TR I nIs t al- l i nTg t hRe C oOl l a rNS t r Ia p CSINSTALLING THE COLLAR STRAPYour Remote Trainer is shipped with the receiverseparate from the collar strap. Install the strap as shownin the illustrations. On multi-dog units, be sure to install the correct color strapon each receiver. Use the colored strap that matches thecolored dot on the receiver.Slide the correct color strap through one side of the receiver, then through the other side. Snug the strap firmly against thesurface of the receiver. Position the buckle where it is convenientfor the size of your dog's neck.Installing the Collar StrapPage 7

TR I nIs t al- l i nTg t hRe C oOl l a rNS t r Ia p CSYou can easily adjust the strap for different sized necks bysliding the receiver along the strap. If the strap is too long foryour dog, you can cut off excess length. Leave enough lengthto go through the D-ring (see “Fitting the Collar on the Dog”page 13).You may also use any collar strap that fits the receiver.Page 8Remote Trainer

T SRe l e cI ti n-g CTo n tRact OP oi nNt L eIn g tChSSELECTING CONTACT POINT LENGTH(Does Not Apply to Classic 70)Your Remote Trainer comes with two sets of contactpoints – long and short. The shorter points are installed in the unit at the factory andare suitable for most coat lengths. For dogs with especiallylong hair or thick undercoats, the long contact points willgive the best possible contact. To change the contact points, always use the small wrenchsupplied with your Remote Trainer. Avoid using tools whichmay cause you to over-tighten the contact points.Periodically check contact points for tightness.Insert screw-in contact points as shown and only tighten withthe small wrench supplied with the Remote Trainer. Do notover-tighten. Check contact points periodically for tightness.Selecting Contact Point LengthPage 9

Tr nRTui n g tIh e- R eTm o tRe TrOai n eNr O nI a nCd OSf fTURNING THE REMOTE TRAINER ON AND OFFThe Remote Trainer consists of a hand-held transmitter anda radio receiver on the dog’s collar. The collar must be turnedon before it can receive signals from the transmitter. Betweentraining sessions, you should turn the collar off to savebattery life.To turn the Remote Trainer collar on, set the transmitterintensity knob to the number 0 (zero). Hold the transmitterclose to the collar (any distance between 2 and 10 feet). Holddown any transmitter button as you watch the light on thefront of the receiver. When the light begins flashing red, thecollar is turned on and capable of receiving signals from thetransmitter. This process takes about 5 seconds.Note that it takes about 20 seconds after turn-on beforethe collar can apply stimulation. When the intensity knob is onzero, pressing any transmitterbutton turns the collar on or off.Move the knob to a numberother than zero for training. When the collar light blinksred, the collar is turned on.Turning the Remote Trainer On and OffPage 11

Tr nRN O nI a nCd OSf fTui n g tIh e- R eTm o tRe TrOa i n erTo turn the collar off, repeat this process. The collar lightwill make one long red flash to indicate that the collar isnow turned off. After turning on the collar, it is a good idea to move theintensity knob to a number other than 0 (zero) so you don'taccidentally turn the collar off when correcting the dog forthe first time. However, at times when your transmittermight be accidentally bumped against objects during use, youcan leave the intensity knob turned to 0 (zero) to prevent anypossibility of an unwanted stimulation.Turning the Remote Trainer On and Off(1) Hold transmitter close to collar (up to 10 feet apart)(2) Set transmitter intensity knob on zero.(3) Hold any transmitter button down for about 5 seconds.(4) Watch collar light for confirming signal.(5) Turn intensity knob to a number other than zerofor training. You can also turn a collar off by placing it on its charger. Thisfeature allows you to turn a collar off if you cannot find itstransmitter or the transmitter batteries have run down.Page 12Remote Trainer

TRF it tIi n g- t hTe C oRl l a rOo n Nt h e ID ogCSFITTING THE COLLAR ON THE DOGPlace the collar strap in the middle of the dog’s neck. The receiver should be on the underside of his neck.Place the receiver so the light is facing forward (towardsthe dog’s nose).Tighten the buckle by holding it with two fingers as youpull the strap snug. Do not put any fingers under thestrap as you tighten it. Make it snug, Remote Trainersneed to be snug to work properly. A loose collar cancause inconsistent stimulation. To tighten the collar on thedog, hold the buckle as shownand draw the strap snug.Remote Trainers need to besnug for consistent stimulation.Always slip thefree end of thecollar strapthrough the D-ring.When using theBeaglerXL, be sureto slip the free endof the strap throughboth sides ofthe buckle.Fitting the Collar on the DogPage 13

TRF i t tIi n g- t hTe C oRl l a rOo n Nt h e ID ogCSYou can easily adjust the strap for different sized necks bysliding the receiver along the strap. If the collar strap is toolong for your dog, you can cut off excess strap length. Leaveenough length to go through the D-ring with about 3inches to spare. Please note that Remote Trainers are not designed to beworn continuously by a dog. To prevent irritation caused byrubbing, remove the collar for at least eight hours out of every24 hour period. See the important message about avoidingskin irritation on page 26.Page 14Remote Trainer

TRIS e -t t i nTg t hRe I nOt e n Nsi t y ICSSETTING THE INTENSITYYour Remote Trainer can give corrections at different intensitylevels, so you can match the level of correction to both thetraining situation and your dog’s temperament. There are two ways to adjust intensity level while training. One way is to use the intensity knob on the top of thetransmitter, as explained in this section. All Tri-TronicsRemote Trainers give you this method of adjustingstimulation intensity. The other way is to use the transmitter buttons, as explainedon page 16. This method does not apply to those modelswhich have only one transmitter button (Classic 70 andTrashbreaker Ultra XL).The transmitter intensity knob gives you a choice of 6intensities (5 levels of intensity on the Classic 70).Intensity Knob LevelsLevel 0: Transmitter is off – no stimulation.Pressing a button activates collar toreceive signalsLevel 1: Very low intensityLevel 2: Low intensityLevel 3: Medium intensityLevel 4: Medium-high intensityLevel 5: High intensityLevel 6: Very high intensity (not available on the Classic 70)When increasing or decreasing intensity using the intensityknob, be sure you have released the stimulation buttons,or your new intensity selection will not take effect. If you are not experienced at using Remote Trainers, there areintensity selection tips in the training booklet and video thatcame with your Remote Trainer.Setting the IntensityPage 15

T URs i n gI t h- e STt i mRu l aOt i o nNB u It t oCns SUSING THE STIMULATION BUTTONSTri-Tronics Remote Trainers offer two types of stimulation,“continuous” and “momentary” (Classic 70 and TrashbreakerUltraXL offer only continuous stimulation).Continuous StimulationThe timing of continuous stimulation is controlled bythe trainer. Continuous stimulation stays on while thetransmitter button is pressed, up to the “time out” period, described below.Momentary StimulationThe timing of momentary stimulation is pre-set. Momentarystimulation stays on only very briefly, no matter how long thebutton is pressed. To produce a second momentary correction, press the button again. To produce a series of momentarycorrections, press the button for each correction.Instantly Selectable IntensityMost Tri-Tronics Remote Trainer models have more than onestimulation button. This feature allows the trainer to chooseinstantly among low, medium, and high stimulation. Thisselection feature applies to either continuous or momentarystimulation, or to both, depending on the model.Being able to select low, medium, or high stimulation bytouch, using buttons, means that you do not need to look atthe transmitter when you select intensity levels – you cankeep your eyes on the dog at all times. It also means thatintensity changes are instantaneous. These features are anadvantage in many training situations.Time-out PeriodThe time-out period is about 9 seconds for all models exceptthe BeaglerXL. The time-out period on the BeaglerXL is about 4seconds (“extended stimulation”). If the collar times out, release the button briefly to restore collar function.Page 16Remote Trainer

The chart on pages 4 and 5 showswhich Remote Trainer models include this feature. Themeaning of the tone is determined by your dog’s training. It can mean a particular command, a warning, praise, etc.The training materials that came with your Remote Trainerdescribe the use of this feature in more detail.Tone ButtonThe transmitter light is also a push-button. To activate thetone, press this button. The intensity knob must be on anumber other than 0 (zero) for the tone to work. If theintensity knob is on 0 (zero), pressing the tone buttonturns the collar on and off (page 11).On selected modelsthe light on top ofthe transmitter is apush-button thatoperates the toneor the Beeper.USING THE BEEPER (Upland SpecialXL Models Only)Pressing the button on the top of the transmitter turns theBeeper on or off at a distance. The intensity knob must beon a number other than 0 (zero) for the button to operatethe Beeper. If the intensity knob is on 0 (zero), pressing thisbutton turns the collar on and off (page 11). For completeinformation about using the Beeper that comes with theUpland SpecialXL, see the separate Beeper manual includedwith those models.Page 18Remote Trainer

TRIB- at Tt e r y RC h aOr g i nNgICSBATTERY CHARGINGWhen to RechargeWhen the light on either the collar or transmitter blinksrapidly, you need to recharge it soon. The amount of timethat batteries have left after the low battery indicator comeson depends on how heavily you use your Remote Trainerduring training, the temperature (less time remains duringcold weather), and other factors. After you see the low batteryindicator on the collar, you will normally be able to completeyour training session. After you see the low battery indicatoron the transmitter, you will have about two hours left. How to ChargeMake sure there is no moisture in the collar charging jack whenyou attach the charger because moisture can interfere withproper charging. Charge batteries at room temperature. Do notcharge at temperatures below freezing. Remember that it takesseveral hours for cold batteries to come up to room temperature.Lift the protection covers from the charging jacks. Plug thecharger into the wall outlet, then insert the correct chargingplug into the collar or transmitter jack. The lights will glowred to indicate that current is flowing. The transmitter lightmay dim after some time on the charger; this is normal anddoes not indicate a malfunction. When you are finishedcharging, unplug the lead from the device you are chargingbefore disconnecting the charger from the wall.Transmitter charger andcharging jackBattery ChargingCollar chargerand charging jackPage 21

TRIB- a t Tt er y RC h aOr g i nNgICSReinstall the protection caps on the collar and transmitterjacks to keep dirt, debris, and water out of the charging jacks.Be sure you seat the collar jack cover down firmly so thatit is level with the surface of the collar, as shown in theillustration. Keeping the charging jacks clean and dry ensuresthat your chargers make good contact. If the collar chargingjack becomes dirty, clean it as described in the section, “Careand Cleaning” (page 24). If either jack protection cap becomeslost or damaged call our Customer Service Department fora replacement.Protection capfitted properlyProtection cap not fittedproperly. Moisture and debriscan enter charging jack.Use only the correct Tri-Tronics chargers to charge yourRemote Trainer. Using the wrong type of charger may damagebatteries or the unit itself. Do not charge batteries that are notinstalled in a Remote Trainer.Charging TimeCharge your Remote Trainer for at least 14 hours. It's okayto use your Remote Trainer before the 14 hours are up; itwill function normally. A 14 hour charge ensures fullbattery capacity.Page 22Remote Trainer

TRIB- at Tt e r y RC h aOr g i nNgICSTo get maximum life from your collar batteries, we recommendthat you don't charge for more than 20 hours at a time.Occasionally exceeding the 20 hour limit will not harm thefunctioning of your batteries. However, this product is notintended to be left on a charger indefinitely.Storing a Remote TrainerBefore storing your Remote Trainer for an extended period, charge it for 14 hours. Thereafter, charge every two monthswhile the unit is in storage, and charge for 14 hours beforefirst use.Replacing the BatteriesBoth the transmitter and collar have user-replaceable NickelMetal Hydride (NiMH) batteries. TRI-P r oTd u cRt S aOf e t NyICSPRODUCT SAFETYImportant: Your dog should be able to wear the collarcomfortably for several hours at a time. The collar is notdesigned, however, to be worn continuously. To preventirritation caused by rubbing, remove the collar for at leasteight hours out of every 24 hour period. Also, remotetraining collars are designed to be worn snug, and acollar that is worn too loose can contribute to skinirritation. Take a few moments each day to inspectthe dog’s neck for signs of redness or irritation causedby such rubbing. If signs of skin irritation appear, temporarily discontinue use of the Remote Trainer.Scientific animal safety studies have been designed andconducted for Tri-Tronics by veterinarians and physiologistsat a major university. The scientific investigations involvedparameters of electrical stimulation that are similar tothose in your Remote Trainer. The scientific studiestested for possible cardiopulmonary and epidermal effectsof Tri-Tronics electrical stimulation applied to the ventralsurface of the neck of healthy dogs. These studies foundno clinically significant changes in electrocardiograms, blood pressures, or properties of the skin underlying thecontact points.Tri-Tronics Remote Trainers have two independent circuitsthat are designed to inhibit excessive electrical stimulation. One is located in the transmitter, the other is in the collar.Like all other parts of our products, these safety circuitsreceive special attention in Tri-Tronics environmental, reliability, and quality analysis.Page 26Remote Trainer
