WESTERN WASHINGTONPHEASANT RELEASE PROGRAMRequired Licenses and Bag Limits:The purpose of the pheasantprogram in western Washingtonis to provide upland bird huntingopportunity. This programencourages participation fromnew, young and seasoned hunters.Naturally sustained pheasantpopulations are limited in westernWashington due to the cool wetclimate and the lack of grainfarming. Each year 35,000 to40,000 pheasants are released onapproximately 25 release sites. The majority of release sitesremain the same from one year tothe next. Maps to current sites areenclosed.Hunting Seasonsand RegulationsThe general western Washingtonhunting season lasts from lateSeptember to November 30 eachyear (see hunting regulations fordetails). Hunting is allowed from8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. each day. Some areas may not release birdsthroughout the season due toflooding or other conflicts. To protect other wildlife speciesincluding waterfowl and raptors, nontoxic shot is required for allupland bird, dove and band-tailedpigeon hunting on all pheasantrelease sites statewide.A western Washington pheasantlicense is required to hunt pheasantsin western Washington. A smallgame license is not required toparticipate. The western Washingtonpheasant license costs 84.50 foradults and 40.50 for youth (under16). The bag limit is two pheasants ofeither sex per day. A three-day permitis also offered for 40.50 for residents.Parking and Safety at ReleaseSites:Generally, release sites haveestablished parking areas or accesspoints. These areas are open to allusers. Any restrictions associatedwith use of the release sites other thanthose noted in the hunting pamphlet, will be posted at the access points. There are several safety issues thathunters should be aware of whilehunting on release sites. The sitesare usually fairly crowded and oftenrelatively close to houses or othertypes of recreation. Hunter orangemust be worn by hunters usingrelease sites. Be aware of Safety Zonesigns and stay away from areas postedas such. Other instructions andinformation will be posted at releasesites.Additional Points:While it is always important to becourteous to other hunters, it isespecially important while huntingcrowded release sites. A few courtesyrules include:1. Don't trail or otherwise positionyourself to take advantage of otherhunters, you may end up in theirline of fire!2. Racing out ahead of otherhunters to beat them to birds isunethical and dangerous. Pleaserespect others and allow timeand space.3. If you see other hunters thatmay not be familiar withhunting the release site, invitethem to join your group. This isespecially important for younghunters and those withoutdogs. By promoting safe, ethicalhunting you help ensure thecontinuation of recreationfor yourself and for futuregenerations.Western WashingtonRegional Offices:Region 4(425) 775-131116018 Mill Creek Blvd.Mill Creek, WA 98012-1296Region 5(360) 696-62115525 S 11th StreetRidgefield, WA 98642Region 6(360) 249-462848 Devonshire Rd.Montesano, WA 98563
