OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio SocietyNovember 2019Volume 59, Issue 11The Official Newsletter of the OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio SocietyARRL Sweepstakes'The ARRL’s annual November Sweepstakes is the oldest domestic contest, beginning in 1930.Sweepstakes paused during World War II but came back stronger than ever. It’s a competition between North American stations – individuals, teams, and clubs. For many US and Canadian hams, it is their first contest operation and remains a regular event on their yearlyschedule for a lifetime. The contest is somewhat unique in that each station may only be contacted once and the number of different recognized locations (“multipliers”) is limited to theARRL and RAC sections. Working all of the sections is called a “Clean Sweep” and allows thestation to claim one of the coveted Clean Sweep coffee mugs – there are other awards, aswell.' (From ARRL Website)Once again, we will be hosting this club event at my QTH starting on Saturday the 16th untilwe hopefully grab the Sweep on Sunday. Although we have a full slate of operators, anyonewho would like to come over and see whatSweeps is all about, please stop by! It's all aboutgreat contesting, camaraderie and just plaindarn fun!!! If interested please contact me andwe will get you on the radio. Thanks! 73Eric, N8YC

Enjoys contests such as Field Day,ARRL 10 and 160M contests, aswell as various international DXcontests. Attends OH-KY-IN’s Hamfest,Dayton Hamvention, Milford,Georgetown, Findlay, andIndianapolis hamfests. VERY active in Amateur Radiomessage handling for the National Traffic System.NC8V’s “Ham Radio History”Ted states he was always fascinated with electricity as a child, and enjoyed playing with modeltrains. His uncle sent his family an oldHallicrafter Sky Buddyshortwave receiver. It was inneed of some TLC, and Tedbegan the task of “restoring/destroying” what he could. Hespun the pointer around, which then ended up not beingin line with the tuning capacitor. This obviously wasn’t onpurpose - he did what ANYyoung boy would have done!He then tells of an eveningwhen he heard an SOS distresscall, but wasn’t able to identifya known frequency due in partto the receiver issue. Thehelpless feeling from this catapulted his fascination withradio ever since. In high school, Ted worked atWIAN, a 10KW public schoolIn college, Ted studiedBroadcast Production/Direction at Indiana University. While at IU, he worked forWFIU, an NPR affiliate, and volunteered at WIUS,a student-run campus“carrier-current” AM station. A carrier-current AMstation used a modifiedham transmitter, and it’soutput was inductivelycoupled to either the ACmain, or the telephonetrunk coming into the dormbuilding. If you wanted tohear the station, you simplyset your transistor set orclock radio next to the telephone or desk lamp!Upon graduation, Ted andhis fiance’ (now XYL),moved to Cincinnati, wherehe found a job as a sales-Current NC8V operatingpositionTed passed the Extra Classexam in 2009, and thenapplied for and was grantedhis current callsign: NC8V.Advice Ted would offer to anyone new to the hobby:Cushcraft A3 Tribandbeam installation.4While money makes it somewhat “easier” to play radio, you truly don’t need to spenda lot on radio equipment.Don’t keep searching for the“perfect” setup to have fun andmake contacts.Get on the air, no matter howa Novice class licensee. SIMULATED EMERGENCY TEST SHOWS ANDERSON IS PREPAREDBy Justin Patrick Moore, KE8COYHamilton County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) members participated in a SimulatedEmergency Test (SET) exercise, Saturday October 5. The purpose of this event was to practice methods ofemergency communications across Anderson Township. The SET is an annual nation-wide exercise sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national organization that supports amateur radio. The Anderson Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was ground zero for county hams during theexercise this year. ARES member Marty Newhall, KE8CEI worked with the Anderson Fire Department toestablish an Amateur Radio Station at the EOC as an auxiliary and backup communications system.Groundwork for this radio station was established by former Fire Department Chief Mark Ober with continued support from current Chief Richard Martin and Assistant Chief Bob Herlinger. Working together thestation they put in place has the capability for city wide communication and could be used to provide a linkto the Regional Operations Center (ROC). Another radio that is part of this set up can be used for long rangecommunications to talk and send messages to the State Operations Center in Columbus (SOC), as was testedand achieved on that Saturday. As a ham radio station the equipment at the EOC has the potential to communicate across North America and even the world. For the exercise this station was staffed by Keary Henkener who is a Fireman for Anderson as wellas being a ham and member of ARES. He serves as the liaison between the two organizations. The radiostation at the EOC was also manned by Marty and Ed Frambes, K8EAF, a retired police officer who puts inmany volunteer hours for ARES.Using portable and mobile equipment the other participants fanned out to a number of different locations throughout Anderson and surrounding areas, from Coney Island to the Little Miami River Park, andmany points in between. The purpose was to exchange messages from their locations in the field back to theoperators at the Anderson EOC and pinpoint locations where radio signals might have trouble gettingthrough. With Anderson’s location being on a hill between the Ohio River and the Little Miami River thereare a lot of dips and valleys, or what radio operators call “holes”. Radio signals can easily fly right over ahole. If an emergency situation takes place and a transmission cannot make it into or out of the hole, it couldmake a serious issue worse. In these situations hams have the habit and skill of using relay stations to get themessage out. Hospitals and nursing home locations were among the many points tested. The annual exercise confirmed that ham radio operators are prepared to provide emergency communications to the Anderson EOC, the SOC, and across the counties, state and even the country during a disaster.5
