WelcomeDear colleagues,It gives me a great deal of pleasure to welcomeyou to this symposium on advances in breastsurgery. The symposium will focus on stateof-the-art breast reduction and reconstructivebreast surgery. Primary and secondary breastprocedures, reduced scar approaches, new developments in reconstruction, and how to avoidproblems and optimize outcomes will be presented by a distinguished international faculty.Live surgery will be performed at the Frauenklinik Dr. Geisenhofer and broadcasted to theauditorium in The Westin Grand ArabellaparkHotel Munich. This life broadcast of different operative procedures allows symposium participants to observe and continuously interact withthe surgeons conducting the breast operations.Over the years the results of reconstructive breast surgery have beenimproved by more recent emphasis on the aesthetic component. Theline between aesthetic and reconstructive surgery has become blurredand no longer can either of these two aspects of our specialty exist inisolation. Particularly in breast surgery each one requires the other forachieving exceptional results.Although the expansion of increasingly complex techniques representsa challenge to plastic surgeons, maximising patients care in terms ofsafety and quality remains the centre of our efforts. This symposium willnot only cover all the technical aspects in breast surgery but also highlighten patients safety considerations throughout the program.I invite you to come and take part in this exciting and valuable event inMunich, a city famous for its wide range of cultural opportunities and tofeel the romantic mood of the city during Christmas Season.I look forward to seeing you hereProf. Dr. med. 4 Breast cancer Breast cancer: A summary of key information Introduction to breast cancer Breast cancer arises from cells in the breast that have grown abnormally and multiplied to form a lump or tumour. The earliest stage of breast cancer is non-invasive disease (Stage 0), which is contained within the ducts or lobules of the breast and has not spread into the healthy breast tissue .

5 yrs of anti-hormone therapy reduces the risk of: – breast cancer coming back somewhere else in the body (metastases / secondaries) – breast cancer returning in the same breast – a new breast cancer in the opposite breast – death from breast cancer The benefits of anti-hormone therapy last well

Breast cancer development In the United States, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women (excluding skin cancer). Men may also develop breast cancer, but less than 1% of all people with breast cancer are men. Breast cancer begins when healthy cells in the breast change and grow uncontrollably, forming a mass called a tumor.

For most people with secondary breast cancer in the brain, breast cancer has already spread to another part of the body such as the bones, liver or lungs. However, for some people, the brain may be the only area of secondary breast cancer.
