Donot put any other liquids or foods in theWater Tank except as instructed in Careand Cleaning (page 26). This appliance is for household use only. There are two sharp needles thatpuncture the K-Cup . One on theunderside of the Brewing ChamberHead, and the other in the base of theK-Cup Holder. To avoid risk of injury,do not put your fingers in the BrewingChamber or K-Cup Holder. Do not use this appliance for anythingother than its intended use. Do not usein moving vehicles or boats. Do not useoutdoors. To protect against fire, electrical shockand injury to persons, do not immersethe appliance, cord or plug in water orany other liquid. Do not leave the appliance unattendedwhen in use. Close supervision is necessary when theappliance is used by or near children. Always use the appliance on a dry, levelsurface. Do not place this appliance on or neara hot gas or electric burner, or where itcould touch a heated oven. Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handlesand knobs where available. Do not let the cord hang over the edge ofa table or counter, touch hot surfaces orbecome knotted. The use of accessory attachments notrecommended by Breville may cause arisk of injury to persons, fire or electricshock. Do not overfill the Water Tank. Always keep the Water Tank Lid on theWater Tank unless you are refilling it.4 There is extremely hot water in theK-Cup Holder during the brewingprocess. To avoid risk of injury, do notraise the Safety Locking Arm or openthe Brewing Chamber during thebrewing process. To turn off the appliance, press andrelease the Power Switch on the lowerback, right side of the Brewer to the‘OFF’ status and then remove the plugfrom the wall outlet. Always switch the appliance to the‘OFF’ status and then remove the plugfrom the wall outlet when the applianceis not being used and before cleaning.Allow the appliance to cool beforereassembling or removing parts andbefore cleaning the appliance. Strictly follow the Care and Cleaninginstructions (page 26). This appliance is equipped with a powercord having a grounding wire with agrounding plug. The appliance mustbe grounded using a 3-hole properlygrounded outlet. In the event of anelectrical short circuit, grounding reducesthe risk of electrical shock.BREVILLE RECOMMENDS SAFETY FIRST If the outlet is a standard 2-prong walloutlet, it is your personal responsibilityand obligation to have it replaced with aproperly grounded 3-prong wall outlet. OPERATINGyour new Breville Gourmet Single Cup Brewer Operating your breville gourmet single cup brewer Installing the water filterFor the best tasting gourmet coffee, teaor hot cocoa, Breville recommends usingbottled or filtered water.The Water Filter provided with the Brewercan significantly reduce substances thataffect the smell and taste of water such asfree chlorine, certain pesticides and organicimpurities as well as traces of heavy metals.NOTE:The Water Filter can be removedfrom the Brewer.If you choose to install the WaterFilter, it is recommended to replacethe filter every 2 months or 60 tankrefills, more often if you havehard water.We recommend removing the WaterFilter if using filtered water, or if youchoose not to replace the WaterFilter every 2 months, as the filtermay clog and affect the smell andtaste of the water.If you choose not to install the WaterFilter, you are ready to start theOne-time Priming Process (page 10).NOTE:Do not use water that has beentreated by a 'water softener'. Theincrease in sodium levels in thewater can cause scaling in thebrewer and hinder its performance.2. Remove the Water Tank Lid.3. Rinse the Water Tank with fresh waterand replace back onto the Brewer.4. Remove the Upper and Lower FilterHolder and Water Filter from thepolybag. Unwrap the Water Filter fromits protective plastic.5. Soak the Water Filter for 5 minutes thenrinse for 30 seconds. It is normal to seea grey residue after soaking the filter.6. Wash the Lower Filter Holder, ensuringthe stainless steel mesh is free of residue.7. Insert the Water Filter into the UpperFilter Holder, then attach the Lower FilterHolder so it locks into place.Follow these steps each time you install anew Water Filter to ensure it filters optimally.1. Remove the Water Tank from the Brewerby gripping the handle located on the leftside of the Water Tank, then lift upwards.89

Operating your breville gourmet single cup brewer 8. Set the date dial on the Upper FilterHolder 2 months ahead. This willremind you when the Charcoal Filterwill need to be replaced.9. Place the assembled Filter Holder intothe Water Tank, aligning so the datedial is visible from outside the Tank.Push down hard on the assembledFilter Holder until it snaps into place.10. Your Brewer is ready for the one-timepriming process.NOTE:Replace the Water Filter every2 months, or 60 tank refills, moreif you have hard water.To order replacement WaterFilters, visit www.breville.com.We recommend removing the WaterFilter if you choose not to replacethe Water Filter every 2 months, asthe filter may clog and affect thesmell and taste of the water.One-time priming processPriming fills the internal tank with water andcleanses the brewing system. You cannotuse your Brewer until it has been primed forits first use.NOTE:If the Brewer has been exposed totemperatures below freezing, allowthe Brewer at least two hours toreach room temperature beforepriming. A frozen or extremely coldBrewer will not prime properly andcan cause damage.101. Unwrap the power cord and plug theBrewer into a grounded outlet.2. Place a 12 oz. mug on the Drip TrayPlate. The drip tray plate and drip traycan be removed to accomodate tallermugs and travel mugs.3. Fill the Water Tank with water up to the'MAX' mark on the viewing window.The Water Tank can be filled in two ways:a) Remove the Water Tank Lid and pourwater directly into the Water Tankwhile it is still attached to the Brewer,then replace the Lid.b) Remove the Water Tank Lid, thengripping the handle located on the leftside of the Water Tank, lift upwards.Fill with water. Place the Water Tankback onto the Brewer and replacethe Lid.NOTE:Do not use water that has beentreated by a 'water softener'. Theincrease in sodium levels in thewater can cause scaling in thebrewer and hinder its performance.4. Press and release the Power Switchlocated on the lower back, right side ofthe Brewer. The Power Switch is springloaded and will return to its originalposition.Operating your breville gourmet single cup brewer NOTE:If the Water Tank is empty or not inplace on the Brewer, the Water TankLED’s will flash and the LCD screenwill indicate ‘REFILL TANK’. Noneof the control panel buttons will beactive until water is added to theWater Tank.6. Once the water is heated, the LCDscreen will indicate 'OPEN HEAD'. Openthe Brewing Chamber Head by raisingand lowering the Safety Locking Armcompletely. Do not insert a K-Cup during this process. This will allow you torun a cleansing brew. The 'BREW' buttonwill now be illuminated.7. Press the 'BREW' button. This will starta cleansing brew which will completethe priming sequence. Hot water willflow into your mug. When the water flowstops, discard the hot water.NOTE:The Brewer will take about 4 minutesto heat up during the primingprocess.9. Fill the Water Tank with water up to the'MAX' mark on the viewing window.10. The LCD screen will indicate ‘OPENHEAD’. Open the Brewing ChamberHead by raising and lowering the SafetyLocking Arm completely. The LCDscreen will indicate ‘READY TO BREW’.11. The one-time priming process is nowcomplete and you are ready for yourfirst K-Cup brew (page 12) or MyK-Cup brew (page 14).8. The LCD screen will indicate ‘HEATING’as the Brewer heats the water for thenext brew cycle. Once the water isheated, the LCD screen may indicate‘REFILL TANK’.NOTE:For BKC600XL priming information,please refer to page 30.5. The Water Tank LED and LCD screen willilluminate. The Brewer will automaticallyfill with water and make a quiet vibratingsound. This is normal. The LCD screenwill indicate 'HEATING'.11

Operating your breville gourmet single cup brewer Brewing a K-Cup 1. Follow the instructions, Installing theWater Filter (page 9) and the One-timePriming Process (page 10). The Brewershould be turned on and the WaterTank should be filled and illuminated.2. The LCD screen will indicate ‘READYTO BREW’. Theandbuttonswill illuminate and the ‘BREW’ buttonwill illuminate and flash for up to60 seconds.NOTE:There are two sharp needles thatpuncture the K-Cup . One on theunderside of the Brewing ChamberHead and the other in the base ofthe K-Cup Holder. To avoid risk ofinjury, do not put your fingers in theBrewing Chamber or K-Cup Holder.NOTE:If the ‘BREW’ button is not pressedin 60 seconds, the LCD screenwill indicate ‘OPEN HEAD’ and the‘BREW’ button will be disabled toprevent accidental activation. Tore-activate the brew sequence,open the Brewing Chamber Headby raising and lowering the SafetyLocking Arm completely.3. Place a cup or mug on the Drip TrayPlate. The drip tray plate and drip traycan be removed to accomodate tallermugs and travel mugs.4. Raise the Safety Locking Arm. To choosea different size, press thebutton togo up in size or thebutton to godown in size.NOTE:Select from a stronger small cup(5.25 oz. serving), a small mug (7.25oz. serving), a large mug (9.25 oz.serving), a travel mug (11.25 oz.serving) or iced beverage setting(3.25oz serving). The iced beveragesetting is only available on the theBKC700XL.The small mug (7.25 oz. serving) isthe default brew size.To program your favorite brew size,refer to Setting the ‘BREW SIZE’feature (page 24).7. Lower the Safety Locking Arm toclose the Brewing Chamber Headover the K-Cup Holder. When closedcompletely, the LCD screen will indicate‘READY TO BREW’. Theandbuttons will illuminate and the ‘BREW’button will illuminate and flash for up to60 seconds.NOTE:To use the iced beverage setting,place a tall glass filled with ice on thedrip tray. Use your favorite K-Cup ,select the iced beverage brew sizebutton. Add more ice once brewingis complete, add cream and sugar ifdesired. The iced beverage setting isonly available on the BKC700XL.5. Select a K-Cup .6. Place the K-Cup in the K-Cup Holder (located in the BrewingChamber). Do not remove the foil lidor puncture the K-Cup .12b) Once the brew size is selected, pressthe ‘BREW’ Button. The ‘BREW’button will stop flashing, theandbuttons will no longer be lit. The LCDscreen will indicate ‘BREWING’ andthe selected brew size.NOTE:If the ‘BREW’ button is not pressedin 60 seconds, the LCD screenwill indicate ‘OPEN HEAD’ and the‘BREW’ button will be disabled toprevent accidental activation. Tore-activate the brew sequence,open the Brewing Chamber Headby raising and lowering the SafetyLocking Arm completely.8. The LCD screen will indicate‘BREWING’, however there may be ashort pause before the brewing processbegins. The process lasts about 60seconds and ends with a burst of air toremove all liquid from the K-Cup .13

This process lasts about15 seconds. The pump will make avibrating sound. This is normal.9. Raise the Safety Locking Arm, removeand dispose of the used K-Cup . Usecaution as the K-Cup will be hot.10. Enjoy your first cup of gourmet coffee,tea or hot cocoa!11. The LCD screen will indicate ‘READYTO BREW’, indicating that the nextK-Cup can be inserted for the nextbrew cycle.Brewing with the My K-Cup AccessoryThe Breville Gourmet Single Cup Brewer comes with a My K-Cup accessory. Thedishwasher safe, reusable My K-Cup allows you to use your own grind of coffeeso you can adjust the amount and type ofcoffee to suit your tastes. Along with theincluded measuring scoop, this accessoryconveniently stores in the easy opencompartment on top of the brewer.1. Follow the instructions, Installing theWater Filter (page 9) and the One-timePriming Process (page 10). The Brewershould be turned on and the Water Tankshould be filled and illuminated.Operating your breville gourmet single cup brewer 4. Open the storage compartment locatedon top of the Brewer by pressing thefinger indent on the right side. Removethe My K-Cup accessory.5. Disassemble the My K-Cup accessoryby removing the Lid from the Holder in acounterclockwise direction. Remove theFilter Basket from the Holder.6. Wash the My K-Cup Lid, Filter Basketand Holder in warm soapy water prior tofirst use. Rinse and dry thoroughly.7. Insert the Filter Basket into the Holder.14Or, if you like a stronger brew, selectthe small cup 5.25 oz. serving.If you grind your own beans:1. Start with a coarser grind similarto a French Press grind.2. Experiment with grinds similar todrip brewing grinds.3. Avoid a fine espresso grindsetting that could clog theFilter Basket or result in poorextraction.10. Place the assembled My K-Cup Holder into the Brewing Chamber.To do this:2. The LCD screen will indicate ‘READYTO BREW’.3. Place a cup or mug on the Drip TrayPlate. The drip tray plate and drip traycan be removed to accomodate tallermugs and travel mugs.We recommend this for the smallmug 7.25 oz. serving.9. Raise the Safety Locking Arm. Alternatively,there are line markings on the insideof the Filter Basket that indicate 1tablespoon and 2 tablespoons so youcan adjust the amount of coffee to yourpersonal preference. Do not fill the FilterBasket with more than one level scoopof coffee or tamp the grinds. Ensure thecoffee remains loose and there are nocoffee grinds remaining on the upperrim of the Filter Basket. Screw on theLid to seal.a) Remove the K-Cup Holder from theBrewing Chamber (10a). Store theK-Cup Holder in the My K-Cup Storage compartment located ontop of the Brewer.b) Insert the assembled My K-Cup Holder into the Brewing Chamber(10b), ensuring to align thearrowon the My K-Cup Lid with thearrow in the Brewing Chamber.15

To avoid riskof injury, do not raise the SafetyLocking Arm or open the BrewingChamber during the brewingprocess.NOTE:Select from a stronger small cup(5.25 oz. serving), a small mug (7.25oz. serving), a large mug (9.25 oz.serving), a travel mug (11.25 oz.serving) or iced beverage setting(3.25oz serving). Operating your breville gourmet single cup brewer NOTE:The My K-Cup accessory isdesigned for ground coffee only.Do not:a) Use a K-Cup or coffee pod inthe My K-Cup Filter Basket.b) Use the My K-Cup FilterBasket with the K-Cup HolderAfter brewing with the MyK-Cup accessory, the K-Cup Holder must be inserted into theBrewing Chamber in order tobrew a K-Cup .To replace the K-Cup Holder, raisethe Safety Locking Arm, and removethe My K-Cup Holder. InsertK-Cup Holder into the BrewingChamber, aligning thearrow onarrowthe K-Cup Holder with thein the Brewing Chamber. Usecaution when doing this as thereis a sharp needle on the undersideof the Brewing Chamber Head thatpunctures the K-Cup .SROPPING THE BREW PROCESSTo stop brewing after the process hasstarted, press and release the PowerSwitch on the right side of the Brewer tothe ‘OFF’ status. The flow of coffee, tea orhot cocoa will stop, the heating elementwill shut off and the LED’s illuminating theWater Tank will no longer be lit. The LCDscreen will indicate the time, ‘ON-OFFTIME’ and ‘AUTO OFF’. None of the controlpanel buttons will be active until the Breweris turned back on.18NOTE:You may get less coffee, tea or hotcocoa during your next brew. Aftera terminated brew, we recommendthat you follow the instructions forBrewing hot water (page 18). Yournext brew will then dispense thecorrect volume according to thebrew size you have selected.Brewing hot waterThe Brewer is able to dispense a cup of hotwater for making hot chocolate in a packet,for use in cooking, for making soups, etc.Follow the instructions Brewing a K-Cup (page 12), without inserting a K-Cup .NOTE:After brewing a hot cocoa K-Cup ,or stopping the brew processmid-cycle, we recommend running ahot water brew cycle.Refilling the water tankThe LCD screen will indicate ‘REFILLTANK’ when the water level in the WaterTank is low or if the Water Tank has beenremoved.1. Fill the Water Tank with water up to the'MAX' mark on the viewing window. TheWater Tank can be filled in two ways:a) Remove the Water Tank Lid and pourwater directly into the Water Tank whileit is still attached to the Brewer, thenreplace the Lid.b) Remove the Water Tank Lid, thengripping the handle located on the leftside of the Water Tank, lift upwards. Thisis normal.3. Once the Safety Locking Arm is openedand lowered, or the water is heated,the LCD screen will indicate ‘READYTO BREW’, indicating the brew cyclecan begin. Theandbuttons willilluminate and the ‘BREW’ button willilluminate and flash for up to 60 seconds.NOTE:If the ‘BREW’ button is not pressedin 60 seconds, the LCD screenwill indicate ‘OPEN HEAD’ and the‘BREW’ button will be disabled toprevent accidental activation. Tore-activate the brew sequence,open the Brewing Chamber Headby raising and lowering the SafetyLocking Arm completely.2. If there is no water in the Water Tank, refillwith water. Place the Water Tank backonto the Brewer and replace the Lid.3. Ensure the Brewer is turned on. Raiseand lower the Safety Locking Arm on theBrewer without inserting a K-Cup .4.
