Tidewater Quilters’ Guild NewsletterJanuary, 2014Volume 37, Issue 7Saturday Chapter Minutes, December 6, 2014Linda Yeager, TQG Sat. Chapter Secretary27 members, 4 guestsThe Saturday Chapter was called to order by Pam Traynham: Dominique Bell spoke about her project serving homeless youths "For Kids VA". which provides anew, colorful pillowcase to children entering the shelter. Set aside some time on March 7, 2015 toassist in this project. There will be two sessions at 10am and again at 12:30 during our Marchmeeting. For information about joining the project or to donate materials, please contact her viaemail at projectpillowcaseforyouth@gmail.com. Ann Walls shared that extra membership cards are available for .50. Elaine Page told of the latest QOV quilt given to an Australian Wing Commander. Pam gave us advance notice that there will be several openings for new committee members inthe Saturday chapter next year. She stated that descriptions of the various positions and theirattendant responsibilities are to be found in the old printed rosters and online. Volunteers for thepositions should contact her; voting will take place in May, and the member will start their duties inJune 2015. Gifts of appreciation for the current members were handed out to those memberspresent. December's program was given by Bev Toole on applying a double-sided binding. Kits wereavailable and she walked us through the assembly. She had several examples of the technique that shehas applied to both quilts and garments. In January the program will be on making your own unique name tag holder.February, Davis Main will show us how to make a disappearing 9-patch star block.March's program will be a community service session with Dominique Bell. Our program concluded with a potluck (many delicious offerings), a pollyana (with many take backs!),and a Show and Tell that never fails to inspire us to keep up our hard work.1) Any help from our Saturday guild members in setting up and taking down the meeting areawould be appreciated. If you could arrive around 9am to help with putting the tables and chairs in place, you would be a godsend. This would allow you to pick your personal sewing space! When you leave, pleasestack your chairs.2) We are still looking for a new meeting place. Requirements are: location in the southern Chesapeake area, available the first Saturday of every month, have a kitchen facility, allow us to exchange money (raffle ticketsand/or membership fees), easily hold 50 members with their machines (multiple electrical plugs--we haveextension cords). Please contact anyone on the executive board.TIDEWATER QUILTERS’ GUILD4

We are indeed touching lives andinfluencing the next generation and the futuremembers of our guild. We made 300 squares and 22 Bears. One of the doctors from CHKD came topersonally pick up the items. She alsoshared that each new mom is given 7 ofthe squares, one for each day. Thespecial care units are able to care for 70 babies at atime. At any given time, 490 of these squares arein use and the hospital can go through a fewthousand in a year. The 300 made in this session.Thank you to all TQG members and friends whohave donated their time and talents to our efforts. We don't often get to see the results of ourdonated time, but this project is already showingresults. Tidewater Quilters’ Guild NewsletterPurple Heart Quilts—Sue TroyanRecently, we received a letter from the mother ofyoung Navy man who was given one of our PurpleHeart quilts as he fought for his life in the ICU atLRMC in Germany last month. He had contracted adeadly strain of malaria while on duty "in Africa".His parents had rushed to his side as he was notexpected to live.As soon as they arrived, a nurse brought in a quiltmade by Mary Lynn Slough and her sister, NancyWines. His dad used it for the next three days andnights at his son's bedside while the incredible staffworked tirelessly to save the young man's life, pulling him back from death's door. From Germany,he was sent to Walter Reed, and then home to themid-west where he continues to recover. His mother wanted us all to know how much theyappreciated the quilt and the work we do to easethe stress and pain of the sick and wounded andtheir families, and to tell us how much they andtheir son treasure the quilt, not just for thememory of the comfort it gave during his crisis, butfor all that it represented -- a tangible symbol ofunconditional love. It is a lovely, thoughtful letter, the kind that is proof that what we do isworthwhile, and also a reminder that the men andwomen who put themselves between us and harm'sway must contend not only with bombs and bullets,January, 2014but deadly diseases as well. We're grateful to andfor them, and for the letter! You may have noticedthe heading and reference to "Purple Heart Quilts".When we started making quilts for our woundedover 12 years ago, that's what we called theproject. Later, when Quilts of Valor Foundation wasformed, we aligned ourselves with CatherineRoberts' mission -- to provide quilts for thewounded of this war so that what happened to theViet-Nam Vets never happens again. SinceCatherine retired, there have been many changesin the way the Foundation operates. Recentchanges now required of participants, whichprimarily have to do with mandatory funding, management of funds, and autonomy, have causedus to reconsider our alignment with theFoundation. We still consider it to be a worthyorganization with an admirable mission, but believewe can continue our work on our own. To that end,we are reverting to our original name. Only thename has changed, not our mission to comfort thewounded of this war and, whenever possible, ourveterans of earlier conflicts. And just to let you know, all those little block kitsyou all have been taking home, making andreturning are already being made into quilts!Seven, so far, and counting! They shortly will beadded to six more waiting to be quilted. Currently,we have six already in the hands of our wonderfullong arm quilters! Not bad, Ladies! We're not yetback up to our old average of 15 quilts a month, but we're on our way! Thank you for your continuedsupport. You are doing your best work!Karen Bastone needs donations of fat quarters, magazines, books andmachine embroidery supplies. And most important of all, members tovolunteer to plan the event. Contact Karen to let her knowwhere you can help. 757-650-4641TIDEWATER QUILTERS’ GUILDVolume 37, Issue 7Spring FlingMay 9, 20158
