UDDEHOLM VANCRON 40

UDDEHOLM VANCRON 40Uddeholm Vancron 40 is a nitrided powder tool steel, which means that a“surface coating” is already integrated into the finished tooling material. Theresult is a tool surface with very low friction that reduces galling or stickingof the material.Uddeholm Vancron 40 offers the possibility of eliminating time- and cost-consuming surface coatings like CVD, PVD or TD. This is achieved already in the manufacturing process of Uddeholm Vancron 40 by introducing an extra nitriding operation.Benefits for the tool user include improved and consistent quality of the manufactured parts, especially regarding the surfaces. More reliable delivery time andhigher utilization of the production equipment are also benefits, with fewerdisturbances and interruptions in production. Further improvements includesimplified maintenance, which can often be made in-house as no surface coatingis required; and as well, total tool life is increased. The tool maker can produce a high quality tool that does not require any surfacecoating, which means a shorter delivery time and freedom to make adjustmentsafter the heat treatment. In total this means that the product quality will be uniform from the first partproduced to the last and that a tool manufactured in Uddeholm Vancron 40 willmake it easier for you to keep your promises! This information is based on our present state of knowledge and is intended to provide generalnotes on our products and their uses. UDDEHOLM VANCRON 40Critical tool steelpropertiesFor good tool performanceIn many cold work applications tools aresurface coated in order to prevent galling andadhesive wear.Furthermore it is important to have thecorrect hardness for the applications as well asa sufficient ductility and toughness in order toprevent premature failure due to chipping/crack formation.Uddeholm Vancron 40 is a nitrided powdermetallurgical tool steel offering an excellentcombination of galling resistance and adhesivewear resistance. For tool making MachinabilityHeat treatmentGrindingDimensional stability in heat treatmentSurface treatmentTool making with highly alloyed tool steelsmeans that machining and heat treatment areoften more of a problem than with the loweralloy grades. This can, of course, raise the costof tool making. The powder manufacturing route used forUddeholm Vancron 40 means that its machinability is superior to that of similar conventionally produced grades and some highlyalloyed cold work tool steels. The dimensional stability of UddeholmVancron 40 in heat treatment is good andpredictable compared to conventionallyproduced high alloy steels.Uddeholm Vancron 40 is designed to beused without surface coating as it contains ahigh amount of low friction vanadium richnitrides in the matrix.ApplicationsUddeholm Vancron 40 is a cold work toolsteel with an excellent galling/adhesive wearprofile, which makes the steel ideal for severeproduction conditions and/or long run production in applications where surface coated toolsteel is needed. The work materials in theseapplications are often soft/adherent materialssuch as austenitic and ferritic stainless steel, mild steel, copper, aluminium, etc.Uddeholm Vancron 40 should be used incold work applications where the predominantfailure mechanisms are adhesive wear or galling.Typical applications are: Blanking and forming Cold extrusion Deep drawing Powder pressingGeneralUddeholm Vancron 40 is a Cr-Mo-W-V-Nalloyed cold work tool steel, which is characterized by Very high adhesive wear resistance Very high galling resistance Good chipping and cracking resistance High compressive strength Good through hardening properties Good dimensional stability in hardening Very good resistance to tempering back Good WEDM propertiesTypicalanalysis fication NoneDeliveryconditionSoft annealed to approx. 300 HBColourcodeGold/ Dark blue3

Cool slowly to 500 C(930 F), then freely in air.HardeningThe hardenability for Uddeholm Vancron 40 isequivalent to Uddeholm Vanadis 23, whichensures good through hardening properties atquenching in salt bath or gas quenching invacuum furnace.Pre-heating in two stages: 600–650 C (1110–1200 F) and 850–900 C (1560–1650 F).Austenitizing temperature: 1000–1100 C (1830–2010 F) normally 1020 C (1870 F).Holding time: 30 minutes (10 minutes at 1100 C(2010 F).The tool should be protected against decarburization and oxidation during hardening.Uddeholm Vancron 40 can be heat treated togive a wide range of hardness. To achieve ahardness between 58–65 HRC the austenitizing temperature is varied in the range 950–1100 C (1740–2010 F). The recommendedaustenitizing temperature is 1020 C (1865 F)with 30 minutes holding time followed byquenching and tempering at 560 C (1040 F)/3 x 1 h resulting in a hardness of 60–62 HRC.In order to avoid a too low working hardness it is recommended to austenitize at ahigher hardening temperature than normal andif the hardness will be too high temper downthe hardness to the right hardness level.Hardness, HRC66Tempering 560 C (1040 F)/3 x 1h64626058VANADIS 23VANCRON 40VANADIS 10AISI D25695010001050Austenitizing temperature C41100

UDDEHOLM VANCRON 40Quenching mediaSub-zero treatment Vacuum furnace with high speed gas at sufficient overpressure (2–5 bar) Martempering bath or fluidized bed atapprox. 550 C (1020 F) Forced air/gasTools requiring maximum dimension stability inservice can be sub-zero treated as follows:Note 1: Quenching should be continued untilthe temperature of the tool reaches approx.50 C (120 F). The tool should then be tempered immediately.Note 2: For applications where maximumtoughness is required use a martempering bathor a furnace with sufficient overpressure.TemperingFor cold work applications tempering shouldalways be carried out at 560 C (1040 F)irrespective of the austenitizing temperature.Temper three times for one hour at full temperature. The tool should be cooled to roomtemperature between the tempers. The retained austenite content will be lessthan 3% after this tempering cycle. For the highest requirements on dimensionalstability sub-zero treatment in liquid nitrogenis recommended after quenching and aftereach tempering at 560 C.In less critical cases immediately afterquenching, the tool should be sub-zero treatedto at least -70 C to -80 C (-95 F to -110 F),soaking time 1 – 3 hours, followed by tempering at 560 C (1040 F) x three times. The sub-zero treatment leads to a reductionof the retained austenite content. For a highhardening temperature 1100 C (2010 F),we always recommend sub-zero treatmentfollowed by four temperings at 560 C (1040 F),in order to reduce the retained austenite andimprove the dimensional stability.Dimensional changesDimensional changes after hardening andtempering.Heat treatment: austenitizing between 950–1100 C (1740–2010 F)/30 minutes and tempering 3 x 1 h at 560 C (1040 F).Specimen size: 50 x 50 x 50 mm (2" x 2" x 2")and 100 x 40 x 20 mm (4" x 1,5" x 1").Dimensional changes: growth in length, widthand thickness 0.04% to 0.20%.Adhesive wear.6Galling.

UDDEHOLM VANCRON 40Surface treatmentsWear resistanceNote: Uddeholm Vancron 40 is designed to beused without surface coating as it contains ahigh amount of nitrogen. Some cold-work tools are given a surfacetreatment in order to reduce friction andincrease tool wear resistance. The mostcommonly used treatments are nitriding andsurface coating with wear resistant layers oftitanium carbide and titanium nitride (CVD,PVD).Uddeholm Vancron 40 is normally notneeded to be surface coated by PVD/CVD ornitriding. However, Uddeholm Vancron 40 canbe surface coated like other PM steels.ADHESIVE WEARWear resistance comparison.Component: laboratory test strip.Tool type: blanking punch.Tool dimension: 10 x 40 mm.Work material: 18/8 stainless steel SS 23311 mm thick.Wear loss, µm210000800060004000NitridingA brief immersion in a special salt bath toproduce a nitrided diffusion zone of 2–20 µmis recommended. This reduces the friction onthe envelope surface of punches and hasvarious other advantages.2000PM 4VVANCRON 40PVDPhysical vapour deposition, PVD, is a methodof applying a wear-resistant coating at temperatures between 200–500 C (390–930 F).As Uddeholm Vancron 40 is high temperaturetempered at 560 C (1040 F) there is nodanger of dimensional changes during PVDcoating.PM 4VCVDChemical vapour deposition, CVD, is used forapplying wear-resistant surface coatings at atemperature of around 1000 C (1830 F).It is recommended that the tools should beseparately hardened and tempered in a vacuumfurnace after surface treatment.UDDEHOLMVANCRON 407
