Jostens is pleasedto provide this magazine toevery high school yearbookstaff in the country twice ayear as part of its commitmentto education. Email editionssupplement the printmagazine.ACADEMICS Coverscurriculum-relatedexperiences whereverthey take students.ADVERTISING Dictated by budget and policy and caninclude business and recognition ads.ADVISER Although no two yearbook advisers handlethe job in the exact same way, the adviser’s job is that ofa teacher, leader, manager and coach. Effective advisersteach the staff the skills necessary to publish the yearbookand then empower the students to produce as much of thepublication as possible. The spelling of the word “adviser”often confuses yearbook staffs. Although most dictionariescall for the word to be spelled “advisor,” for journalisticpublications, the Associated Press Stylebook stipulates theword be spelled “adviser.”ANALOGOUS Groups ofcolors that are adjacent to eachother on the color wheel, withone being the dominant color.Analogous color schemes areoften found in nature and areharmonious and pleasing tothe eye. Using analogous colorswill create unity and harmonyin a design. 93

YEARBOOK A-ZAQUEOUS COATING A fast-drying, water-based, protectiveclear coating similar to varnish for application to Litho coversand interior pages. Due to its water base, aqueous coating ismore environmentally friendly than varnish or UV coatings.BLENDED CONTENT A coverage approach in whichspreads are built on topics with coverage coming from alltraditional content areas.ASCENDER Theportion of a lower caseletter that extendsabove the x-height.ATTRIBUTION Giving proper credit tothe person who made the quoted statement. Material that is notcommon knowledge or states an opinion needs to be attributed.BbBACKGROUND Colorsand photographs can beused to accent the pagebackground. This techniqueis often overused in yearbooksand the result is a background that overpowers the photographyand makes the text difficult to read. For maximum effectiveness,backgrounds are best used in light colors and in limited areason the spread. Rarely should a background cover the entiretwo pages.BENEFIT The reasons customers have for buying theyearbook. While one feature of the yearbook is that it has greatphotos of many friends, the benefit to the consumer is thatlooking at photos is fun and images will evoke memories formany years.BLACK-AND-WHITE As in photography, a good designwill always work as well in black and white as is does in color.Black-and-white images and graphic elements can be used indesign to help emphasize content, add contrast, lead the eyeand balance a composition, just as you would with color.BLACK AND WHITE Fenton High School [MI]94 BLENDED CONTENT Rocklin High School [CA]BRAINSTORMING A creative process used by two or morepeople to generate ideas or solve problems. CENTER OF INTEREST Primary subject that catches readers’attention first. Should be the focal point or dominant elementwithin the photo.CHRONOLOGICAL CONTENT A coverage approach thatuses a time element such as seasons or months to organizethe content.CLIP ART Artwork, shapes,backgrounds, logos and bordersprovided for use on yearbookpages. Each school is assigned aconsultant and provided a toll-free number for calling.COPY Words written in a variety of formats to tell a story.Also called a story or article.COPYRIGHT Exclusive rights for the creator or owner oforiginal literary, artistic or photographic material to make,distribute and control copies of that work for a specified numberof years, as guaranteed by law. The use of copyrighted materialwithout first obtaining permission from the copyright holder iscopyright infringement.CONTRAST Opposing elements spark visual interest. If allcontent elements are the same size, format, shape, weight orcolor, the design risks becoming monotonous. Variety is thekey to keeping the visual presentation lively. Thisshould be avoided.ENDSHEET The heavy paper between the cover and the firstand last pages that helps hold the inside pages into the cover.EMBOSSING An application that alters the surface of thecover by providing a three dimensional or raised effect. Theprocedure requires the use of two dies: one that is raised andone that is recessed. The dies fit into each other so that when thecover material is pressed between them, the raised die forces thestock into the recessed die and creates the embossed impression.EVEN PAGE Displayed on the left side of the gutter. 97

YEARBOOK A-ZEEYE FLOW The natural movement from leftto right with the content elements moving theeye into the center and/or toward other keyelements. The goal is to keep the reader movingfrom element to element.EYELINE An imaginary, horizontal band of 1-pica spacingused as a unifying device. The eyeline runs across the two facingpages, visually linking the spread.FfFACET FOIL DEBOSSING Using a special die, this coverapplication combines heatand pressure to stamp a sharp,beveled-edge foil design intothe cover.FEATURE A physical or emotional aspect of the yearbookproduct that interests potential consumers. Answers to thesequestions are features: What is on the cover? How many pagesare in the yearbook? How much color is used?FEATURE STORY A traditional-story approach packed withfacts, figures, descriptive details, specific examples, quotes andpoignant anecdotes.
