THEVOICEAPRIL 2017THE NEWSLETTER OF THE DIOCESE OF PHOENIX CURSILLO MOVEMENTFROM THE MONSIGNORDear Cursillo Friends,When I retired from parish ministry in 2005one of the parishioners at St. Simon and Jude wasasked to say a few words. Thank God she saidnice things about me! One pleased me more thanall the others and I quote, “We know Fr. O’Gradyhas only three homilies and two of them are thesame, and we parishioners became very familiarwith Psalm 103.” I felt very fulfilled. At a Jesuit retreat house in New Orleans a goodJesuit introduced to me to Psalm 103. After ourfirst talk he diagnosed that I needed to hear thosewonderful words:Yahweh is tender and compassionate, slowto become angry and full of constant love Not according to our sins does He deal withus. As high as the sky is above the earth sogreat is His love for us Verses 8 thru 14 repeat those reassuring andloving words that touched my heart in a way thatwas full of Grace. I write these lines not topromote myself but to share with you why I havebeen involved in the Cursillo. Each weekend is anopportunity to share that gift with others. It issuch a privilege.I thank God for all of you. You are awonderful example to me.God Bless, De Colores,Father O’GradyThe VoiceMerciful and graciousis the Lord, slow toanger, abounding inmercy. He will notalways accuse, andnurses no lastinganger; He has notdealt with us as oursins merit, nor requited us as our wrongs deserve. For as the heavens tower over the earth, so Hismercy towers over those who fear Him. As far asthe east is from the west, so far has He removed oursins from us.As a father has compassion on his children, so theLord has compassion on those who fear Him. ForHe knows how we are formed, remembers that weare dust.Page 1(Psalm 103, 8-14)April 2017

FROM OUR LAY DIRECTORDe Colores! It is my prayer that everyone is growing closer to OurLord Jesus Christ and to one another during thiswonderful time of Lent! During this time of the year, wereflect on what really matters in our lives; our faith, family, and the friendships we nurture along the way. InCursillo, we develop friendships by means of groupreunion. Sharing our closest moments to Christ by meansof our piety, study, and apostolic action gives us renewedstrength in living out our Cursillo weekend on our 4th day.I would like to share a closest moment with you that Iexperienced during my adoration hour at St. Anne's. Itwas not an “aha!” moment per say, but still important inseeing what developing a friendship with Jesus is to me.As I knelt in prayer for about five minutes, a name of asong came to my mind: "Rhinestone Cowboy." I hadnever thought of this song before but here it was in frontof me. "What does this mean, Lord?" Some quiet ensued, and then a thought came to me. "Why are candidates at aCursillo like Rhinestone Cowboys? Because they getcards and letters from people they don't even know!" Weboth laughed as if no one was there. and no one wasthere! Yes, I have come to know that Our Lord definitelyhas a sense of humor!Friendship is at the center of the charism of theCursillo. My wife and I recently attended the RegionalCursillo Encounter at Farmington, New Mexico.Friendship was one of the themes of the encounter. Iwould like to share some key points that stood out to me.One talk was presented by Liz Gallegos, regionalrepresentative of Santa Fe, New Mexico. She spoke aboutwhat true friendship means. She recounted to us a time shemet an old friend of hers, and asked her how anacquaintance they knew was doing. Her friend replied,"Oh, she is no longer involved in the Cursillo movement."Liz responded, "I did not ask you if she was involved inthe movement, I only wondered how she was doing."YourVoice! The VoiceSometimes our friendships only go as far as how much wehave in common with each other. We must continue to betheir friend whether they are involved or uninvolved.Another meditation on friendship was given by Fr. FrankChacon, pastor of St. Mary's in Farmington, New Mexico. You may know Fr. Chacon from the apologetics books hewrote with Jim Burnham. Fr. Chacon emphasized that weshould celebrate the diversity within our members, and notto dwell on what separates us through division. He spokeof the great brokenness that is prevalent in families, andthat these broken candidates want to see the love and unitywithin the Cursillo leaders. They want to see that this isreal - that it is possible to love and to be loved! Fr. Chaconsaid we need to be unifiers, peacemakers within theMovement. We need to give this unity to the candidates, and in turn tell them to go back to their families and beunifiers. This unity can only come through Christ. Hewent on to say that the only way to achieve this unity is tohave unity within ourselves; not a phony unity that allowsus to mouth the words that sound good but are far fromour hearts. He said the candidates can tell if we areauthentic in what we speak by our actions with oneanother. A quote from Fr. Chacon: "I see people stunted intheir spiritual growth for 20 to 30 years because of anobstacle in their hearts; that of unforgiveness. They do notallow the Holy Spirit to heal them. They instead wish tocling to their hurts."This meditation helps me to pause and reflect on what Iam holding onto within my heart that I need to let go ofand allow the Holy Spirit to heal me. What can I do to bea peacemaker, and a unifier?ULTREYA!Your friend in Christ,Ruben TrevizoLay DirectorA call for articles for the Voice: Would you like to shar e your witness with the community? How are you living your 4th day? ULTREYA!As explained dur ing the Thur sdaynight retreat phase of the Cursilloweekend, “Ultreya” was the rally cryused to motivate the thousands ofyoung men on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela(the Shrine of St. James the Apostle) in 1948. “Ultreya”encouraged the pilgrims “onward”.What Does Ultreya Mean Today? Some see Ultreya as an essential component ofperseverance in the 4th day. Others see Ultreya as a wayto reconnect with the Cursillo community. Still otherssee Ultreya as a way to experience Cursillo before livingthe three-day weekend.Ultreya is all this, yet it is so much more.It is the gathering place where different Cursillogroup reunions share their commitments, growth, and apostolic work.It serves as a source of spiritual nourishment andstrength for our journeys. It keeps Cursillistas focused on the tripod of piety, study, and action. It incorporates new Cursillistas into the 4th daycommunity. The Essentials of UltreyaLike anything associated with Cursillo, Ultreya startswith prayer, because without Christ we can do nothing.Next comes the “floating group reunion” – floatingbecause the members of the group reunion will changeat each Ultreya. Following group reunion, a member ofthe community gives a brief sharing of their personalexperience in the form of a “witness talk”. The witnessis followed by the “echo” – two or three briefcommentaries from the community that support thewitness that was shared. To put thewitness talk and the echoes inperspective with the Gospel, a“Spiritual Advisor’s Summary” isoffered by a priest, deacon, or vowed religious. TheUltreya ends with a closing prayer and a visit to theBlessed Sacrament, if possible. An Invitation to UltreyaWho is invited? People who are discerning whetherCursillo will be a part of their journey, those who areexperiencing their 4th day, and those who are far-awayfrom their faith and looking for fellowship. All are welcome.Where are these Ultreyas? The Postcursillo Committee is working with parish repsto coordinate, schedule and conduct multi-parishUltreyas throughout the diocese. Our goal is to haveUltreyas several times a month, on various days of theweek and at various times so that all Cursillistas have anopportunity to participate. Most Ultreyas are 90 minuteslong; a small investment of time that can bring pricelessbenefits. If you are a parish rep, you should have alreadyreceived an email from the committee. If you haven’theard from us, please email us atpostcursillo@phoenixcursillo.com so we can update ourcontact list. We are looking forward to working withparish reps and the community, and we look forward toseeing you soon.Ultreya!Brenda Hope, Postcursillo Chairpostcursillo@phoenixcursillo.comUPCOMING ULTREYASThe VoiceSaturday, April 22, 2017Friday, May 19, 2017St. JeromeSt. Thomas Aquinas10815 N 35th Ave, Phoenix13720 W Thomas Rd, Avondale9:00 AM Potluck6:00 PM Potluck9:30—11:00 AM UltreyaUltreya followsPage 6April 2017
