32 Wheel bearing LubricationLubricationWhy is a lubricant required?For roller bearings, lubrication has the primary task of minimising frictionand wear by preventing or reducing metallic contact between the rolling andsliding surfaces.Grease lubrication is used for approximately 90% of roller bearings. Thecurrent requirements for truck wheel bearings and the peak temperaturesthat occur there during braking of 200 C and beyond, make the use ofapproved lubricants an absolute requirement.The main advantages of suitable grease lubrication are:n high usage period with maintenance-free lubricationn good support of the grease sealn dissipation of heatn corrosion protection of the bearingn minimal engineering effortn damping of running noisesComposition of and differences between greasesDifferent roller bearing types have different requirements of the lubricantand it additives.The performance of greases of the same type can vary significantly!Lubricating greases are distinguished above all by their main componentsof thickener and base oil.
