ST. JOSEPH-ON-CARROLLTON MANOR CATHOLIC CHURCHCONFIRMATION MAKE UP WORKCLASS 4 – The Creed(Please Return Make Up Work by the next Confirmation Class – June 2nd)NAME:OPENING PRAYER- Using your Life Teen Bible Read Matthew 28:19- Background History on the Scripture: This verse is called the Great Commission. The Creed goesback to Jesus, who commanded his disciples to baptize. All Creeds of the Church elaborate on theoriginal call from Jesus to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit.-Question: How does this scripture verse help you with your understanding of the Saints?- Say a prayer asking God for help in your Confirmation journey as well as focuses on the importanceof the creed our lives. Then call upon the Holy Spirit to be with you today.TEACHING NOTESRead the following teaching notes on prayer. What does the Creed mean?- The word “creed” comes from the latin word “credo” meaning I believe.- The Creed is what we believe as Catholics. It is our history. Two different Creeds- The Catholic Church has two creeds but they are the same not different- The two creeds are the Apostles & the Nicene Creed- The Apostles Creed is shorter and dates back to the time of the Apostles. This was our first creed.- The Nicene Creed resulted after many questions that came about from the original creed.- People at the time were confused by what Christians believed. Did they believe in 3 Gods? WasJesus truly Man or truly God?- Because of this the Church meet in 325 (in Nicaea) and 381 (in Constantinople) to articulate in detailthe faith, which resulted in the creed becoming longer.- Both creeds have three parts, that we believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy SpiritWhy is it important?- The Creed is our history, our present, and our future.- Most mumble through it during Mass and never stop to think what they are saying- The creed is not just a list of stuff we believe but our hope, our prayer, our faith- I challenge you to pay more attention to the creed during Mass. Don’t just say it – pray it.

GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - KnowledgeEach Confirmation Class we will discuss one of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. In this class we talked about the Gifts of Knowledge.Pray “The Come Holy Spirit Prayer”(by the end of your Confirmation Preparation I hope you know this prayer by heart)Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth yourSpirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the sameHoly Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.KnowledgeKnowledge is the gift of the Holy Spirit that enables a person to judge rightly concerning the truths offaith. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the human intellect makes correct judgments regardingearthly things and how they are related to God, eternal life and Christian perfection. This gift produces several effects which have great value for the soul: introspection, enabling theperson to see the state of his soul; detachment from material things; and repentance for the misuse ofmaterial things or when they have been allowed to become obstacles to God.We must utilize knowledge as a gift of the Holy Spirit to learn these revealed truths and know themwell so each of us can follow the path to heaven God has paved for us.The symbol for Knowledge are books. When one thinks of books he or sheusually imagines a lot of knowledge are in their pages. However, when wespeak of the gift of knowledge it doesn’t mean that you know everythingabout our faith. You are able to use the gift of knowledge to discern theunderstanding of our faith and make right decisions based on them. How do you see being able to use the Gift of the Holy Spirit – Knowledgein your life?CLOSING PRAYERThe Creed really is the prayer of the Church. It always has been. Read the following prayer and seehow the Creed connects us all.In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Creed. Not just a long list but it is our Faith! Creed meaning “I believe” is what the earlyChristians wrote in their blood. The martyrs who died for what they believed in. That same faith that we quicklyrabble off during Mass.

How many these saints were offered the chance to live if only if they would renounce the Creed. All they had todo was just say they didn’t believe in Jesus, or that the church was wrong, or that there isn’t a God & theywould have lived but they didn’t, the couldn’t.Now listen to some stories of these brave saints. That if it wasn’t for their witness we wouldn’t have our faith today.Rome, 3rd Century AD – Perpetua & Felicity were thrown into a Roman Coliseum with about another dozenChristians. They had animal skins sown on their backs so the wild boars and lions would attack them. Thecrowd cheered as they watched the animals slash them to pieces, but they grew still as they saw the look on theChristians faces. There was no fear. They gathered together in the middle of the arena and offered the sign ofpeace to each other, as they were ripped apart by the animals and at the end only Perupeta was barely alive. Theroman solider cam to finish the job the savage beasts could not. But he shook with fear as he saw her calmdemeanor. She helped him hold the shaking sword to her neck and told him she forgave him.Uganda, Africa 15th Century. Catholic Missionaries brought the faith to a small tribe and the tribe’s king wasfurious. The king’s right hand man was baptized and took the name Andrew. Once the king found out, the kinghad Andrew nailed to the grown on a pile of flesh eating ants. As he slowly died for the entire village to see hefiercely preached Christ and many people were converted to the faith, even though by doing it meant theirimmediate execution on the spot.Aushitwiz, Poland. World War II. A man escaped from a consecration camp. And to teach the prisoners a lessonthe German soldiers randomly chose 10 men to die of starvation. The last man they picked began to wail outcrying, “I have wife and children!” Then a man, not one of the 10, stepped forward. My name is MaxillainKolbe he said I am a Catholic priest, pick me instead. In the starvation cell, he celebrated Mass each day andsung hymns with the prisoners. He led the other condemned men in song and prayer and encouraged them bytelling them that they would soon be in Heaven. Each time the guards checked on him, he was standing orkneeling in the middle of the cell and looking calmly at those who entered. The guards hated hearing him singpraises to God. After two weeks of dehydration and starvation, only Kolbe remained alive. The guards wantedthe bunker emptied and they gave Kolbe a lethal injection of acid to kill him.Now what does a Roman Woman, a African Man, and Polish Priest have in Common? They believed in The Creed we profess today At this time pray the Creed “I believe in one God (continue)In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.Answer the following Question:How has this closing prayer let you see prayer in a new way?
