Occupational therapy terminologySupporting occupation-centred practiceCOT standard for SNOMED CT subset2. Assessments used by occupational therapistsThe routine use of occupational therapy terminology is one of the essential information buildingblocks that will support the profession to measure, evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness ofinterventions with service users and carers. The College of Occupational Therapists, in collaboration with its members, has developed anumber of occupational therapy subset standards which should be used for all service user carerecords, whether they are stored digitally or on paper.Terms need to meet SNOMED CT requirements and, therefore, may not reflect the nuances oflanguage used by different occupational therapists. As such, whilst listed alphabetically, the PDF‘search’ feature may be useful when checking if a specific assessment has been included. The COT Library and Information Service hold a reference copy of those assessments annotated with anasterisk*.This subset is comprised of assessments commonly used by occupational therapists. Theassessments are presented under broad-based headings for ease of reference. It should be noted, however, that some assessments may be aligned with more than one category.Occupation-focusedDescribes practice where occupation is the primary focus of discussions / interviews withthe person, family or signification others.Arthritis impact measurement scales IArthritis impact measurement scales IIAssessment of Occupational Functioning Modified Interest ChecklistBarriers to employment and coping efficacy scaleBristol activities of daily living scaleCanadian occupational performance measure *Career interest testChild occupational self-assessment version 2.1 *Communication skills questionnaireDisabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand outcome measurement sports performingarts moduleDisabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaireFalls behavioral scale for older people 2016 College of Occupational Therapists106-114 Borough High Street, Southwark, London SE1 1LBwww.cot.org.ukAssessments (October 2016 update)Page 1 of 8

Consequentlythe full term for each assessment scale, includes the term: ‘assessment scale’, e.g. Adolescentand/or adult sensory profile (assessment scale). To improve readability the term ‘(assessmentscale)’ has been omitted from the names of the assessment tools used above.NOTE: SNOMED Occupational therapy subsets also include Assessment scale procedures, andAssessment scale observables.Assessment scale procedures reflect terminology for the use of an assessment scale e.g.‘Assessment using arthritis hand function test’.Assessment scale observables reflect the terminology for scoring of an assessment: e.g. ‘Arthritishand function test score’.Assessment templates: it should be noted that the inclusion of an assessment in SNOMEDClinical Terminology does not mean that the template for recording that assessment will beautomatically available in the electronic care record system. Template availability will bedependent on local commissioning arrangements and licensing agreements.Further informationThis document should be considered in conjunction with the following information and occupationaltherapy subsets: Overview: Occupational therapy language and SNOMED CT Problems in occupational performance recorded by occupational therapists Goals of occupational therapy intervention Interventions recorded by occupational therapists.Subsets and additional information can be found on the College of Occupational Therapists’website at: For further enquiries please contact Mandy Sainty, R&D Manager at: mandy.sainty@cot.co.uk. 2016 College of Occupational Therapists106-114 Borough High Street, Southwark, London SE1 1LBwww.cot.org.ukAssessments (October 2016 update)Page 8 of 8

1When the term occupational therapy practitioner is used in this document, it refers to both occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants (AOTA, 2015b). Occupational therapists are responsible for all aspects of occupational therapy service delivery and are accountable for the safety and effectiveness of the occupational therapy .

Occupational therapists around the world are obligated to promote occupational rights as the actualization of human rights. This obligation requires addressing occupational injustices, initially named as occupational deprivation, occupational imbalance, occupational marginalisation, and occupational alienation (Wilcock & Townsend, 2000 .

Documentation of occupational therapy services is necessary whenever professional services are provided to a client. Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants1 determine the appropriate type of documentation structure and then record the services provided within their scope of practice.
