Some school districts arenow switching over to the CommunityEligibility Provision (CEP), which,according to it’s website, “is a nonpricing meal service option for schoolsand school districts in low-incomeareas. CEP allows the nation’s highestpoverty schools and districts to servebreakfast and lunch at no cost to allenrolled students without collectinghousehold applications.”“Instead,” the website continues,“schools that adopt CEP are reimbursedusing a formula based on the percentageof students categorically eligible for freemeals based on their participation inother specific means-tested programs,such as the Supplemental NutritionAssistance Program (SNAP) andTemporary Assistance for NeedyFamilies (TANF).” Many schools areadopting the CEP program, which meansthat OSO will be using it for schoolsthat adopt it, but will continue to usethe USDA free and reduced price lunchprogram for those that have not. His last day is June 30.Steckley, who came in O’Neill SeaOdyssey in 2005 after a successfulcareer in outdoor environmentaleducation in Florida, brought a highlevel of professionalism and innovationto his work at Sea Odyssey, includingthe 100,000th student campaign whichwas his brainchild. “Adam has left anindelible mark on this organization, andwe owe him a big debt of gratitude,” saidExecutive Director Dan Haifley. Speaking tofurther recognize Jack O’Neill and theO’Neill Sea Odyssey milestone wereBrian Kilpatrick of O’Neill Wetsuits,Bridget O’Neill, Dan Haifley, SenatorBill Monning and AssemblymemberMark Stone.One of the highlights under the tentson the beach was the marine debrisart activity which was coordinated byvolunteers Rachel Kippen, TheresaCoyle, Janice Otis and Shirley Busch.Utilizing O’Neill graphics and logos,event attendees adhered pieces ofplastic pollution collected from beachand river cleanups to create threeunique panels designed to raiseawareness around ocean pollution.Traditional Hawaiian woven mats(created by Rachel from repurposedagricultural drip-tape) were the toolsfor another activity where participantscreated stamp art led by volunteerJim Laske. OSO interns, Sophie Holinand Tobin Zunes-Wolfe, were theartist and photographer respectively,behind the face painting and “photobooth” activities, while LouanneKorver displayed and sold prints ofher beautiful portrait of Jack O’Neill.Just above the water, Santa CruzSand man, Bill Lewis, created hiscelebratory sand sculpture.Te Hau Nui dancers performedfor event attendees on the plaza ina display of grace, color and flare.Following variations of traditional hulaand Tahitian dance, Director LorraineKinnamon invited the public on to thedance floor for their finale.Nearing the end of the celebration,the winning raffle ticket for a 2-hourprivate charter aboard the TeamO’Neill catamaran was drawn.Congratulations to Camille Clark ofSanta Cruz for being the lucky winner!Thank you to everyone who joinedin the celebration!
