INTRODUCTIONThank you for purchasing inPhoto ID SLR software!inPhoto ID SLR is designed for full control of Canon SLR (reflex)cameras, automatic ID photography, image transfer to TWAINcompatible ID card management software and image databases, orsave to disk.inPhoto ID SLR can work both as the stand alone application and asTWAIN driver with any program supporting TWAIN protocol (e.g. inCard,Asure ID, Card Five, ID Works, EPISuite, ID Flow, etc.). If theinstallation went all right you will get the corresponding notification. AfterinPhoto ID SLR is installed plug the USB dongle (USB GuadrantStealth) nto the USB port of your computer. The New HardwareInstallation Wizard will start up. Select “Automatic installation” and pressNext.The Wizard will search for New Hardware installed (USB GuadrantStealth dongle). The box notifying that the drivers are not signed byMicrosoft will be invoked next. Select “Continue anyway” to continue thedongle driver installation, and the USD Guadrant Stealth driver will beinstalled.Canon SLR camera installation1234Insert batteries to your Canon camera or connect it to powerusing standard power supple cable.Install your Canon camera on the tripod photo stand.Remove a cap from the camera lens.Connect your Canon SLR camera to PC with the USB cable.Turn the camera on.Camera preparationIn order to be able to use inPhoto ID SLR software to control yourCanon SLR camera from computer connect your camera to PC withUSB cable, switch the camera on, and run inPhoto ID SLR software.The live image shall be displayed in the software window.Attention! Not all Canon SLR cameras provide an ability to have liveimage preview in the software window. Canon SLR cameras having live image preview ability shall beset in “Auto” (P), “Exposition priority” (Tv), “Aperture priorirty”(Av), or “Manual” (M) mode. The live image preview will not bedisplayed in the software window if Canon SLR camera is set in“Full Auto” mode or any of the special modes.Final check6

Povarkova, www.akond.netAfter you perform all above steps please check the following:1234Your Canon SLR camera is installed on the tripod stand.The USB dongle is plugged into the USB port of your PC (if thesoftware was supplied with the USB dongle).inPhoto ID SLR software is installed on PC.Canon SLR camera is turned on and connected with the USB cableto your PC.inPhoto ID SLR start upNow you can run inPhoto ID SLR software as TWAIN source from allTWAIN compatible applications. If you work in Adobe Photoshop go to File / Import / inPhoto IDSLR.If you work in Jasc Paint Shop Pro go to File / Import / TWAIN /Select Source, and select inPhoto ID SLR. After the source isselected use Acquire command (File / Import / TWAIN /Acquire).If you work in other graphic applications supporting TWAINplease refer to the corresponding documentation supplied withyour graphic software.You can also run inPhoto ID SLR as stand alone software (Start – Allprograms – inPhoto ID SLR).After inPhoto ID SLR is started up you will get the live image in theimage preview window.Attention! The live image can be not sharp, dark, with not naturalcolors, etc. In order to get proper image in the preview window and startcapturing photos please read the next Chapter.4. INPHOTO ID SLR OPERATIONinPhoto ID SLR windowThe program window view has two sections: the Image Preview area(on the left) and the Control Panel (on the right) (see Figure 1).7

Povarkova, www.akond.netThe menu in the upper part of the software window provides access toinPhoto ID SLR commands and settings.In the bottom part of the software window information on connectedcamera and battery level is displayed.Figure 1. inPhoto ID SLR window.In the Image preview area you can see live image of the object to becaptured. Live image preview provides an ability to control image qualitybefore capture and change camera settings if necessary. When youchange camera settings you can see live preview changing in Imagepreview area.The Control Panel includes 5 controls: Capture to TWAIN, Capture tofile, Rotate right, Rotate left, and Camera settings. Press Capture toTWAIN to capture image to TWAIN compatible application. PressCapture to file to shoot the photo and save image file to disk. PressRotate right or Rotate left to rotate live image in the Image previewarea.Capture to TWAIN button will be disabled if inPhoto ID SLR is startedas stand alone application. In order to be able to capture photos to8

Povarkova, www.akond.netTWAIN compatible software inPhoto ID SLR shall be run from a TWAINcompatible software.If you press Camera settings button the Camera settings window willopen (see Figure 2). This window provides an ability to control thesettings of Canon SLR camera from the personal computer withinPhoto ID SLR software.Figure 2.When you select all Canon SLR camera settings as you need for yourapplication it is possible to close the Camera settings window bypressing Camera settings button again or by clicking Close button inthe upper right corner of Camera settings window.Live image previewImage preview (see Figure 1) is very important for image quality controland adjustment before capture.The following Canon SLR cameras have an ability of live image previewon camera LCD and in the software window: Canon EOS450D / Canon DIGITAL REBEL XsiCanon EOS1000D / Canon DIGITAL REBEL XS9

Povarkova, www.akond.netCanon EOS 500D / Canon DIGITAL REBEL T1iThe message "Live Preview is not available" will be displayed for thecameras which do not have live image preview ability.inPhoto ID SLR software provides the dynamic image preview. Theimage preview size depends on the camera model.The dynamic preview mode provides an ability to control the imagequality before capture. All changes made to the Canon SLR camerasettings have effect on the previewed image immediately after they areperformed.The rotated image will be displayed in the preview window if thecorresponding controls are selected (Rotate right or Rotate left).The automatic face detections will be performed in the preview windowif the corresponding settings are made on the Processing tab of theOptions dialogue box (see Options).The yellow frame on live image in the preview window automaticallyoutlines the face area. The green frame outlines the image area whichwill be cropped. The green/yellow frame ratio is adjusted by the slidersin the Image Processing window (see Figure 8). If it is necessary tochange the green/yellow frames position and aspect ratio, capture animage (the Show Processing Window option shall be selected on theProcessing tab of the Options window) and make requiredadjustments in the Image Processing window. After that press Backbutton to return to the Image Preview window. If the face is located tooclose to the image frame and the area to be cropped is cut by the imageborder, the frame color will change from green to red.Press Capture to TWAIN button to capture the image and transfer it tothe TWAIN compatible software.Press Capture to TWAIN button to capture the image and transfer it tothe TWAIN compatible software. Capture to TWAIN control will bedisabled if inPhoto ID SLR is started as stand alone application.Press Capture to file button to capture the image and save it in a folderspecified on the Save file tab of the Options window (see Options).10

inPhoto ID SLR: User GuideA.V. Povarkova, www.akond.netImage rotationWorking with inPhoto ID SLR software the user can rotate the image inthe Preview window. The rotated image will be captured either to theTWAIN compatible application (if the software is run as TWAIN driver)or to file (if the software is run as stand alone application). There is anoption of manual image rotation by 90 degrees.The ability of manual image rotation is very useful for differentapplications including the object photography, and jewel photography inparticular. The user can easily select the desired angle for the bestpresentation of the object.In order to rotate the image click Rotate right or Rotate left controls onthe Control panel.Camera settings controlThe full control of your Canon SLR camera settings is performed withthe commands of the Camera settings window (see Figure 3).Figure 3. Camera settings.To zoom the image in or out use camera zoom. It is not possible tocontrol Canon SLR camera zoom with the software.The Camera settings window contains the following fields:11

Usually you can select between:- Automatic (P) when the shutter and aperture are setautomatically by the camera,- Sutter priority when you have an ability to set the shutterspeed manually, and the aperture value will be calculatedautomatically,- Aperture priority when you have an ability to set the aperturemanually, and the shutter speed will be calculatedautomatically,- and Manual (M) mode when you have an ability to set bothshutter speed and aperture manually. Shooting Type. In this fiels it is possible to select the shootingtype: single shoot, several shoots, shooting by timer. Image Format. Select the image format and compression fromthe drop down list. The speed of image transfer to the TWAINcompatible software will depend on the selected image formatand compression.Recommendation: When you capture ID photos the low imageresolution of 640x480 can be used in most cases. ISO Sensitivity. It is recommended to increase the ISO value ifyou capture with the high shutter speed or if you want tominimize the risk of image blurring when the camera is shaken.Recommendation: Select minimum ISO value (typically ISO 100). Metering Mode. AF Mode. Aperture Number. In this field it is possible to set the aperturevalue if you work in Manual or Aperture priority shooting mode. Shutter. In this field it is possible to set the shutter value if youwork in Manual or Shutter priority shooting mode.12

Ability to select the best white balance setting from alist of available options (depending on the Canon camera used).The image colors will be reproduced better if the white balanceis selected in accordance with the lighting conditions. Color temperature. Exposure Comp.Play with the exposure compensation values (varying from -2 to 2) when you capture the dark objects on the bright backgroundto get the maximum image quality.Recommendation: When you capture ID photos the automatic shootingmode can be used in most cases. It is also possible to use the Aperturepriority mode (select the maximum aperture value to get shaperimages).Face crop and image enhancementAfter the image is captured the face area can be cropped.Upon pressing the Capture to TWAIN button in the image previewwindow the Image Processing window will be invoked (see Figure 10).This window can be skipped off if the corresponding settings are madein the inPhoto ID SLR options.This window provides an ability to crop the face area (automatically ormanually), and enhance the resulting image if necessary.13

The usercan change the frame size and position if necessary. If the face on theimage is not recognized automatically the user has an option to outlinethe face area manually.The green frame outlines the image area to be cropped. The yellowframe / green frame ratio and position are adjusted by Zoom, Verticaloffset, and Horizontal offset controls. The aspect ratio control is used toset the resulting image ratio.If the face is located too close to the image frame and the area to becropped is cut by the image border, the frame color will change fromgreen to red. In this case the user has three options: ignore, modify theimage frame, or press Back button and return back to the image previewwindow.The cropped image will be displayed in the right part of the ImageProcessing window.14

Povarkova, www.akond.netThe cropped image can be enhanced if you are not quite satisfied withthe resulting image quality.It is possible to adjust image brightness, contrast, gamma, andsharpness using the corresponding controls in the right part of theImage Processing window.Press OK in order to transfer the cropped and enhanced photo to theTWAIN compatible application from which inPhoto ID software hasbeen started up.Image transfer and saveinPhoto ID SLR software provides an ability to transfer the capturedimages to TWAIN compatible applications for further processing. It isalso possible to automatically save captured images to file.Press Capture to TWAIN button, and the previewed image will becaptured and transferred to the TWAIN compatible software for furtherprocessing and saving.Figure 5. Photo acquired to inCard (ID card software).When the image is captured and transferred the inPhoto ID SLRwindow will either stay open or get closed (if the Close on captureoption is selected on the Genera tab of the Options dialogue box.15

Povarkova, www.akond.netTo reduce the software activation time for the next image capture checkHide to tray instead of close to hide inPhoto ID SLR to tray when it isclosed.The captured image will be displayed in the TWAIN compatible software(e.g. inCard, see Figure 5).When Capture to file option is used the image will be captured andsaved to file on the disk.The user can set up the folder, and the rules for file naming. Thesesettings are made on the Save tab of the Option dialogue box. SeeOptions section for more details.OptionsThe Options dialogue box (File menu) is used to set the options ofinPhoto ID SLR operation.The Options dialogue box contains 4 tabs. On the General tab it ispossible to select the options of inPhoto ID SLR start up and closeprocess (see Figure 6).Figure 6. Options dialogue box, General tab.16

Povarkova, www.akond.netIf Close on capture is checked the inPhoto ID SLR will be closed afterthe image is captured and transferred to the TWAIN compatiblesoftware (or saved to file).Check Hide to tray instead of close to hide inPhoto ID SLR to traywhen it is closed. It reduces tremendously the software activation timefor the next image capture.The Processing tab (see Figure 13) contains controls to set up facedetection and image processing options.Figure 7. Options dialogue box, Processing tab.Check Image Processing to enable image processing after capture.The Show Processing Window group includes the following options: Never: the Image Processing window will not be displayed (willbe skipped off), and the image will be processed according tothe last settings made. If the face has not been foundautomatically the full image will be captured, Always: the Image Processing window is always invoked, Show if necessary: the Image Processing window is displayedwhen necessary, e.g. when the face is not recognized on theimage, when the face is too close to the image frame, etc.17

Povarkova, www.akond.netCheck Auto Face Detection to activate the automatic face recognitionand detection.Check Face Tracking on Preview to enable dynamic face detection inthe preview window.The Save file tab (see Figure 8) is used to define the save to filesettings. It is possible to select the folder to save images to uponpressing Capture to file button and create separate folders for the year/ month / day.Figure 8.
