Fritz will be on vacation the week of November 2nd.Rev. Warner Bailey will be in the pulpit on Youth Sunday,November 9.Judi Greathouse, Office Administrator, will also take vacation the week of November 2. The office will be in the finehands of our trained volunteers! The next Sentinel newsletter will be published on Monday,November 17.Sentinel Goes Bi-WeeklyAfter a lot of thought and prayer, it has been decided that theSentinel will move from being a weekly newsletter to a biweekly one. This is in part to cut down on work time as weadjust to a new workload with reduced staff, but in truth thishas been something we’ve thought about for some time. With our weekly insert, Invitations, Beth’s e-newsletterabout CE events, the website, www.ststephen-pcusa.com, myoccasional newsletter, and our Facebook page, it seems thatthere are multiple print and media platforms for members toget up-to-date news and information. As a general rule, thenews in the Sentinel changes little week to week, so readersshouldn’t experience any loss of information. A bi-weeklySentinel cuts down staff stress, redundancy, and cost.Grace and peace,FritzNew 2015 Flower Chart Posted! The new flower chart has been posted on the bulletin boardoutside of the church office. Please stop by and sign yourname on the your special dates! Celebrate a birthday or ananniversary by dedicating flowers to your loved ones.

November 3, 2014Page 2Moment for Mission, Sunday, October 26, 2014written by Mike WittGood morning church family,My name is Mike Witt and my wife Mary and I have been members here at St. Stephen for almost a year now.Because Mary and I both have such a passion for mission work, joining the St. Stephen family was an easydecision. When asked to be a member of this year’s Stewardship committee, it was an even easier decision. The main reason is like I said, mission work. It just so happens that mission’s and stewardship are blood relatives .you cannot have one without the other. It is also two of the areas in the bible in which Christ himself speaks the most of. The grace of Christ should bethe reason and motivation in our giving. The bible tells us “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might becomerich”. When we give, it is our acknowledgement to the grace of God in our lives. The greatest passage on giving in all scripture ends not with “congratulations for your generosity” but “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” (2 Cor 9:15).Jesus commands us to give. But I often wonder, as Christians, if one of the biggest obstacles to giving is thatwe somehow lose focus and forget that earth is not our permanent home. And where we choose to store ourtreasures depends largely in where we think our home is. But in the book of Philippians, the bible is clear thatour “citizenship is in heaven”. So we give many times for things needed now, but we also give for things wecannot or may not see the fruits of if ever. Giving for those that Christ himself calls “the least of these”, givingfor missions so that others may see Christ in us. Giving with the trust and hope that thru our actions someone’sfaith may be strengthened. Giving so that repairs to our church home are reflective of those we would nevertolerate in our own homes. Giving to people because they matter to us, because they matter to God.When I was younger I use to struggle with stewardship and tithing. I gave but I didn’t want to give it all. Thenone day it hit me, it’s not mine to begin with. And when I keep it I begin to think I own it. But when I startedgiving the way I should, it took the focus off me and put it on God. Giving dethrones me and exalts him, itconfirms his lordship.I love the song titled “Thank you for giving to the Lord”. It is a song about meeting people in heaven whowhose lives were changed from our giving on earth. It always makes me think about the movie “SchindlersList.” Many if not most of you have seen it. The story of Oscar Schindler, a very wealthy German man whopersuaded the Nazis that he needed Jews to work in his factory. But he was really just saving their lives. At theend of the movie, there’s a somber scene where Oscar looks at his fine car and his gold pin and begins to regretthat he didn’t give more of his money and possessions to save more lives. In the end he longed for a chance togo back and make better choices.
