Itsmembers work in such diverse areas as education, research and development laboratories, government,power plant operations, medical and isotope applications, and engineering design and services. The ANSdisplay has hands-on demonstrations for radiation detection, a model fuel bundle for a nuclear reactor, awork sheet to calculate your daily exposure to radiation, information about careers, and much more. Room 114Using such engineering marvels as the Trump Tower Chicago and the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa,the engineering principles of structures will be discovered. An engineer’s tools of the trade such as the amazing strength of shapes, structural materials, wind engineering and sustainability will be uncovered in thisinteractive and educational program. A hands-on shake table will allow select students to construct theirown LEGO Skyscraper and test it to destruction under a simulated earthquake. Prizes will be given to thosewho construct an “earthquake resistant” structure!Presentation Times — 11:30 AM, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 PMAmerican Society of Civil Engineers-GI (ASCE-GI) . 1st Floor, North HallGeotechnical Engineering is the study of engineering properties of soil and rock. It involves geology, physics,mechanics, chemistry and history/experience. The goal of the Chicago Geo-Institute Chapter today is to provide an understanding of the interaction of soil and rock and structures, including buildings, tunnels, pipelines, roads and bridges. The Geo-Institute (G-I) is a specialty membership organization focused on geoprofessionals and the geo-industry. It is one of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ eight specialty Institutes. Room 218No parent ever wants to live through the nightmare of having a child missing. Parents can be prepared forthe unthinkable with an identification packet put together by IL CHIP. The Freemasons of Illinois provideFREE of charge to parents a complete child identification package that can be taken home or carried with thefamily on vacation. The information, most of which is contained on a flash drive, is compact and totallyprivate. The only item IL CHIP keeps is the parental permission form.Parents will receive: Color photo that records image and height and is digitized on a convenient flash drive that can easily becirculated by police to the media and distributed across the state within an hour via Illinois’ Amber Alertprogram. DNA Sample taken through a saliva cheek swab is the latest tool in the scientific arsenal to makepositive IDs of lost children. Fingerprints are the oldest form of positive identification since they are unique to every person. Recorded video interview captures appearance, speech patterns, personal characteristics,and mannerisms.ZOOM Into Engineering . 2nd Floor, AtriumBased on the PBS television series, ZOOM , the activities at ZOOM Into Engineering introduce students toscience and technology through hands-on projects that demonstrate engineering principles. Volunteers fromISPE-DuKane and ASCE are providing assistance for this activity.
