What is an Expedition?An expedition is a guided, themedinteractive tour of a specific area of theZoo.Please note: You will not see theentire Zoo on your Expedition.Expeditions last about 45 minutes.We provide background materials andsuggested pre-visit activities to prepareyour group.

Your Expedition: Waters Around the WorldObjectives:1. Observe how animals and people use and rely on water asdemonstrated by listing 5 ways they use fresh water and 5 ways peopleand animals use salt water.2. Identify the quantity of overall water and water on Earth asdemonstrated by physically participating in and recording the results ofrole-playing activities simulating global water availability.3. Identify how to conserve water as demonstrated by writing one waythey can conserve fresh water and one way they can conserve saltwater.

What to do when you arrive?Your buses will pull up to the dropoff area at the Front Gate.A staff person will check in your busand call your guide.Your guide will meet you at the frontand walk you to the starting locationfor your program(It’s about a 5-minute walk)

Where will your Expedition begin?Your Expedition will beginnear the Totem Pole at thebeginning of the Rocky Coasts.Here your guide will give youan introduction and ask yourgroup questions about the previsit lessons and video.Your guide will also hand outscience notebooks for eachstudent to gather informationthroughout the program.

StationsAfter your guide has outlined your topic and goal, youwill stop at different stations outlined in the sciencenotebook you receive during the introduction!

Salt Water StationHere you will observe our sea lions and how they interact withsalt water.Students will investigate a human connection by brainstormingways people rely on salt water.Students will get to taste salt water and will play a game todetermine if Earth’s surface is made up of more land or water.Students will discuss waysto conserve water that peopleand animals rely on.

Fresh Water StationHere you will observe our sandhill cranes and how they interact with freshwater.Students will investigate a human connection by brainstorming wayspeople rely on fresh water.Students will play a game to determinehow much of Earth’s fresh water isaccessible for drinking.Students will discuss ways to conservewater that people and animals rely on.

ConclusionsAt the last station, students will be asked to makea promise answering the following question:What is one thingyou learned todaythat they will do toprotect waterresources soimportant to peopleand animals?
