INTRODUCTIONThis book is a tutorial manual for setting up and operating various social media websites likeFacebook, Twitter and LinkedIn etc. It is a part of our project for The Franklin McKinleyChildren’s Initiative for our CS-100W class at San Jose State University.This manual was created with an assumption that the reader and user is not tech savvy, and willfind the directions easy to understand and follow.We have tried to make the tutorial as intuitive and easy as possible, and have included all theessential information to help the user develop a social media platform by creating new socialmedia accounts, edit and update their accounts, upload and share new information, and makeconnections etc.2

Facebook TutorialWhat is Facebook?Facebook is the most popular social network in the U.S. andinternationally. This tool can aid in building relationships withmembers as well as other organizations. It can help reach outto the public with news, information and events raisingawareness about your organization. Here are some simplesteps to manage your organization’s page.4

1) Getting StartedGo to www.Facebook.comand create an account. Enteyour name, email addressand password. Whencreating a busionessaccouunt, use theappropriate user name andbirthdate.Then, click on theSign Up button.2) Account SettingsThe Settings buttonwill take you to theGeneral AccountSettings menu.5

Here is what the General Account Settings panel looks like. On the left side is a list of the different categoriesthe Account Settings panel offers.In the ‘GeneralAccount Settings’, youcan edit your email,password, and languagesettings.a) General: Here you can edit the email, password and preferred language of your account by clicking on theappropriate “Edit” link next to each field.On the left side of the page, under the General button is the Security button.6

b) Security: Here you can edit the many security features of your account by clicking on theappropriate “Edit” link next to each field.c) Mobile: Here you can add or remove a mobile phone to the account. Once verified, this willallow account recovery in case of a lost or forgotten passwordIf you add a mobile number to your Facebook account, you'll have an alternate way to verifyyour account should you need to pass any checkpoints.7

d) Followers: Here you can manage your follower comments and notifications as well as linkyour Facebook account to Twitter. This panel also provides an HTML button you can copy andpaste into the HTML code of your webpage.8

e) Apps: Here you can edit the Application features associated with your Facebook page byclicking on the ‘Edit’ button next to each application.There are also the ‘Ads’, ‘Payments’ and ‘Support Dashboard’ tabs. You might want to set upan ad in order to grow your audience. We will talk more about this later, but for now let’s goback to your page by clicking on the “Facebook” link in the blue bar at the upper right.9

3) Admin PanelBack on your AdminPanel, click on the‘Edit’ button, andselect ‘Update PageInfo’Once you are on the ‘Update PageInfo’ page, you will see your nameon the top left corner of the pagealong with a couple of otherbuttons. Click on the ‘Page Info’button to add/ edit your generalinformationOn this page, you can add/edit your name, page address, address, description and overviews etc.This page is highly important when creating a business or company account.10

Next, click on the‘Settings’ button to editpage visibility and otherprivacy settings.Click on ‘Admin Roles’to edit admin settingsOn the ‘Admin Roles’ page, you can add/edit/update admin info. When making a corporateaccount, it is advisable and beneficial to use multiple admins to operate the account.11

On the Admin Panel page’,click on the ‘BuildAudience’ button. Then,select the ‘Invite EmailContacts’ option. Thisfeature allows users topopulate their page bysending out email invites.That’s enough4) NotificationsOn your Admin Panel page,you get all yournotifications. These include‘Likes’, ‘Messages’,‘Invites’ etc.12

P.S- You can alwayshide the Admin Panelpage by clicking on the‘Hide’ button.5) Uploading Photos and Creating AlbumsTo upload a photo or video, or to create a Photo Album, Click on “Photo/Video” and thenselect “Upload Photo/Video” or “Create Photo Album”13

6) Updating your StatusStatus updates are your primary means of communication. Click on “Status”, type somethingyou want to post, and click on “Post”.To make an Event, click on “Offer,7) Creating an EventEvent ” and select “Event”.14

In the pop-up window,add all the appropriateEvent info, and click“Create”.The ‘Events’ feature is an excellent tool for corporate accounts to promote and publicize theirupcoming events and happenings.This concludes our basic Facebook tutorial.More information can be found at https://www.facebook.com/help/?ref contextual15

LinkedIn TutorialWhat is LinkedIn?LinkedIn is a business oriented social networking websitethat allows you to create a business or personal profilewhere you can promote your skills, knowledge andexperience while allowing you to connect withprofessionals in your field, network, and do business.16

1) GETTING STARTEDStep 1Go to www.linkedin.comand get started.Enter your first and lastname, an email address andcreate a password.Then, click on the ‘Joinnow’ button.When creating a LinkedIn profile, make sure to use your professional email address. By doing so, youget most of your professional contacts. If creating a profile for a company, make sure to use the emailaddress with the company’s domain name in it.2) SETTING UP YOUR PROFILEStep 2Enter your professional information andclick on ‘Create my profile’ button.HINT: If making an account for abusiness, enter the appropriate ZIP code.It’s helpful during the search process!17

Also, when filling out Step 2, take care of the “I am currently” option; especially when creating acompany profile.3) CONFIRMING YOUR ACCOUNTStep 3When directed to your email,click on the ‘Confirm youremail address’ button, and youwill be re-directed to yourLinkedIn account.Confirming your email address makes sure that your profile is legit and ready to be populated. This page mightlook different according to your email account, just be sure to click on the ‘Confirm your email address’ button.4) BEGINNING TO ADD CONTACTSStep 4Once you are re-directed to yourLinkedIn account, enter youremail address to find the peoplefrom your email contacts onLinkedIn.18

Even though it is important to add contacts and connections to your account, it is advisable to skip thisstep and start adding connections once your profile is considerably populated. See Step 8 and 9.5) ADDING BASIC INFORMATION ON YOUR PROFILEStep 5On your profile page, click the‘Edit profile’ button to start editingyour LinkedIn profile.HINT: Fill up the intricate detailsof your profile by answering (andsaving) these questions. Don’tskip them unless you really haveMake sure you add the proper names, designations and contactto!information on your profile. Pay extra attention if the profile is for a company and not a certain individual.6) EDITING YOUR EXTENDED PROFILEStep 6Start editing yourprofile!!Add your name,company’s name,position etc.19

On the right side of the screen, there are many more sections that you can add/edit. Utilize all thesefeatures and expand your profile.Also, if you have multiple social media accounts, (bonus points if they have the same domain name),edit your LinkedIn domain name with the same address.7) ADDING A SUMMARY AND OTHER SKILLS TO YOUR PROFILEStep 7Scroll down and edit yourSummary.HINT: Utilize the 2000character limit to itsfullest. Sell yourself andyour talent!Hint #2: At the end of yoursummary, mention yourstrongest skills.A summary is where readers will get the most information about you, your talents or your companyand the products it offers. Make sure to utilize all of the 2000 characters you are allotted. Be precise,but not uber professional. Make the summary chatty, and conversational. Sell yourself, but don’t forceyour talents on the reader. Then, Scroll down and add your skills, awards etc.20

8) NETWORKINGStep 8Once you’ve considerablypopulated your profile, click on the‘Network’ button under the searchtab, and start finding moreconnections!Once you’re done populating your profile, it’s time to get recognized and add some connections!9) ADDING CONTACTS VIA EMAILStep 9Search for contacts in allyour email addresses, andsee if you can find anyconnections on LinkedIn.Now’s the time make connections with the people you know. Email your professional (and personal)acquaintances. It is advisable to connect with people who are trustworthy and recommendable; i.e anex-supervisor rates higher than your high school class monitor.21

10) ADDING CONTACTS VIA ADVANCED SEARCHStep 10Then, click on the ‘Advanced’button next to the search tab andsearch for connections with the helpof the various options in the‘Advanced People Search’.This feature lets you search for contacts at an ‘advanced’ level. Now’s the time to connect with yourcurrent (and ex) professional peers and supervisors, business associates, and clients etc.11) ADDING A TWITTER ACCOUNT TO YOUR LINKEDIN PROFILEStep 11On the upper right corner of yourprofile page, click on the ‘Account& Settings’ button, and click on‘Privacy & Settings’ option fromthe drop down menu.This will direct you to your PrivacyControls and Settings menu. (SeeStep 12.)22

The next step is to work on the privacy and sharing features on your ‘considerably populated’ LinkedInprofile. Again, this is not something to be done immediately.Step 11 (Continued)Click on the ‘Manageyour Twitter settings’button to link yourLinkedIn profile withyour Twitter.Once you click on the ‘Manage your Twitter settings’ Button, a new window pops up. See Step13.(Continued)23

Step 11 (Continued)Once the ‘Manage your Twitter settings’ window pops up, click on the ‘Add your Twitteraccount’ button, and another Twitter application window will pop up.On this window, enter the login info for your Twitter account to connect it with your LinkedIn.When linking your LinkedIn to any social media account, be mindful of the account you’re creating. Ifit’s a business account, connect the linked in with the Business social media accounts.Don’t have a Twitter account? We have a tutorial for that too! See page 27 of this tutorial.24

ADDITIONAL FEATURES –12) UPGRADING YOUR LINKEDIN ACCOUNTStep 12To upgrade your LinkedInaccount and get addedfeatures, click on the‘Account & Settings’button on the upper rightcorner of your profile,(Just like Step11), andclick on ‘Account’ optionfrom the drop down menu.Every new account is registered as a ‘Basic’ account. Thus, the Upgrade feature gives youmultiple additional options and features (at an additional cost).Choose the option that suits best according to your or your company/business needs.25

15) IMPORTING/DOWNLOADING YOUR LINKEDIN RESUMEStep 15To download/Print a PDFversion of your resume, go toyour profile and click thedrop-down arrow right next tothe ‘Edit Profile’ button, andselect the ‘Export to PDF’button to download yourresume.This concludes our basic LinkedIn Tutorial.For more info, go to http://help.linkedin.com/app/home26

Twitter TutorialWhat is Twitter?Twitter is an excellent tool for letting people what you are up to. It allows youto post status updates of up to one hundred and forty (140) characters that willbe instantly broadcasted to people who have decided to follow you. This iscalled a tweet and it is the core foundation on which Twitter was founded.27

1) Getting StartedGo to www.Twitter.com, andsignup for a new account. Enteryour Full name, email address,and create a password.When creating a business account, use the appropriate names.2) Creating an AccountOn the new window that opensup, enter your Full Name, Emailaddress, and password again.Then, choose a Username.P.S-When creating a businessprofile, create a usernameappropriate and in sync with thename of your company orbusiness.28

3) Setting Up an AccountOnce you are on your Profilepage, click on the “Next” buttonand follow the instructions.4) Searching for People and OrganizationsSearch for people basedon username or just theirname, and click the“Follow” button to followthem.(Continued)29

As you start following people,their tweets (posts) will startappearing in your timeline.Now, search for contacts fromthe options available.30

5) Uploading a Profile PhotoAdd character to your profile.Upload a profile picture andadd a bio.6) Confirming your accountOnce you’re on your homepage,you will see a notification on thetop of the page. Go to the emailaccount that you used to createthis profile, and confirm it in theemail from twitter.31

7) Account SettingsOn the top right corner, click onthe “Settings” button and select“Settings”32

8) Editing Your ProfileIn the Settings menu, click on the“Edit your profile” option. Here,you can edit your profile picture,header, name, bio, and add/editother info.Click on this button to connectyour twitter with your Facebookaccount and follow theinstructions.33

On the upper right hand cornerof your homepage, Click on the7) Making a Tweekfeather icon to compose a tweet.You can add text and uploadpictures in your tweet.Click on ‘Tweet’ to post yourtweet.You can use hashtags to enhance your tweet. A hashtag is a pound sign (#) followed by a singleword or a set of words without at space. For example, at the time of writing one of the mostpopular hashtags on Twitter is #PeoplesChoice. Having a hashtag throws your tweet into acategory that users can search for.This concludes out basic Twitter Tutorial.For more info, go to https://support.twitter.com/34

Instagram TutorialWhat is Instagram?Instagram is a photo and video sharing service thatallows you to share photos and videos that you havetaken. It also allows you to edit those photos andvideos.35

1) Getting StartedLoginPress the “Sign In” button tosign in. Then simply enterusername and password. Andthen press “Sign In” button.After logged in, the defaultsetting is automatically login.And then you do not have torepeatedly enter your accountpassword.36

PostingTo post a picture, press the middlebutton that looks like a camera.There will be three options for youto choose. (The default setting istaking a picture.) The left most button is to uploadpictures. The middle button is to take apicture. The right most button is to take avideo.37

Upload PicturesChoose an existing pictures fromyour gallery. Since Instagramonly accept square shape pictures,using those four dots to adjust thesize of square. Also, press andhold the square to move it. Whenyou finish adjusting, press the topright corner button for next step.If you change your mind, pressthe top left corner button tocancel.Take PicturePress the middle bottom button(blue) to take a picture. Therefour functionalities buttons on thetop bar - cancel, change camera,turn on/off flash light, and turnon/off grid. You can switch toupload pictures and take video bypressing the buttons at thebottom.Take VideoPress and hold the middle bottombutton (red) to record a video.There three functionalitiesbuttons on the top bar – cancel,change camera, and go to nextstep. You can switch to takepicture and upload pictures bypressing the buttons at thebottom.38

Editing PicturesYou can make use ofseveral functionalities toedit your pictures. Youcan apply different filter,add a boarder, add focusblur, add lux, and rotatethe image. After editing,press the top right cornerbutton for next step.Editing VideosYou can record a video withdifferent segments. To dothis, simply release the redbutton. Record again whenyou are ready for next scene.You can also delete thesegments. After you finishedrecording, you can apply afilter on the video. As well,you can go back to previousstep to delete or record video39

Ready to ShareAfter you finished editingpicture/video, you are ready toshare it to everyone. Before youshare, you can add a caption, tagpeople, add to photo map, or shareit on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr,Foursquare, or Flickr. Press thegreen tick button on the top toshare.40

Editing Profile/PreferenceYou can edit your profile andset up preferences. You canlog out by going to preferenceand scrolling down.41

BLOGGER TUTORIALBlogger is a free tool to create blogs and create online journals. It is a serviceprovided by Google and can be used to create time stamped public, private ormulti-user posts. One can add various gadgets to their blog page such as acalendar, Twitter and Facebook feeds, pictures, videos etc.42

Step 1: Logging into your Blogger ProfileTo access your blogger account, you need to possess a Gmail account or a Google account. Ifnot, make a Google account by going here.Once you have a Google username and password, Go to www.Blogger.com and sign in to yourblogger account. Then, make a personal URL and Title for your blog.Step2: Getting Startedi) DashboardOnce you log in to your Blogger account, you see your dashboard. This is where you see yourposts, notifications and other menus.To go to your ‘PostList’, Click on thebutton right next tothe yellow pencil,and select optionsfrom the drop downmenu.43

Overview: By clicking on ‘Overview’, you can see your Blog’s activities, tips, news andnotifications etc.Posts: By clicking on ‘Posts’, you can see a timeline of all your blog posts, the number of viewson every blog, comments, drafts, and other notifications.44

Template: By clicking on ‘Template”, you can customize a blog to a design that suits yourtaste/needs, and if you have some serious programming background, even add/edit the HTMLcode for the blog.Once you are donecustomizing, click the‘Customize’ button tosave the settings.Layout: By clicking the ‘Layout’ button, you can add/edit the general layout of your blog page.45

ii) Adding Gadgets to your blogOn the Gadgets tab, click on the ‘Add a Gadget’ button and a new window will pop-up. Thereare about 28 different gadgets to choose from.Once you are done addingGadgets, click on the ‘SaveArrangement’ buttonFrom this menu, you can select and add gadgets such as a Calendar, Translate, Search Box, RSSFeed etc.46

iii) Security and PrivacyFrom the same drop down list, click on ‘Settings’ and the Basic settings page will pop-up.A blogger page is automatically set to ‘Public’ and can be edited by clicking Edit.On this page, you can edit the Title and description of your blog, add/edit Blog Authors;especially when it is a corporate account being run by multiple users, and change permissionsettings. For every change made on this page, Blogger will ask you to prove your identity, sokeep your password handy!47

Step3: Writing a Blog PostTo write a post, click on the ‘Yellow Pencil’ on your Dashboard.On this page, you can:Make a Post, Add a Title, Text with different Fonts, Add Links, Images, & Videosetc.Once you are done making a post, Click on ‘Preview’ to seewhat your blog post will look like, and if required, makecorrections.Then, press ‘Publish’ to publish your post.This concludes our Basic Blogger tutorial.For more Info, go to https://support.google.com/blogger/?hl en#topic 333924348
