Chartered August 1, 1916 Volume 32, No. 32 March 19, 2018The Rotary Club of Reno meets at Harrah’s Reno at Noon on MondayMONDAY’S PROGRAMKatie MoralesSupporting Education of HomelessChildren and YouthKatie Morales was bornand raised in Reno. Sheearned a bachelor’s degree from University Nevada Reno in Human Development Family Studies.Katie has been an advocate for the educationalrights of homeless students for the last 10years. She oversees theimplementation of the federal McKinney-VentoAct and Foster program in Washoe County SchoolDistrict, which identifies and provides resources toover 3,600 students experiencing homelessnessand/or Foster care. She has worked closely withWashoe County and the State to improve the educational outcomes for children and youth inhomeless situations.The Rotary club of Reno has provided a 7,500community service grant to the Children in Transition (CIT) program put in place to satisfy the requirements of the McKinney-Vento Act (non-funded federal mandate). The CIT program includes avariety of support strategies focused on ensuringhomeless students are provided with stability, security, and a safe place to learn. The target population is birth through 12th grade and CIT Homeless Liaisons work with schools and families toidentify and address students’ basic needs such asshelter, food, clothing, transportation and healthcare.Homeless students may or may not have parents,a temporary location is not unusual as homelessstudents frequently move around the communityoften changing schools, and a number of students are from the Record Street homeless center.Reno Rotary’s assistance supports the after schooltutoring conducted at the Bresson Boys and GirlsClub and transportation after the tutoring sessions. Reno Rotary also secured a 2,000 districtservice grant to provide clothing for students.
