It wasa commercial that said, “In the Army, wedo more before 9 a.m. than most peopledo all day.” They were all working hard, working together, accomplishing theirmission and goals, and when I saw thatcommercial, I knew that’s where I wantedto be. I’ve lived my life by setting goals, identifying problems, creating solutions, accomplishing goals. And last year, whatI saw in Congress and locally—becausePeter King is also local—congestion andgridlock and people sticking their headsin the sand, I knew I could do the job. Asan educator, communicator, retired military officer, government official and asingle mom, I could draw on those skillsin many career fields. Another thing wasthe sense of ‘King’s not here.’ He showsup election time or for awards for fireSee JACKIE GORDON on page 5IslipIslip TownPage 3Page 9Rotary commitsto water qualityINSPIRATIONAWARDSEach year, The Islip Bulletin recognizes the volunteer work of outstanding localresidents and organizations. ISLIP BULLETIN - JANUARY 2, 2020 3ISLIPFour clubs, one environmental goalRotary Clubs commit to waterqualityBy LINDA LEUZZITo visitors, boaters and those who workthe water, Fire Island and the Great SouthBay’s shimmering, magical lure are inspirational bell-ringers. So when Brian McAuliffwas sworn in at Watch Hill as Patchogue’snew Rotary Club president, he announcedhis intention to tackle a cause the clubhadn’t had on its agenda: the environment.“That dovetailed with seeing [SayvilleRotary president] Bob Draffin at a trainingsession and discussing initiatives,” saidMcAuliff. “Rotary is a bigger force. The bayis in trouble and Sayville had already beendoing projects [to protect it].”As a result, several local Rotary Clubs, including Bellport and Islip, will partnerthis year with established environmentalgroups on specific projects to help improve water quality as well as aid initiativeson Fire Island. The commitment was announced inDecember at Blue Goose restaurant inPatchogue during a lively joint meeting.Attendees included Citizens Campaignfor the Environment executive directorAdrienne Esposito, Kaetlyn Jackson ofFire Island National Seashore and baymanKeenan Boyle.Boyle, who lives in Sayville and workswith several oyster farms, including MarisStella Blue Point Oysters, transports spat(baby oysters) from their hatcheries outto Snakehill Channel in Islip. They are thengrown in cages to market size, about 2 to3 inches. Boyle then takes them to eventswhere he’s hired to shuck them. He workswith Blue Point Brewing Company, amongothers.“I’m a bayman for 15 years,” said Boyle, owner of Tall Mutha Shucka (he’s 6 feet, 7inches). “My job is to grow oysters on thebay, then bring them to events to shuck, soI’m among other oyster farmers creatinga food source. But also oysters are takingnitrogen out of the water; each one filters50 gallons a day. So it gives us stewardship, because we count on the cleanliness of thebay for our livelihood.”The environmental thrust wasn’t a hardsell — all four Rotary presidents grew upon the South Shore.“Bayport Beach is specific to Keep Islip Clean’s program,” explained Draffin, alifelong Bayport resident who helps keepthat beach pristine. “But I’m also a CreekDefender and we clean trash from Homan’s Creek.” Draffin pointed out that Rotary’s Beefsteak Dinner fundraiser is alwaysheld at the Long Island Maritime Museum, which overlooks the bay, and weekly meetings are at Land’s End, another watersidelocale.Incoming Bellport Rotary president Lorraine Kuehn, who attends Bellport Villagemeetings regularly, commented, “We aresupporters of Friends of Bellport Bay. Several of our members grew up on BellportBay, and the village has Ho Hum Beach. Wewere honored to be asked.”Islip’s Rotary president Liz Mayott saidshe had reached out to several clubs whenshe was inducted and was happy whenDraffin contacted her. Mayott has been avolunteer at Seatuck Environmental Association in Islip since it was located at theScully Estate after succeeding a hard-wonfight to operate there with regular environmental programs. She also maintaineda garden for them.A committee will develop a workingname at a meeting in mid-January (“Rotarians for a Better Environment” is oneLeft to right: Rotary Club presidents Bob Draffin (Sayville), Liz Mayott (Islip), Brian McAuliff (Patchogue) and Lorraine Kuehn (incoming Bellport) are teaming up to work on environmental projects this year with club resources.IB/Leuzzisuggestion) and then start contacting theenvironmental organizations on their listto research specifically what’s needed. Organizations targeted so far include Friendsof Fire Island, Citizens Campaign for theEnvironment, Save the Great South Bay,Friends of Bellport Bay, Seatuck Environmental Association, Fire Island NationalSeashore, Peconic Bay Keeper and LongIsland Maritime Museum. The committee’sfindings will then be presented at a March5 group meeting at the Irish Coffee Pub.“Islip and Bay Shore Rotary has helped usout in the past on projects,” said SeatuckEnvironmental Association executive director Enrico Nardone. “We’re excited toexpand our relationship to help with ecological conditions.”McAuliff said the intention is to aid organizations with old-fashioned muscle whenneeded along with funding. “We want tosupport people already doing good workthat aligns with our resources, not createsomething new.” nThis is the first story in theIslip Bulletin’s “Resolution” series, highlightingthose who are creatingadmirable initiatives in2020.”Islip Bulletin Years Ago50 Years AgoJanuary 1970The season’s first heavy snowfall madepost-Yule traveling a risk and put IslipHighway Department’s crews to task under the supervision of Clyde W.
