70Anchor DevicesAnchors areliterally thefoundation ofmodern rescuetechniques. Since every rescuepresents new challenges, ouranchor products are quick andintuitive to use, but as versatileand adaptable as possible, soprofessionals can set secureanchor points and get on withthe business at hand. The Arizona Vortex providesan artificial high-directionalfor easier edge transitions, increasing both safety andefficiency. We’ve recentlyupdated several of our mostpopular anchor strap productsto incorporate some of ourlatest ideas, which makequickly setting secure anchorseven simpler.www.cmcrescue.com

Initial development work was done under the direction ofReed Thorne. The first metal prototype of the Arizona Vortex was an easel-style A-frame,welded together from square steel tubing and plate. Although heavy and cumbersome,it provided a test bed for proving and refining the design. The next step was theconstruction of an aluminum prototype. It was tested extensively in Ropes ThatRescue rigging seminars before the next prototype was made. The final designfurther refined the legs’ adjusting system and introduced the versatileraptor foot, named for its claw-like appearance.Anchor DevicesArizona VortexHardwareHarnessesARizonA VoRTEx ANCHOR DEVICES

72ANCHOR DEVICES ARizonA VoRTExArizona VortexUL Classified to NFPA 1983 – General UseEN 795USAThe father of all portable anchor/high directional systems, the Arizona Vortex is a tripod, bipodand monopod in one all-inclusive kit. Its two-piece head can be rigged as a standard tripod or,in advanced applications, as an A-frame, a sideways A-frame, or a gin pole. The tripod canbe formed into an easel A-frame with adjustable leg lengths. The versatile third leg allowsrescuers to set up an artificial high directional in virtually any urban, industrial, or wildernesslocation. On A-frame and easel A-frame applications, pulleys can be attached directly intothe Head Set without carabiners, eliminating lost headspace and working clearance. This feature makes the Vortex ideal for use with high lines and tracking line offsets. The extra attachment points also work well for rope access where several lines maybe needed over the edge. Raptor and flat foot sets are both included to provide asecure footing on varying terrain. Also included: bright colored flags that can beattached to pins to increase visibility and an 18 kN MBS cord for securing thelegs. The kit provides a complete solution, so you’ll have what you need withoutrequiring optional extras. Improper rigging puts subjects and rescuers at risk. A knowledge of advancedrigging and complex guying systems is essential to safely set up A-frames and gin poles. As with allrescue techniques, and particularly where advanced skills are involved, CMC urges professional leveltraining. 80ANCHOR DEVICES AnCHoR PlATESTwenty years ago CMCintroduced the Anchor PlateAnchor Platesas a strong, lightweight, and compactcollection point for connecting a rescuesystem to an anchor. And that point is animportant feature. Over the years we’veseen a steady progression of “bigger, better”anchor and rigging plates with more andmore holes entering the market. But thebigger the plate, the less like a collectionpoint it becomes, increasing the potentialfor rotation of the plate, creating additionalsystem extension and shock-loading if anymovement or failure of an anchor occurs. In 20 years of use, we’ve not seen anoperational need for more holes, a largersize, or more weight.A Classic CMC InnovationUL Classified to NFPA 1983 – General UseA CMC original design that has withstood the test of time, ourAnchor Plates keep the carabiners holding the different parts ofyour rescue system from jamming together. The hardware becomes easierto see, making safety checks more accurate. It can also keep you fromclipping a carabiner into the wrong loop of the anchor web. For anchorsystems, it makes an excellent collection point. We use the Anchor Plate inCMC Rope Rescue classes, which allows our students to set up systemsfaster with fewer mistakes.
