6Precision RiflemanLee Hachigian,EditorA Dropped ShotLetters To The EditorGreat Jobing a great job, of course!Lee, I have been meaning to sendyou an e-mail to tell you what a goodjob you have been doing with themagazine. Well here it is! You are do-SBEastern RegionThank you for the note. I’m trying to do thebest I can (considering that I’m a retired Chemical Engineer, LOL). What will help me themost, is if shooters let me know, what they likeand what you could do without (or a little lessof). Suggestions as to discussions for the Readyon the Firing Line, articles, etc. From The EditorAs I returned from the WBC-15match in Calgary, Alberta many of myfamily and friends asked me how I didand if I had a good time. As I told all ofthem, I had a great time! It is so muchfun to shoot in a “team” competition. Ibecame friends with fellow competitorsat a different level than you can experience once or twice a year at the largermatches. The Match report will be highlighted in the October issue, and will includeinsight to conditions and events (thosehigh and low). I have to give credit tothe folks at Rosebud Silhouette Club forhosting and executing a perfect match(from my competitor’s point of view). It went flawlessly, and the hospitalitywas outstanding! Kudos also go out toWayne and Pam Campbell who facilitated everything from custom’s forms, clothing and transportation. I recommend that every serious shooter try torepresent your country’s team. You willbe so proud when you get called to thepodium!Thank YouThe Tony Boyer family would like to say Thank You to eachand everyone for all the PRAYERS, LOVE, and SUPPORTduring this difficult time with the passing of my wife and mother.GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERYONE!!!!Tony Boyer.& Terri and SherryPrecision Rifleman Magazine welcomes letters tothe editor. September 2019 Precision Rifleman7Ready on the Firing Line.“Ready on the Firing Line.” is a monthly feature of the magazine, where questions on all aspects of precision shootingare answered by Benchrest Hall of Fame members and/or seasoned benchrest shooters. This Month’s question: Do you recommend shootersto have their your own chamberreamer, and why? Do you have oneand its dimensions?Jack NearyLee, If you are chambering morethan 1 or 2 barrels a year, then I wouldrecommend purchasing your ownreamer. I use a JGS 1045 reamer, asJGS reamers are slightly larger in thebody than Henriksen and they are much, much easier to obtain a proper sizingfull-length die. The small body dimension of Henriksen reamers are currentlycausing many BR shooters fits in tryingto find a FL dies that small enough toproperly size their cases.Dave CootsDefinitely buy your own reamer. Itis one of the cheapest items in BenchrestIMO. Get a sizing die to match and youare good to go. No more sizing problems. I am using a Henriksen standardPPC reamer now with the old fashioned.262 ND. I would switch to a .268 NDbut I don’t want to go through the hassleto get a straight line die to match a newreamer.Joel Nader(2019 2-Gun World Champion)Lee, Having one’s own chamberreamer is nice from the standpoint offamiliarity. Every time you set up toshoot a new barrel you will know whereto start your evaluation process. The reamer’s chamber length andfree bore should be paired with yourfavorite bullet so that when the bullet isseated to touch the rifling the heel of thebullet should be about 1/3 of the waydown the case neck.I have used different reamers andsettled on a 1.510- .040fb to match upwith my 8.5 ogive boat tail (.820-.825length jacket).Peter SmithIn a perfect world, every shooterwould have his own reamer. It just makesthings so much easier when everythingis the same barrel to barrel. I am sofortunate that the gunsmith chamberingmy barrels takes great care so that everybarrel I have will use the same brass withthe same die and die setting. My reameris a JGS “Borden Revision” reamer witha .020” throat. This reamer is a tiny bitlarger diameter at the base so I neverhave trouble with any unformed brassfitting the chamber and getting a sizingdie to match is not an issue.Harley BakerLee, I would highly recommendthat shooters have their own chamberreamer and matching full length die.Twomain reason are that you get used toshooting the same reamer set up and canlearn the nuances from barrel to barreland bullet to bullet plus with a matchingCall: 505 888-2866sales@edgebag.comwww.edgebag.comfull length die you do not overwork yourbrass. There are other reasons but thesetwo are critical. My reamer specs by JGS1) .272 Neck2) 1.510 Chamber length3) .035 -.040 Free BoreThe EditorMy reamer is from Hugh Henriksen. It’s has 0.268 neck with a trimlength is 1.50”, which is about .010shorter than most. Also, my leade angleis 1 50’ with a freebore length of .070.This freebore provides an overall lengthon the loaded round that seems to workwell even the heaviest powder chargeswhile still holding the majority of bullets firmly. I don’t think it is critical tohave your own reamer (I didn’t have one15 years). However, I like the fact thatnow I can slap a new barrel on any ofmy rifles, and pretty much know whereI’m going to start my tuning loads. It’sjust one less variable I don’t need to beas concerned with. One more point, agood reamer can last a lifetime.
