NelsonRockefeller.HE WAS the firstvisiting speaker to arrivepromptly on time andhe clearly was the bestturkey grabber sinceHumphrey. Some said hewas even more dexterousthan the Vice Presidentin this crowd-pleasingTurkey Day chore.It was exactly 12:30p.m. Saturday when thegovernor’s private jetCommander appearedover Municipal Airportwhere a crowd of 200persons was assembledto greet him. Fourminutes later, the sleekjet touched down on therunway and taxied to theramp.Arriving earlier wereCongressman AncherNelsen and Gov. HaroldLeVander plus a numberof other state and areapolitical figures. Bannersand signs in the crowdwelcomed Rockefellerto Worthington and theTurkey Kingdom.Rockefeller didn’t missa hand as he wanderedthrough the crowdsigning autographs andsmiling a response to thegreeting. He even shookhands with the membersof the color guard andthe bystanders along theairport fence.After 10 minutes,Rockefeller was escortedto his convertible forthe trip downtown. Thecaravan was taken intothe parade corridor of10th Street, already linedwith people who werenot about to give up theircurbside parade watchingvantage points. Otherthousands, however,crowded close to thespeakers’ platform andgave the New Yorker afriendly and enthusiasticwelcome.Master of CeremoniesJim Wychor read twotelegrams extendinggreeting andrecollections of formerTurkey Days. One wasfrom Richard Nixon whospoke from the sameplatform in 1954 and theother was from HubertHumphrey who lastspoke to a Turkey Daycrowd in 1965.GOV.
