-row and four-row Timken tapered roller bearingsto preset the bench lateral (bench end play). Mostmatched bearing assemblies have serial numbers toensure correct installation sequence.Timken spacer bearings are precisely ground to providethe exact bench lateral required for the particularbearing application.Since each spacer is custom-fitted to a particular set ofcomponents, a spacer cannot be used with any otherbearing components – even if they carry the same partnumbers. When ordering replacement bearing assemblies, specify: cone number assembly number. If you do not have the assembly number, specify thecomponent part numbers including: cone number cup number spacer number bench end play, which is etched on the spacer. If you do not have any part numbers for the spacerassembly, specify: Name of equipment Model number Year Application position of the bearing.Tapered Double Outer (TDO)This diagram depicts the way spacers are used betweenthe cone front faces in the TDO bearing. The spacer fitsbetween the two single cones.CONE ASSEMBLYWARNING: Always follow manufacturer’sinstructions. Failure to follow all instructions and toproperly lubricate the bearing can cause equipmentfailure, creating a risk of serious bodily harm.Over-filling or under-filling a wheel hub withlubricant may result in premature component failure.Creating a risk of serious bodily harm.Never spin a bearing with compressed air. Therollers may be forcefully expelled, creating a risk ofserious bodily harm.DOUBLE CUPSPACERCONE ASSEMBLYTapered Double Inner (TDI)Here is an example of how spacers are used betweenthe cup front faces in the type TDI bearing. HOW TO USE THE BEARING DIMENSION GUIDEThis guide contains the basic information for most general-use partsin production by The Timken Company. The data contained within thisguide is intended for reference purposes and will assist you in partnumber and external bearing dimension identification. What you will find Cup and cone combinations are grouped by series designation.Dimensional information, inch and metric form, is provided for eachcup and cone combination and includes the following:NOMENCLATUREDIMENSION SYMBOL bore size“d” outside diameter (O.D.)“D” bearing width“T” cone width“B” cup width“C” shaft and housing max fillet radii“R” for cones – “r” for cups bearing weight Where additional characteristics are important to differentiatebetween parts, the part number is proceeded by an asterisk (*).These characteristics are available in the remarks column. How to find part numbers If you know the part number, use the index to locate the sectionwhere you will find the part. Once in that section, series arearranged in ascending order. If you only know the cone bore dimension, use the section titledBEARING DIMENSION BY CONE BORE to find an appropriate series.ivTIMKEN-Hong Kong Eric Bearing Co.,Ltd, Web Site: www.fagbearing.cc

INDUSTRIAL FITTING PRACTICESINTRODUCTIONMounting a bearing with the proper fit helps ensure thebearing will function as desired. In general, the rotatingrace must be mounted with a tight fit. A loose fit is usedon a stationary cone or on a double cup, especially atthe floating position. Cups mounted in an aluminumhousing must have minimum tight fit of .001 times thecup O.D. For magnesium housings, the minimum tight fitmust be .0015 times the cup O.D. The fitting practiceslisted within this catalog are specific to industrial applications. Automotive bearings require special fittingpractices.Rolling mill bearings also require special fittingpractices depending on the type of bearing involved.Refer to the Timken booklet “Rolling Mill Bearings” fora complete discussion of fitting practices.Precision bearings require a special fit that depends onthe precision class of the bearing used. In addition tothe proper fit and bearing alignment, the desired accuracy of the spindle, cup and cone seat roundness, andsquare backing shoulders for both the cup and the coneare very critical. Less than desirable spindle runout willlikely result if any of these areas are out of tolerance. Acomplete discussion showing recommended fits, cupseat and cone seat roundness and backing squarenessis found in the booklet “Timken Bearings For MachineTools”. Cone seats - ground 63 micro-inches AA (maximum)(1.6 micrometer).INCH SYSTEM BEARINGSCONE FITTING PRACTICE (inches)CONE BOREMACHINED SURFACE FINISHES FOR SHAFTS ANDHOUSINGSThe cup and cone seats should be smooth and withinspecified tolerances for size, roundness and taper.Ground finish is usually recommended for shafts whenever possible. The recommended finish for ground andturned surfaces is as follows: Cone seats - turned 125 micro-inches AA (maximum)(3.2 micrometer). If the bearing seat finishes are rougher than these limits, there is not enough contact area and the fit willloosen easily, especially if the race is pressed on andoff several times. The following tables show machined finishes for shaftsand housings and the recommended fitting practice forboth inch and metric sizes.CLASS: 4 AND 2 CONESDEVIATION FROM MINIMUM CONE BORE AND RESULTANT FITROTATING ORSTATIONARY CONESTATIONARY CONEGround SeatUnground orUnground SeatGround SeatUnground SeatHardened andGround SeatGround SeatConstant LoadsHeavy Loads,Moderate Loads,Moderate Loads,Sheaves, Wheels,WheelWithor High SpeedNo ShockNo ShockIdlersSpindlesModerate Shockor ShockCone Seat Resultant Cone Seat Resultant Cone Seat Resultant Cone Seat Resultant Cone Seat Resultant Cone Seat tionFitDeviationFitDeviationFit 0.00150.0015T 0.00250.0025T L 0.00100.0005T 010L-0.00070.0012L 0.00250.0025T LUse Average Tight 020L-0.00120.0022LCone Fit of 0.00500.0050T 0.00200.0020T0.00000.00000.00000.0000—— 040L——0.0005 in./in. of 0.00750.0075T 0.00300.0030T0.00000.00000.00000.0000——Cone Bore 060L——ROTATING 4.000024.000036.0000ToleranceDoes notapply toTNASWandTNASWE.typebearings.0.0000 0.00050.0000 0.00100.0000 0.00200.0000 0.0030EXAMPLE:If the minimum cone bore 3.
