Capture natural soundWith1Píckerín.From the softest flutter of the woodwinds to the floor- shaking boom of the bass drum, natural sound begins with Pickering. Right where the stylus meets the groove.Any of the new Pickering V -15 stereo cartridges will reproduce the groove, the wholegroove and nothing but the groove. That's why a Pickering can't help sounding natural ifthe record and the rest of the equipment are of equally high quality. To assure compatibility with your stereo equipment, there are four different PickeringV -15 pickups, each designed for a specific application. The new V- 15AC -2 is for conventional record changers where high output and heavier tracking forces are required. The newV- 15AT -2 is for lighter tracking in high -quality automatic turntables. The even more compliant V- 15AM -1 is ideal for professional -type manual turntables. And the V- 15AME -1 withelliptical stylus is the choice of the technical sophisticate who demands the last word intracking ability. No other pickup design is quite like the Pickering V -15. The cartridge weighs next tonothing (5 grams) in order to take full advantage of low -mass tone arm systems. Pickering'sexclusive Floating Stylus and patented replaceable V -Guard stylus assembly protect boththe record and the diamond. But the final payoff is in the sound. You will hear the difference.PICKERING -for those who can hear the difference.Pickering&Co., Plainview, L.I., N.Y.CIRCLE 61 ON READER -SERVICE CARDHIGH FIDELITY MAGAZINE2www.americanradiohistory.com

ROBERTSFIELDCROSS770 STEREOBack from the DeadSIR:thoroughly enjoyed reading Conrad L.Osborne's "The Operas of Mozart onMicrogroove" [November 19651 -an exceptional report which found muchpraise here in Europe. And although 1appreciate his comments on my work inthe Deutsche Grammophon recording ofDie Zauberflöte, I would like to pointout that his announcement of my demiseis premature. While it is true thatHeldentenor Vandenburg no longer exists, Heldenbariton Vandenburg is stillvery much alive, a fact corroborated byrecent appearances as Scarpia in Munich,Wotan and Scarpia in Düsseldorf, andin the title role of Hindemith's Mathisder Maler at the opera house in Dortmund. That he so successfullyinvested such an overwhelming task withhis usual understanding. clarity, andfelicitous style, indicates that it must havebeen a labor of love.I also share his high estimate of InaSouez's contribution to the Glyndebournerecordings, and I urge Odeon to releasean LP recital disc devoted to this greatartist. The record could include, in addition to arias from the Glyndebourne"Emani, inrolruni," "Castasets, herdiva," and Micaëla's Aria from Carmen(the latter is at present available onlyon Japanese HMV). mnwkrwkaI wbelieves you should know the facts!THE PROBLEM:THE SOLUTION:Achieving the total signalof a stereo recording.Straight Line Tracking byMarantz. When the master disc is cut, the cutting head travelsacross the disc in a straight line. The grooves are cutproportionately to the volume of the sound; as thesound ebbs, the grooves narrowas the sound swells, they broaden. Each side of the groove carries a separatetrackone for each stereo channel. These groovescarry the total sound originally recorded. To reproduce the original sound faithfully, the stylusmust pick up the full track created by the cutting headon each side of the groove. In order to achieve this resultthe tone arm must travel the same straight line createdby the recording cutting head.During conventional tracking the tone arm moves in anarc across the surface of the recordcompletely opposed to the straight path created by the cutting head.Dynamically the stylus is drawn against the inner sideof the groove and away from the outer. The result is aclear signal on the inner channel, distortion and loss ofsignal on the neglected outer channel. Consequently, conventional tracking can never faithfully reproducethe sound as it was originally recorded. The Marantz SLT -12 tone arm tracks across the disc ina straight line following the path originally created bythe cutting head. Thus the stylus, always tangent to thegrooves, receives the full signal incised on each side ofthe groove. It is the only system available which faithfully reproduces the sound that was originally recorded.---The critical elements of the Marantz SLT-12 Turntableprovide maximum precision and stability in support ofthe tone arm assembly. The free- floating stylus is alwaysfully positioned in the groove by counter -balancing thetone arm assembly. A 12 lb. cast and dynamically balanced turntable rest upon a massive, precision -groundtungsten carbide thrust bearing to produce low friction, dimensional stability. Power is derived from a hysteresis synchronous motor. The precision -ground uscothancdrive belt is noted for its uniquely stable elasticity. Pushbutton controls have been installed for convenience, while the cueing device eliminates the necessity of evertouching the tone arm. The number of boyswas increased from three to ten, therebyallowing for fidelity to Mozart's conceptas well as for opera house acousticaldemands.Elizabeth Mary KirchenCambridge, Mass.SIR:Reviewing a Cambridge recording devoted to three of my compositions, AlfredFrankenstein wrote in your Decemberissue: ". the music may most charitablybe described as utterly sterile and hopeless. ." I feel the strength of hisnegative attitude warrants some comment on my part. Of course, there aretwo sides to every coin; Mr. Frankenstein has a right to his opinion. Hedislikes music which, in the case ofEvolutions and Progressions, has receivedimpressive reviews in the past and fromMr. Frankenstein's own colleagues inthis very magazine. What I object to most strenuously, however, is the nature of the reviewitself, which may most charitably bedescribed as superficial and uninformative, and by no stretch of the imaginationa complete critical judgment of the recording in question. Mr. Frankensteinwrote one paragraph consisting of foursentences. three of which were devotedto explaining the titles and instrumentsused in the three compositions. Thefourth sentence, quoted above without itstag phrase about the excellent sound, ends the review. This is an insult to any reader with agrain of musical inquisitiveness. Thereader has a right to demand from thecritic the why of his judgments, whetherthey are favorable or not. Surely a recording of three contemporary works, two of which are new to records, by anAmerican composer on a label notedfor the quality of its releases does notpresent a critic with a barren situationat least not as barren as Mr. Frankenstein's feeble paragraph would suggest.Harold FarherntnnNew York, N.Y.available.equipment cabinetsspeakerconsolescabinetsenclosuresgalore.
