Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperCleanUddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperCleanCONSISTENT TOOL PERFORMANCE — LONG AND RELIABLE TOOL LIFEWith an increased demand for just in time deliveries (JIT) and shorterlead time, it is of utmost importance that the tool life is predictable with along and reliable performance. This is also a prerequisite to reduce, yourdown time, cost for tool maintenance and optimize machine utilization. This gives an optimal tooling economy and a competitive productioncost.Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean properties offer very goodcombination of wear resistance and ductility. This makes it possible forconsistent tool performance for demanding cold work applications suchas blanking and forming of austenitic stainless steel and Advanced HighStrength Steel (AHSS) where a combination of abrasive, adhesive ormixed wear resistance is needed in combination with resistance tochipping and cracking.MACHINABILITYThe tool making process is a very important link in the tooling sequence. In order to achieve a long and reliable tool performance the quality of thetool in terms of surface finish is extremely important. Uddeholm Vanadis4 Extra SuperClean offers a very good machinability and grindabilitycompared to other high alloyed PM- tool steel, giving the best conditionsfor an excellent tool quality. This is the result of the well balanced chemistry and the SuperClean production route. Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperCleanCRITICAL TOOL STEELPARAMETERSGENERALFOR GOOD TOOL PERFORMANCEUddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean is achromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloyedsteel which is characterized by: Correct hardness for the application Very good ductility High wear resistance High abrasive-adhesive wear resistance High ductility High compressive strengthHigh wear resistance is often associated withlow ductility and vice-versa. However, in manycases for optimal tool performance both highwear resistance and ductility are essential.Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean is apowder metallurgical cold work tool steeloffering an extremely good combination ofwear resistance and ductility for high performance tools.FOR TOOLMAKING Good dimensional stability during heattreatment and in service Very good through-hardening properties Good temper back resistance Good machinability and grindabilityTypicalanalysis %C1.4Si0.4Mn0.4Cr4.7Mo3.5DeliveryconditionSoft annealed to approx. 230 HBColour codeGreen/white with a black line acrossV3.7 Machinability Heat treatment Dimensional stability during heat treatmentToolmaking with highly alloyed tool steel hastraditionally created problems with machiningand heat treatment when compared with loweralloyed grades, this then often leads toincreased toolmaking costs.Due to our carefully balanced alloying andthe powder metallurgical manufacturing process, Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperCleanhas better machinability than the tool steelgrade AISI D2.One major advantage with UddeholmVanadis 4 Extra SuperClean is that the dimensional stability after hardening and temperingis much better than for all known high performance cold work tool steel. This means, forexample, that Uddeholm Vanadis 4 ExtraSuperClean is a tool steel which is verysuitable for CVD coating.APPLICATIONSUddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean isespecially suitable for applications whereadhesive wear and/or chipping are thedominating failure mechanisms, i.e. with soft/adherent materials such as austenitic stainless steel, mild steel, copper, aluminium, etc. as work material with thicker work material high strength work materialsUddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean ishowever also very suitable for blanking andforming of Advanced High Strength Steels, these materials place high demands on thetool steel regarding abrasive wear resistanceand ductility.Examples: Blanking and forming Fine blanking Cold extrusion tooling Powder pressing Deep drawing Knives Substrate steel for surface coating3

Temper at least twice withintermediate cooling to room temperature. For highest dimensional stability and ductility, a minimum temperature of 540 C (1000 F)and three tempers is strongly recommended.Tempering at a lower temperature than540 C (1000 F) may increase the hardnessand compressive strength to some extent butalso impair cracking resistance and dimensional stability. However, if lowering thetempering temperature, do not temper below520 C (970 F).When tempering twice the minimum holdingtime at temperature is 2 hours. When tempering three times the minimum holding time is1 hour.66Retained austenite %641020 C (1870 F)62603558980 C (1795 F)30562554940 C (1725 F)20521550Retained austenite1020 C (1870 F)48105464007504508405009305501020600 C1110 FTempering temperature (2h 2h)Retained austenite %Hardness HRC661150 C (2100 F)6462601100 C (2010 F)5830561060 C (1940 F)54Retained austenite1100 C (2010 F)504846400750151054508405009305501020Tempering temperature (2h 2h)6252052The tempering curves, in the two graphs, are obtained afterheat treatment of samples with a size of 15 x 15 x 40 mm,cooling in forced air. Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperCleanSURFACE TREATMENTMACHINABILITYSome cold work tool steel are given a surfacetreatment in order to reduce friction andincrease wear resistance. The most commonlyused treatments are nitriding and surfacecoating with wear resistant layers producedvia PVD and CVD.The high hardness and toughness togetherwith a good dimensional stability makesUddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean idealas a substrate steel for various surface coatings.Relative machinability and grindability forAISI D2, PM 23 and Uddeholm Vanadis 4Extra SuperClean. High value indicates goodmachinability/grindability.NITRIDINGNitriding gives a hard surface layer that isresistant to wear and erosion.Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean isnormally high temperature tempered at around540 C (1000 F). This means that the nitridingtemperature used should not exceed 525 C(980 F). Ion nitriding at a temperature belowthe tempering temperature used is preferred. The surface hardness after nitriding is approximately 1150 HV0,2 kg.The thickness of the layer should be chosento suit the application in question. For blanking and punching the recommended case depth is 10–20 µm and forforming tools it can be up to max. 30 µm.PVDPhysical vapour deposition, PVD, is a methodof applying a wear resistant coating at temperatures between 200–500 C (390–930 F).CVDChemical vapour deposition, CVD, is used forapplying wear resistant surface coatings at atemperature of around 1000 C (1830 F). It isrecommended that the tools should beseparately hardened and tempered in avacuum furnace after surface treatment.Relative machinability/grindability, (1 worse 5 best)54321AISI D2PM 23Vanadis 4 ExtraSuperCleanMACHININGRECOMMENDATIONSThe cutting data below are to be consideredas guiding values which must be adapted toexisting local conditions. The recommendations, in following tables, are valid for Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean in soft annealed condition to 230 HB.TURNINGCutting dataparametersCutting speed (vc)m/min.f.p.m.Feed (f)mm/revi.p.r.Turning with .05–0.30.008–0.016 0.002–0.008 0.002–0.012Depth of cut 30.02–0.08CarbidedesignationISOK20*, P20*or cermet*K15*, P15*or cermet*–* Use a wear resistance CVD-coating8Turningwith HSSFine turning
