Theyare:Chemical Inventory,Written Program,Labels,Material Safety Data Sheets, andTraining.LabelsNew Employee OrientationThe first element of the HazardCommunication Standard is foremployers to develop inventories of allthe hazardous chemicals they have attheir worksite. Each Division andSection is responsible for developingchemical inventories for theirworkplaces.

Identity the product’product’s name Provide any hazard warnings Give the Manufactures nameand addressTransfer/Secondary Containers Identity the product’product’s name Provide any hazard warningsLabels SHALL NOT be removed or defacedFermilabIn addition to the written program theHazard Communication Standardrequires that manufacturer’s properlylabel and provide Material Safety DataSheets (MSDSs) for each hazardousproduct. Let’s take a moment and focuson these two elements.LabelsFermilabSlide 8The second element mandatesemployers to evaluate the hazards of thechemicals they use and communicatethis information to their employees. Wehave incorporated this requirement intothe Fermilab ES&H Manual. This isour written Hazard CommunicationProgram. The Written Programdescribes how the HazCom program hasbeen implemented at Fermilab.New Employee OrientationIdentity the product’s name,Provide any hazard warnings, andGive the Manufactures name andaddress.If you are transferring a material into amore user friendly container thesecondary container must be labeledwith the product name and any hazardwarnings.Never remove or deface a label oncontainers in use.Labels must be removed at disposal

MSDSs provide asummary of important physical andhealth hazard information. MSDSsshould be reviewed for all new productsprior to usage and also referenced andincluded in the creation of workplaceHazard Analyses. Finally, they must bemade available. What does availablemean? Show next overhead.OSHA interprets this to mean thatMSDSs must be maintained andaccessible to any employee during hisor her work shift. At Fermilab, MSDSsare available electronically.

Slide 11MSDS SearchesLocations Satellite MSDS Locations Master MSDS LocationFermilabNew Employee OrientationSome departments still maintain papercopies of their MSDSs. These locationsmay not have computer access or maybe at a remote jobsite. Regardless, acopy of the MSDS is forwarded to theESH Section for entry into Fermilab’sMSDS database.The master MSDS database is locatedon the ESH website and can be viewedthrough the Quick Links section.Trainer performs following taskClick on Master MSDS Location andshow MSDS database on ESH websiteand conduct several searches:1.)
